  1. Parafin and a ?hain cleaner for me!
  2. Better still, talk to Johan Bornman - I was talking ti him last week, and he was showing me how it is done. I believe that he has stripped and rebuilt a number of these (probably the 26" ones, but I'll put money on the 29" ones having the same operation).levett2010-02-26 02:10:47
  3. One way to 'up the gearing' - or at least not have the reduction in gearing - is to fit a custom set of wheels with a 700C rim or a set of 29er wheels (assuming you are on Disc Brakes) You would just need to chack if they fit your frame and fork - mostly they do. This would not work with 'Rim Brakes' obviously! This was my solution - then you have the gearing and wheels for 'off road' and the wheels (with slightly higher gearing) for on road.

That's two ladies, as well as a pair in that picture (look at the watch, not the other attraction)
  5. I'll have to check - maybe it's the Rock Shox one I need
  6. Replacement Fox Fork Lockout Levers I've just been with JB this morning and he was saying that there was a thread here on The Hub some time ago where someone was molding/casting replacement lockout levers in resin. I've done a search, but couldn't find anything - this is exazctly what I'm looking for. Anyone have any leads?
  7. Your right - I'm rather unfit, and more of a MTB'er than a Roadie, but, even more so, I have a lot of weight to drag up hills (currently 115kg ) This was more of a 'thought process' than anything else - I currently have a 'triple' on my roadbike and didn't want to go less than the 52T big blade (52 - 11 is good on the flats) when the going gets steep, I use the small 30T front blade but, really I use the one gear on the lowest chainring and then, when the going gets less steep, I go straight back to the middle ring without working my way through the cassette on the smaller blade. As you say - best stick with the triple until I loose around 30kg
  8. From what I can see, compact cranksets seem to come in 34/50 i.e. 34T small blade and 50T big blade. Is it possible to swap the big blade for a 52T or 53T or, looking at it the other way round,it it possible to swap the small blade on a 'normal' crankset' for a 34T (usually its 39T or 42T I think). So, having a crankset with 52T/34T, would the 'gap' (difference in diameter) be too big for the front derailleur to handle? I suspect also that you would need a 'GS' rear derailleur (depending on the 'ratio' of the the cassette.
  9. Hi Martin, I have to say that I was 'dissapointed' to have to stop at the junction (no abuse from me though) - but it was the only one I had to stop at. By the time I got there, you were obviously stressed - to the organisers, perhaps an 'advance marshal warning cyclists that they had to stop might of helped - I got there when the light was red, but was expecting to go when it turned green, but waited for 2 cycles before we were allowed to go. Slight Hijack - do you have any contacts for the organisers? We're trying to locate this guy - https://www.bikehub.co.za/forum_posts.asp?TID=76006 Cheers, Dave.
  10. If he finished at 10:57, and he started in GL (which I think he did), that would give him around a 4:10 finishing time, so should be possible for RaceTec to find (if he was getting a chip, he'll also have no previous results.
  11. If anyone knows how to get in touch with him I'm sure that, between us, we must be able to get him some kit which is much better (mine will fall off him though - he'll need to put on about 50kg before mine will fit him)
  12. Did anyone see the guy cycling on the bike which must have been at least 25 years old - he has shorts that he'd sewn a makeshift Chamois on the outside and he'd sewn couldoured panels on on ordinary tee shirt to make it look more like a cycling shirt. He had one of the thickest, wooliest, hats I've ever seen under his (ill-fitting) cycling helmet (his head must have been boiling) , and was cycling in (very) old takkies. Someone had obviously donated a bike to him and, presumably, the entry. does anyone know who he is? He was going quite well (doing the long course) and deserves a pair of cycling shorts and (even if it's second hand) a cycling shirt - if he's going to wear takkies, he might also find it earier with flat (rather than clipless) pedals
  13. 105.3 km on my Garmin Just a couple of small complaints from me (apart from the potholes) 1) The big dual carriageway intersection a few km's from the end (100'ish)where we got stopped, and they seemed to let every possible permutation of traffic go for ages before they let us go - I'm not sure if it was because we were near the back (the rest of the Marshalling was very good though). 2) Was the distance - only 8k or 9k or so longer than advertised, but I was looking forward to finishing, and the last few km seemed to go on for ever! Overall, a good race and well Marshalled.
  14. Good luck Michelle So I guess 'L' stands for Long and 'M' stands for Medium (hi-tech this!) - I suppose, therefore, that you're at the front of the 50km and, indeed, G is the end (or almost) of the 'Long Course'
  15. I wonder if they do 'use a lower grade of carbon and resins' - if they are making frames for other 'brand names', I'm sure that the difference in cost of the carbon and resins would not make it wortwhile, and they probably just use the same raw materials - possibly the 'layup' is less sophisticated and not optimised (possibly giving the same strength and stiffness, but with a slight weight penalty - they seem to way around the 1,100g mark as opposed to the 800 - 900g mark)
  16. The problem seems to be (according to the Chinese seller) that SAPO will not accept frames (road bike) as Air Freight as, apparently, the box is too big - therefore they have to 'come surface - which takes 3 months (or it will be around that when, hopefully, I get mine)!
  17. Apricot Jam was selling them - the comments seem to be good Pain to order and get delivered though - I ordered one from Ebay in November, and it is still 'in transit' - it has arrived in Durban though!
  18. So the conclusion seems to be that I'm in the right group - i.e. GL = Grande Last Right at the back!
  19. Also in GL at 06:49 - very early for me! I guess there are not many (or any) start groups after GL
  20. re others know far more than I do.
  21. A saddle bag (on both MTB and Road) with: - 2 or 3 tubes - Tyre Levers - Puncture Kit - 3 CO2 bombs - Chain splitter (not puncture related obviously) - Chain Quick Link - Multi-Tool Always carry Cell Phone and some, but not much, cash
  22. I'm in EE - 07:52 The benefit of being a foreigner - you pay double, but get an earlier start
