  1. I've watched way too much TDF with Phil and Paul always giving the distance in 'old money' - it's actually quite easy when you stick to the round numbers
  2. I did it last year but I wasn't well prepared. It's a double lap race with around 340m of elevation. https://www.vaalrivercitymarathon.com/ https://secure.onreg.com/onreg2/front/step1.php?id=4151
  3. Thanks - I'm gonna work with this (sub 3:30) and tweak it according to where I am currently. My mileage is already at week 9 but since I have 11 weeks to race day, I'll work from week 6.
  4. My qualifier is on 2nd September - Vaal River City Marathon - and I am aiming to do a 3:30, and at worst sub 3:40 to get a C seeding for Comrades.
  5. I look at these times and see that I have some serious training ahead of me, fortunately I have a whole year to be ready to go sub 9. Will it be possible on debut?
  6. WELL DONE EVERYONE, and yes, I'M SHOUTING AT THE TOP OF MY LUNGS - WELL DONE EVERYONE :-)
  7. With a little under 70.5 hours to go, ALL THE BEST to our Comrades participants. I wish I was gonna be there this year so that I can say I have done it but my time will come. Some are experiencing pain and the rest are at 100%. Either way, may the journey be smooth and better than expected regardless of your level. I also won't be watching on TV as I have things to do but I will be thinking of you all, knowing that soon I will also be on that road, possibly wishing that I had never signed up for this madness :-) Make it count, enjoy every bit of the atmosphere and soak it all in. Good Luck fellow Hubbers
  8. I did my 5km TT this morning on a route that has about 100m of elevation. Should I move to a flatter route, or stick to this one? It seems that on a flatter route I would stand a better chance of dropping my PB below 20 minutes(currently 21'19") but would I feel a better sense of achievement by having the bumps as motivation? I probably know the answer but I'm just looking for more views.
  9. At the moment I am 40. For most of my life I have been a fan of stretching all the time and swore by it, that I would enforce it when I coached juniors in volleyball. In March last year I visited a sports scientist who offered lynotherapy to treat my ITB issues. I went to her for 6 sessions and now I do my own thing by just following her instructions. She mentioned one thing in particular to me that still boggles my mind. She said 'if you do as I say regarding your homework and pre race prep, you will never have to stretch again'. To date, I still don't stretch, and as some of you know, I recently ran Oceans and I didn't have a single moment in the race where my ITBs were an issue. Foam rolling is not about rolling the ITBs, it's about rolling the muscles around it, never go directly on the ITBs. Personally, extreme gradients of camber affect my injury but I also look for the flattest possible sections to run on. As I start my 2019 Comrades journey, I will do everything possible to prevent injury and I will build mileage slowly to increase my threshold. I firmly believe that I will never be rid of my ITB issues completely but I know that it doesn't have to bother me regardless of the distance that I choose to run.
  10. I started running again YAY :-) It's been a good 4 week break and now I'm building slowly until the end of June due to having to fast between mid May and mid June. Only 5km per run and then we start the serious stuff towards Comrades 2019.
  11. Someone that I know very well uses Emex before he does the IM swim and has no issues.
  12. No 'scientific explanation', just a suggestion that may help others. Chilli contains vitamins C, so that definitely helps. Use it/don't use it but one thing for sure, I am proof that it works.
  13. I think I have mentioned it before, toasted cheese sandwiches with chilli almost daily as a defence mechanism against cold and flu. I haven't had a sniffle since the beginning of last year. I have also not been running since April 8th but that's only because I chose to take a break(nothing to train towards just yet). I was supposed to start again from yesterday but my ankle has a slight niggle so I'm gonna wait a little longer.
  14. Who is the physio who treated you please?
  15. I don't have little ones but I do have lots of people at work who may be carrying a bug at some point throughout the course of the year. My approach is to have toasted cheese sandwiches, with lots of chilli, almost daily. The worst I have had for this year is a little sniffle but it's gone after a day or two.
  16. I ran 15km(1st after Oceans) yesterday, just for 'fun'. I feel worse now than after OMTOM. Just trying to figure out if it was my start to Comrades 2019. And NO, I'm not looking for ANY encouragement - LOL :-)
  17. Either my ITB issues are not as bad as yours and Jackes, or we ran on different roads. The camber was only an issue for me on the descent of Constantia Nek.
  18. The runs I did last year were mostly 5km, I think I did 3 x 10km and 1 half marathon. It doesn't have to be lighter but keeping it short and running more often makes it easier. As we know, the fitter you are, the better you will recover. I can certainly say that it's true because by yesterday I was fully recovered from OMTOM. Some may say that I probably didn't run hard enough :-) I just checked my schedule - I ran 4 x 5km, 6 x 10km, 1 x 15km, 1 x 17km and HM
  19. I heard that the date for next year is June 9th
  20. I think the policy has changed to accommodate the Muslim community who enjoy running the Comrades. The organisers have moved it outside of the Fast by considering when it would end and I therefore believe that besides the current 2 clashes, it will not happen again in future. Fasting itself will not be affected as we will have to train in the dark(before commencing or after ending our fasts) or be crazy like me and train whilst fasting. Also, the timing for next year seems like it will be the perfect time for tapering.
