  1. I did race backup for Jess last year and it was one of my best days out. I tend to go a bit overboard shouting for runners, though. I may have scared a few elites but I did get a smile and a wink from Devon Yanko so it was worth it.
  2. Ouch. Well, it wouldn't be a PB but could still be a good, final burnout before Comrades I guess.
  3. It'll be post-elections so you may well be saved by load shedding
  4. Do any of you know of a 10km next weekend Saturday (or during the week), road or trail? Not many alternatives to RAC 10km and I'm looking after the kids while my wife runs that. There aren't a helluva lot of options on Runnersguide.
  5. Yeah, Ann has suggested this is her last one so I'd love to see her and Gerda have a proper all-out, leave-it-on-the-road go at each other. Gerda is more talented than I think even she is aware of and Ann is tougher than nails. I think it's going to be damn hard to stop Mthembu this year. Also hoping that Comrades puts a mat up at the 50 mile mark (wink, wink, Jim).
  6. Arm sleeves and a buff have become a win for me. The sleeves keep you warm in the beginning but once you start heating up they seem to stabilise the temperature and act as a good sun guard. The buff will keep your ears or neck warm in the beginning and then you can pull it off and wrap it around your wrist as a sweat band later in the run. And if you want gloves, follow the lead of the pros: Builders Warehouse, R15.
  7. Agreed, I've got Ann and Gerda both ahead of Camille.
  8. If he runs barefoot on a ketogenic diet he'll do a 1:49.
  9. How cool to see Helena Oberholzer in there giving Gerda a rub down. Every time I've had a sports massage from her, I've gone on to set a PB that weekend. She's a miracle worker.
  10. Not at my computer but the best way to do it would be to look for a Strava segment on the route, scroll through the leader board and pick someone who did it in 2017 at roughly the speed you want, then click through to their full run. You can then use the Flyby feature to find a runner who did it in your goal time and had the most consistent run.
  11. Yeah, I get the feeling that when one has had a lot of consistency over a few years, as you have, you probably don't need to smash the mileage as hard anymore? I mean, you're running better with what seems like less effort now, wouldn't you say?
  12. Talking of which, I just saw the Irene results. Janine blew the course away! Was she running it in a group with Vicky?
  13. Thanks, CBlake, I'll pass it on. You kicked off some kind of addiction when you subbed her your Comrades entry. Before that, she didn't even want to run a marathon. She dropped me at 5km and never looked back. Fair to say that Salome, Nandi and Lisa were all using it as a firm effort training run but then so was Jess until the last 10km when she decided she wanted the win. But that was good encouragement for her given that she's a bit shy and in awe of all the other good runners around her. She passed one of the elites at midway, who probably assumed she was an eager new runner (with her backpack and hydration flasks she didn't look the part of a race-snake), and was advised she was probably running a bit quick for her goal and could slow down. It was definitely meant kindly but still worth a chuckle afterwards.
  14. Cheers, Stretch and Lexx. I didn't realise that was an A batch until I saw your comments. I only gave it a bit of a push over the last few km because 3:59 sounded nicer than 4:01. Thanks for the heads up, I don't think I would have known to update our Comrades entries. Couldn't have asked for better weather for an ultra, though. Cool, overcast conditions. The only tricky section was that 5km stretch on the dirt road that had been churned into thick, shoe-sucking mud but it made for a bit of a fun break.
  15. I did that at Arthur Cresswell but kept forgetting to empty it at each water station. I arrived at the finish looking like I was at the end of the third trimester.
  16. There is a litter issue but the bottles at least mitigate it with their size. Plus, if they're of recyclable grade plastic they offer value to pickers. Those two things combined make them easier to clean and provide an incentive to do so, from both formal and informal clean-up crews. Race organisers could get a rebate on the ratio of bottles returned, for example. I don't think the Camelbak option is a solution as it raises the cost barrier to entry for lower-income runners and slows runners down significantly in terms of both running and refilling. It's not an issue on the trail as it's a generally slower activity anyway and they've become the expected norm due to trail logistics and culture. Bring your own bottle is a kind of compromise but it would likely create utter havoc at the refill points, which are already hazardous with people cutting straight across you or breaking into a walk without warning. Imagine trying to get to the water at Comrades with a few thousand runners already standing there refilling their bottles.
  17. Well we're going to have to ditch single use plastics in the near future so races are going to have to come to up with alternative solutions. A plastic bottle seems a better option as its recyclable and can fit enough water to last the runner to the next point, plus they can choose how much of it they want to drink and how much to pour on their heads.
  18. That's just not on. It's patently dangerous, especially as it affects the runners that are out there the longest and are most affected by dehydration and the rising temperatures.
  19. Report back from those of you that did ODD? How did the race go? Was the organisation any better this year? Details, people...
  20. And we've had a number of SA men go sub 2:10 over the last few years.
  21. And please fix this freaking graphic, which looks like it's from SAUK circa 1984
  22. Absolutely gutted. Such a brilliant event.
  23. I don't know, those things look like a Nimbus with a prolapse. Not sure I could wear them under any conditions.
  24. Well now there will be a number of runners struggling with the dilemma over which shoes to buy in that price range. Zero is a number, right?
