  1. EVERY day is a bit much. I'm sure that most of us here don't even train daily. Not sure which podcast you may be referring to as I don't listen to any. For myself, and I stress FOR MYSELF, my diet is spot on for what I want to do. I've trained myself to get by, and have set my goals on getting the best for myself, on as little as possible. I set my goals for all distances up to a marathon. the only 3 that still need to happen are a sub 40' 10k, sub 90' HM and a sub 3h30m marathon. 1k, 1m, 15k, 25k, 30k have all been achieved. So I'm pretty chuffed about that. Also, all my goals are realistic for my abilities, and maybe I can push them even more if I want to chase more PBs.
  2. So here I am thinking that I would be doing a 1h40m HM as planned. I woke up at around 4am yesterday, having a few sips of water and eating dates before starting my fast. I did my warm up which is adductor and abductor stretches to fire up the glutes, followed by a 300m jog. I got to my starting point and said to myself that I need to crank it up. I did, and ran just under 92 minutes blowing my previous PB out of the water by about 5 minutes. No intention to rave about the time that I posted but more on the mental input as opposed to the dietary input. If you want to, and you have some decent training over the last few months to back it up, you can psych yourself to perform better than usual.
  3. My 2c is as follows. Diet is important but knowing what works best (for you) is more important. I can get by with or without food. I only drink water in my day to day living, and I eat lots of bananas and dates throughout the day. The aim is to prevent the slump. I used to race and train whilst fasting when I still lived in Cpt more than 11 years ago. Since leaving for Jhb, I ventured into running. As I am still currently fasting, I have done a lot more this month than any Ramadhan in previous years. I am 45 currently and getting stronger as the years tick by. I have done a few short runs of 5/10k at any time of the day or night, and then also did 5 x 21k whilst fasting. So not a fasted session but still actively fasting for the rest of the day. I hope to do 1 more 21k tomorrow at a speed that lasts for about 1h40m. No side effects at all. I hope that you find your solution that works best for your training.
  4. I actually wish that I was training for Comrades (last years date would have suited me better). I am racking up mileage as if I have entered events but I'm only running around the hood. It's going well so I will keep going, trying to maintain what I've for the year thus far. Aiming to dip under 20' for the first time in 5k, and hopefully set other PBs as the mileage increases and my fitness improves.
  5. ALWAYS replace, R500 or R5000 is nothing compared to any part of your body, especially your head. Otherwise, use it and don't crash again.
  6. I quit riding my bike outdoors due to the constant attacks from those with ill-intentions. That was 2017 after the attack on a triathlete in the Cradle. I now enjoy riding virtually and I run a lot more. I am 45 now and in much better shape than I expected to be and will still strive to improve even more. Don't ever stop altogether because you'll only be miserable not doing what you love.
  7. This isn't rocket science. Just get on the bike and ride. Sooner or later, you'll be in the slip, or someone will be in your slip. Most live happily ever after. As for our fallen buddies, RIP.
  8. I only buy and sell local, I then meet the other party halfway and avoid all time delays because couriers are unreliable. As always, exercise patience. Never had any issues using this approach. Strangely enough, I wanted to give away a pair of R2000+ Nike running shoes, and the first person I asked, having known that he wanted something of that range, gave me uphill.
  9. I would like to think that there is no longer a problem, CoVid made all issues seem like a non-entity. I really miss the way this thread used to entertain us. I no longer enter events, I just do my training and monitor everyone's progress.
  10. For your 1st line, I couldn't agree more. For your 2nd, maybe but probably not. I run more now, and only spin for a bit of cross-training.
  11. Had a good few laughs reading this thread. Glad that most of you enjoyed the day, and I hope that those who crashed are well on their way to recovery. My last of 12 Argus tours was in 2009, and I'll never do it again but these stories take me back. To the first timers, you will always say "I'm never doing this again", especially if conditions weren't great but you'll need to see if you can improve on your time, or your position or beat your training buddies. SUB 3s are not elusive, even for a weekend warrior. I wanted my 1st within 5 years of the event, didn't get it, but I was successful in my 6th attempt (despite having a bad build up - crashing on Oukaapseweg in a race, having mild concussion, and having to get a new bike 2 weeks before the big day). So...NEVER GIVE UP.
  12. Thanks for your input Philip. I have always been a Nike fan, so that's the brand I always opt for.
  13. Thanks Jewbacca I saw the Pegasus Trail 2 going for R1610 (normally around R2200), so I grabbed it. I think it will do perfectly. I appreciate your input,
  14. Do any of you guys use trail shoes that are suitable for road running, solely on the road and where the odd grass stretch or 'off-road' stretch appears? I wanna know if the sole would last for the same duration as proper road shoes.
  15. My input is useless but I'll still mention it as it probably applies to lots of people. My running isn't towards any goal other than health and fitness. So if I finish my session and I'm still comfy to run the next day, then I have done well. All the numbers are just numbers, I will try to beat my previous times on a repeated route but it doesn't matter if I don't. Around 20 years+ ago, HR training was the in thing but we all mostly just jump on to using new tech because others are using it. Each stat has a place and different things could be important to each of us but going on feel is still the most important to me. I just leave at a certain time, tell my wife to expect me in an estimated time and if I'm a little late, it's because I'm taking strain and walking the rest of the way. She knows the route and can easily pick me up if necessary. Life can be THAT simple :-)
  16. goosebumps and teary eyed. simply AWESOME
  17. What a lovely gesture. Well done to all for making this happen and may all your efforts be greatly rewarded GOD WILLING
  18. I mentioned this a few months back when I moved over to the hydration pack. It houses a 2L bladder and I filled it all the way (mistake) for my first run. Shoulders and calves took the most strain. I then tried it with less water and I got used to it in no time. It no longer feels like I'm carrying the weight.
  19. Minus 1 month as well due to Ramadhan starting next Saturday
  20. If they go for November 15th, it will clash with IronManSA this year. This means that those who usually do both won't be able to. I was only planning on being a spectator at IMSA, so I won't be too unhappy. My only issue is that when I start training again, will I have enough time to get ready? Been chilling for more than 4 weeks now. From a different view, if they chose a date that would be a guarantee for extreme temperatures, how about a night run from 17:30 to 05:30 instead? It will probably be humid but no sun to drain you. They just have to add lighting to their prep.
  21. Falke - about R170 at Sportmans Warehouse. I'm sure that other brands do the same thing but they cost more.
