  1. The big thing is the aspiration. The actions will follow. You're in for 'Reductionuary'?
  2. Edit: I remember my 'bleu' chicken experience at Meat Co. Not cool.
  3. *cough* AWI training *cough*
  4. It's very lekker. Hated it as a kid though. Got served it during Sunday lunches, real old skool Boere style. Within 2 minutes all of your boiled and mashed-to-death veggies were dyed purple.
  5. If you bought BTC in 2011 or thereabouts and hung onto it, you'd still be in a pretty good position. That being said, the market has lost basically the little credibility it had after all of the events leading up to Dec last year and the subsequent implosion.
  6. If you want to track your motility speed, try eating a bowl of beets and then see how long it takes for you to drop a purple deuce.
  7. #cryptomillionaire Cryptocurrencies might still be a part of our future, but it's not so clear anymore. Looks like there might be a situation whereby central banks are going to start issuing digital currencies, not necessarily based on blockchain. Even the head of the IMF has publicly opined on this. Seems the almighty financial system will not play to the tune of some speculative cryptorenegades.
  8. Also try out Cronometer.com if you want to see the calorie breakdown of a meal and so on.
  9. It's good that you're putting the effort in and not setting unrealistic targets. If you're also considering whether there is a health benefit in this test, I'd suggest you be cognizant of what you'll be replacing the calories from the animal foods with. Loading up with super refined grain foods, sugars or doubling down on dairy milk and eggs probably won't have much of a benefit. Try and replace the calories with whole fruits, veggies and grains.
  10. Lots of whole foods, that's great! So, I've punched your meals into Cronometer (I took some liberties with the choice of fruits and veggies, as you weren't that specific, but I think it's okay) Overall, for this specific set of ingredients, you're sitting around 42% of your calories from animal sources. Now, to get to about 90% calories from plant sources (for about the same amount of calories), this is what it'll look like: So, basically it involved swapping the milk and yoghurt for plant-based alternatives, switching from an egg to a chicken salad for lunch and then ditching the animal flesh at dinner for some legumes. Pretty simple. End up with better fiber, iron, folate, and Vit. C intakes, also significantly lower cholesterol and trans-fats. Protein is a bit lower, but it it's in range for someone who isn't hitting the gym/bike that hard. Could easily pushed up with some additional veggies. Edit: very doable for a 'Reductionuary' challenge
  11. Who is willing to send me the details of a normal day's eating, so that I can crunch the numbers to see how to get from there to about 90% plant calories?
  12. That was *** snaaks.
  13. Okay, now back to business. With December almost halfway done, let's look to the new year and see how we can challenge ourselves to step out of our comfort zones. For that, I propose 'Veganuary'. Veganuary is a campaign to have people try out a plant-based diet for the month of Jan. There is an accompanying website that has an absolute wealth of into (recipes, FAQs, etc.) that can be used. It's that simple. Knowing that a full plant-based diet is perhaps a bridge too far for some at this time, I propose a second challenge: 'Reductionuary'. Doesn't quite roll off the tongue, but the idea is to go on an animal product reduction 30 day challenge. Basically, the idea is to get ~90% of your daily calories from plant sources and the rest can be 'spent' on animal products. Cronometer will be needed in this challenge and I can run a simulation to see how that would look like. Even if you have no interest in a plant-based diet, I think it could be interesting just from a cooking perspective - try new dishes, ingredients, etc. Make it a family challenge and involve the whole lot of them. So, who would be interested?
  14. I'd just like to use this post to thank all of the contributors. I think that the discourse has been engaging and that we have been able to challenge each other on various topics. I think that a lot of folks have a better idea about what veganism is and isn't and what the movement is about. So, dankie mense!
  15. Dude, we are growing more than enough crops to feed the entire world. We could stop all meat production right now and still be able to feed the planet. Can you not accept that the current system is not tenable. It’s not about screwing the farmers over, it’s about saving this planet. Edit: you’re so concerned about the people who are suffering from feed insecurity, but are happy that we feed millions of tons of soy and maize to cows, pigs and chicken for single digit calorie conversion returns? https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2018/dec/05/beef-eating-must-fall-drastically-as-world-population-grows-report People in rich nations will have to make big cuts to the amount of beef and lamb they eat if the world is to be able to feed 10 billion people, according to a new report. These cuts and a series of other measures are also needed to prevent catastrophic climate change, it says. More than 50% more food will be needed by 2050, according to the World Resources Institute (WRI) report, but greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture will have to fall by two-thirds at the same time. The extra food will have to be produced without creating new farmland, it says, otherwise the world’s remaining forests face destruction. Meat and dairy production use 83% of farmland and produce 60% of agriculture’s emissions. Increasing the amount of food produced per hectare was the most critical step, the experts said, followed by cutting meat-eating and putting a stop to the wasting of one-third of food produced. “We have to change how we produce and consume food, not just for environmental reasons, but because this is an existential issue for humans,” said Janet Ranganathan, vice-president for science and research at the WRI. Tim Searchinger, of the WRI and Princeton University, said: “If we tried to produce all the food needed in 2050 using today’s production systems, the world would have to convert most of its remaining forest, and agriculture alone would produce almost twice the emissions allowable from all human activities.” The new report, launched at the UN climate summit in Katowice, Poland, follows other major scientific analyses showing that huge reductions in meat-eating are “essential” to avoid dangerous climate change. Another found that avoiding meat and dairy products was the single biggest way to reduce an individual’s environmental impact on the planet, from slowing the annihilation of wildlife to healing dead zones in the oceans.
  16. I agree. Fully. The thing is though that many folks can’t buy Teslas or take their home off the grid. Choosing a veggie burger over a cow flesh burger is just so easy. I just want people to start moving along the spectrum.
  17. *cough* easy fix *cough* plant-based is the future *cough* Is Fisherman’s Friend vegan?
  18. From birth to death, a cow is using so much water. Drinking, feed as well as the water for feed and use on the farm. Cattle farming is a f*cking blight on our planet.
  19. WTAF! ????
  20. Another day, another research article coming to the same conclusion: Reducing food’s environmental impacts through producers and consumers Just look at this So, an open question. To those who still eat animal products, even if you don't want to go 100% plant-based, in light of evidence like the above, what is stopping you from greatly reducing your consumption of animal products?
  21. Oat, soya, almond, cashew, coconut and rice milk and y’all still drink hormone-laden, pus-filled breastmilk of a cow? #breastfeedingmiddleagedmen ????
  22. Ugh! Another triggered plants-rights activist.
  23. #crueltyfreebuttplugs
  24. Sorry. Forgot I still had a carrot up my arse. ????
  25. "At least I’m not farting..."
