  1. Well, this was disappointing due to injury. Another DNF to encourage an early retirement. I had an excellent start, I was going faster than expected but not pushing too hard. The indicator was that the little group I was running in had heavy breathers and I was relaxed at a 4'30" pace. In comparison to last year, my splits were way better, but I was slowing down. My hip flexors were giving me issues and I couldn't swing my legs, and had to resort to a shuffle which wasn't helping much. I then walked a km to the next water station and asked them to alert the sweep vehicle :-( Covered about 29km, a very sad day at the office for me. Inside of my right Achilles is feeling it, quads are shot, lower back is in pain too but no ITB issues.
  2. Shaper - All the best for tomorrow.
  3. Thank you, I really appreciate it.
  4. Thanks I'm gonna challenge myself and go for it.
  5. What's the view on race time predictors? I checked 2 calculators and 1 gave a time of 3:34, the other gave a 3:36. Am I being too optimistic in trying to go sub 3:30? In all honesty, I'll be happy with any of the 3 because it will result in the same seeding.
  6. Growing up I watched Comrades religiously, and like most I had the thought that I should do this one day. Then that dream faded away but not completely because I am determined to do it now, even more than before. I don't really care about the colour(or material) of the medal, so if anyone can finish the distance on the day regardless of the time, they should be given a pat on the back. The problem I have is that we all know what type of training is necessary in order to be physically and mentally prepared for this race, but why go through all the torture during training and then the torture of the day by stretching it out for as long as you possibly can and still finish? I know that with the training I can put in, I should easily do it in sub 10 but I am aiming for sub 9, and if I feel good I'll even push for a sub 8, and then if I'm better than that, then I will try my utmost to go for that silver. All these things are what I think of and it obviously depends on what happens on the day. I'm not interested in back-to-back events, I just wanna go out and give it my all first time around. All of this after never really wanting to run in general. How things have changed for me, finishing a marathon only on my 3rd attempt, now I am aiming for a potential sub 3:30 this coming Sunday after barely 2 years of taking running seriously. I am by no means a natural runner but it took hard work to get to this point. Every person has that natural sense of wanting to improve, so that's what keeps me going.
  7. I haven't given up on sorting my ITB issues out. I know that I am able to run with it provided that I prepare my legs for what it will go through. As far as fearing that it will return during a run, I don't allow it to bother me. I may think about it but I also think positive thoughts and how much further I can go before I need to stop. Fortunately, it's been a while since that has happened.
  8. I did my final prep for next weekend's qualifier. Hopefully I didn't over-exert myself but I feel good and ready to achieve my goal time.
  9. I'm only going for business :-) Qualify for Comrades with at least a sub 3:40 (aiming for sub 3:30) Missing this will be the only disappointment.
  10. Not the most experienced runner but pace increases with time, especially after you have been doing intervals.
  11. so who's all running where and what this weekend? We sneaking down to cathedral peak challenge, should be an enjoyable run... Final prep half marathon before Vaal River City Marathon but at a nice and easy pace.
  12. Just tapering... Event on 2nd September, so I'm actually bored waiting for it.
  13. Less than 4 weeks to my Comrades qualifier and despite having come off a short and mild bout of bronchitis and a recurring ITB niggle, I'm feeling really good. The last week of training is something I was never expecting to do as i managed a little over 118km, over a time of 10h36 at an average 5'22". In my mind, running a sub 3h40 qualifier seems quite possible at the moment. All i need is a minimum drop of 5" per km, and since the atmosphere and fresher legs will assist, I'm really looking forward to it. Maybe I do enjoy running - who knew? ☺
  14. Anyone else using Injinji socks for road running? I have had some great experience in the past as it lived up to it's claim regarding blister prevention most of the time. Then when I got blisters they were mild and I could still run without having to check how bad it was getting. Recently though, I'm getting many more blisters and it's starting to becoming a little irritating. What have you experienced?
  15. I think it's due to needing to 'cram' leading up to my race in September. Feeling forced in a way but it still felt good.
  16. After my run yesterday, it seems like the motivation is back :-)
  17. 26" for me - I think I should run faster but I'm struggling at the moment. It's gonna take a while the way I feel currently, a serious lack of motivation.
  18. I left for work at 5:15. I saw about 8 runners and 4 cyclists. Truly dedicated individuals
  19. Don't worry about it. Even the top boys and girls sometimes miss it, and that's after doing a 90k+ week Just keep going
  20. Seems like people are out training and clocking up high mileage. This thread is extremely quiet.
  21. I'm by no means fast(at least not yet) but I train and 'race' in Nike Free Runs. The pair (I used at OMTOM Ultra this year) that I am going to use for my Comrades qualifier(September) and the Big C next year weighs 255g and is a model I bought in 2010. My training pairs (2016 model) are 240g. I wish I had more of the 2010 model. I would change to another shoe but I wouldn't change to another brand. Too much joy using Nike :-) I weigh max 65kg so I think that helps in the longevity of my shoes, easily over 1000km per pair.
  22. Thanks. Not planning to keep the mileage that high. In all honesty, I saw an opportunity to go top of the leaderboard while the big boys and girls were recovering, and grabbed it with both hands :-)
  23. Thanks but that's ok - I'm also more impressed with that average pace.
