  1. where is the XC track?
  2. Hi all. I been away and only got back late yesterday. Hope everyone ready for Friday. I went out this morning and got a whole bunch of goodies... I still need a coloring-in book and a toy of some type which I'll get tomorrow. @robinh: Meet between 7:45 and 8:00 for a quick round of intro's. Then head out at about 8:30 or around there. I'm borrowing my brothers bakkie (I'm that optimistic!) which we can put them all in. I'll then contact the organisation to collect them from me. They have promised to send pics of where they go to if possible. As for marshaling, I guess that depends on numbers. But quite honestly, I don't think there'll be too much of a need for marshals, we wont be battling cars... at least I hope not! @grebel: soory you can't make it, hope to see you next year boet!
  3. I'm absolutely good with it!

  5. that's really nice color saturation (I think that's the right term) with that Nokia! Was it a bright sunny day, or overcast? Afternoon/morning?
  6. yup, will do as soon as I get a few replies
  7. Morning all Durbanite's. 14 Days to go to the big event, hope you all ready! Just a reminder to everyone to start putting their shoeboxes together, check out their website for how they prefer it all to be laid out. In order to just get an idea of who's attending, I would appreciate it if you would pm me with your details (as in the whole family or just one or two). Thanks all!
  8. I'm actually quite surprised the pictures came out quite so green, it must have had something to do with the color profile he had set since the ones I took were a lot drabber as you can see from below. The last one was great. The Wildebeest had just laid down some scent and was determined to lie in that particular spot but that rhino was having none of it so a face off developed, 900km square odd of ground and they both want to lie in the same spot. ended when the wild dog and her four pups made an appearance.
  9. Spent the weekend in Hluhluwe/Imfolozi Game Reserve with a published amateur-photographer. The chap was armed with a Nikon (I think a D3) and a serious set of lenses. These are just some of the pics he took that he sent to me to have a look at.
  10. must be Juliet you talking about? I follow her blog constantly, she's hot, rides fixies and bmx's and once said she would consider posing nude for a bike calendar, I wait patiently
  11. i owned a store for many years and although I initially didn't want the cc facilities, I ended up having to take them simply because the majority use cc to purchase goods. The rate from the bank was initially 6%, but after a few years came down to 4%. when it came to paying, people often asked me for discounts, so I just offered them 5% for cash which was more or less what I would've paid the bank out anyway. i think having the machine was the best thing ever for me, payments guaranteed, no large cash amounts on hand (which always stressed me out!), banking so much easier, machines always updated regularly and/or sorted quickly when not working properly. one thing that always struck me though, is how nonchalant people are with their credit card and details. many cards got left by me, i phone the client to let them know, and they only come in 2 or 3 days later only! or they happily phone in and give me all the details I need over the phone, or scribble them down on a piece of paper and fax it through. lucky for them i only had 2 very trustworthy staff. if i go into a store now and get told i have to pay a "handling" fee, i explain nicely why i'm going to their opposition simple as that - vote with your wallet.
  12. Another Monday morning B.U.M.P.
  13. media blasting an alu frame not a great idea unless you find someone who knows what they doing with regards to alu. as for an acid bath, i was never able to source someone to do it in Durban. In the end i just used elbow grease and paint stripper and went for it. when finally done i took it to for powder coating. some notes on powder coating, tape up the threads! also the color you choose on the swatch may be slightly different on the frame. the finish will come out looking a bit heavy, so if you're in the mood, just lightly sand with 1500g water paper and then buff with polish, it leaves a finish that's stunning!
  14. did csa actually organise and run the event or did they just endorse it?
  15. I'd actually like to find out what the last tour cost, how much of it came from sponsorship and how much from other sources.
  16. monday morning b u m p
  17. Right so it seems that we're all in agreement with charity and route? As a reminder... Charity: The charity is Santa's Shoebox. Please go to the website and read up on what it's about and how to go about packing the boxes and with what. Don't worry about registering just yet, I'm still waiting to hear whether we need to register each individual, or can just register as "the hub" and go from there. Route: Meet at Moses Mabhida at 8am - can park at the stadium or even at the casino since it's nearby. Start the ride at 8:30am, this gives hubbers a chance to say "hi" and mingle. Also need to set up some "hub" marshals to help shepherd every one. Nice slow, easy ride down to uShaka Marine, with a break for coffee there - maybe the Wimpy? Then leave for the point for some posed pics (just cause we can) and then slow easy ride back to the Stadium. I don't think it'll take much more than 2 hours in total so plan for that. As always, comments welcome. I'll be bumping this regularly from now till the 16th so no excuses for not turning up!
  18. i'm all for it
  19. what a load of bullsh*t. I'm at the beachfront almost every weekend and at least once during the week. Last December I took some tourists from the Roma Revolving Restaurant to their hotel on the beachfront and it was a nice enough night that we walked most of the way. There's a constant police presence and the lighting is excellent. this "snowy smith" who wrote this trash is a pr*ck who doesn't supply one reference to back up his claims, not even a photo. what a dick. Durban is still one of the best places to visit and have fun. And New Year's eve friggin' rocks in Durban.
  20. Quick update. Contacted Santa's Shoebox and they obviously quite happy to be the receiving charity. They've also offered up some of their members to assist where possible. I was thinking we should take them up on that to assist with taking in the shoeboxes. They've also sent me some art work which I'll use my extremely limited artistic abilities to turn into some kind of poster and then see if we can't get some company to print up a few to display in bike shops. @Sepie: I would definitely appreciate any help! There is a distant possibility I may be working on the 16th, so need someone who can help the whole way through including on the day. And that goes for anyone else who's willing to help. What's needed right now is a simple poster that features the logo of Santa's Shoebox and the Hub, and of course, "what", "where" and "when". And then if anyone owns a printing company, or has contacts that can have say 10 posters printed up for free that we can distribute? The route I've got in mind is still the beachfront run. It was mentioned to me that the beachfront might be ridiculously busy on the 16th, but if we starting at 8am I think it should still be okay. Any suggestions welcome.
  21. the only money the guys from metro get is overtime, the guys manning the events aren't usually the guys on duty to work that day, the city still has to be patrolled. In the past we also used to get an events allowance, though that came in months after having worked an event and generally didn't amount to much after taxes. The money collected goes to the city if I understand it right, which obviously also goes to metro.
  22. if you're in the area, check out this thread... Hub Charity Ride Durban
  23. Tuesday morning update. There doesn't seem to be any objections from the Durban hubbers on the charity so I'm gonna go ahead and announce the charity of choice.... Santa's Shoebox it is... I'll be contacting the charity today to see how best to arrange getting the box's around. I'll also be posting an invite in the events section of facebook as well as here in due course. As mentioned I'm going to invite the Durban Critical Mass guys as well as the Durban hubbers (since it would be cool to have more than just the 5 of you who responded). Finally I'm hoping to get a poster or two put up in a few bike shops (if possible). which reminds me, what are the rules governing the use of the hub's logo? admin? slowbee? again, any suggestions/help welcome.
  24. sorry to hear this, holding thumbs it's nothing serious!
  25. yep. thinking meet 8am at the stadium, slow enjoyable kid-friendly ride down to the point along the beach front, coffee stop at uShaka and then back. It's flat, about 12km's there and back. maybe hubbers could come 15min early to meet each other. we can't really have marshals on the route, so would be cool if hubbers could act as unofficial marshals and shepherd everyone along the way.
