  1. Yeah - would love to have it on the list this year too, but need to balance family time with bike time PBP is 1200. Still need to qualify for it though, so gonna be pounding out the road Km for a while yet.
  2. Have it in mind for a future year. This year is TransBaviaans and next year is PBP for me - this one is almost making it onto the wish list for beyond that.
  3. Had an Apt in Champery before I moved over to SA. Used to ski a lot there in winter, and MTB in summer. Both are awesome - you guys will have a blast. Fond memories looking at the pics.
  4. TBH - I get pretty much what I need from the existing offerings. The only part I've missed (and mentioned) to the likes of MapMyRide and others is the SOS type feature. So that could be of interest. There are also Bluetooth panic buttons available that could be used to trigger an alert too - stick one on handlebar or around neck/in pocket. Not sure how easy they are to get here in SA, but have seen them listed in US and UK. Live tracking is an absolute must for the sorts of rides I do - the worst part about live tracking is hit on battery life. So ability to reduce frequency of updates, and possibly only fire up the GPS when doing a position so it's not on all the time. Basically anything to keep the phone juice going.
  5. Yep - just checked. My earlier post was wrong. They took away the map from the front page, but live tracking is still there on the Training tab map. If you see the text window that says "XXX is out cycling" (or whatever sport), that link goes straight to the live map. If it says "was out ..." then it's a static map of the route ridden, run, whatever Also note, it isn't just friends that can see. If you log out, you'll see there are some rides/runs etc being listed. So I suspect if you don't want public visbility of your training you need to got into Profile settings and select friends only for who can view your training and current position Thx to the guys above who made me look back at this! Edit: FWIW - I found Endomondo on "slow update" mode used a lot less phone battery than Strava, and you can still export and upload the rides to Strava. You need the Pro version on the phone to use that - was a one off payment though, not monthly.
  6. Ok, thanks There used to be a "who's out riding" and it showed you their live position as they rode. That was the link which seemed to have gone. The update after a ride to show a map still seemed to work fine, so you could see where I had ridden. Never tried to look at my Training section to see if the map in there is now a live one and shows current positiion - it used to just show the route after the ride, but maybe they added live position to that map. Edit: - just checked. Seems the map on the Training tab has a LIVE indicator on it, so I'm guessing that now shows someones position. So maybe they just dropped the old "who's training" map and it's now all on the same map. Cooll - thanks for pointing this out. Had given up on Endo, but it's good to have a 2nd option for tracking.
  7. Does it show a map or text updates on distance and speed? Used to be a map on their main web page which seems to have gone. I think the text updates are still there though.
  8. Recently, the Endomondo live tracking map seems to have gone - or at least I can't find it. Ended up ditching Endo as a option for live tracking. Maybe they just hid the map!
  9. If you have the bucks - the latest Garmins (510/810) will track you and send the GPS points to your phone to put online. Saves phone battery because the phone is only doing comms, Garmin is doing GPS.
  10. I did quite a search for free apps - there are a few. Most get quite mixed reviiews though, some downright bad reviews almost bordering on malware. The other thing for me is how easy it is for the person at home to pull up the map. I'm a techie and can work with pretty much anything, but it's not much use if my SO at the other end gets something cryptic or difficult to use. What I liked about this one is when I hit Start on a route it sends her an email with a URL in it that takes her straight to the map. The Map even shows photos I take on way (ok, not a big deal really but nice), but what is handy is it shows my battery level - so she knows if I drop off that it was low battery. Another nice thing was you can set the update frequency low for long rides. Not really sure how effective this is yet, but it seemed to survive a decent time at least as long as Endo used to and possibly longer You get what you pay for I guess. If you find a good free one drop me a message. Always on the look out
  11. See above - trying out LocaToWeb for this at present. Only been using for a week, but seems ok so far
  12. What they said - Strava ... Used Endomondo for a while when doing long day rides - my SO could keep track on where I was. But now they've ditched Live Tracking, it's gone from my phone. Trying out something called LocaToWeb when I need live tracking. Chows battery nicely, but all live trackers do - no worse than most. Used about 75% of my battery on an 8 hr ride last Saturday, so phone was not dead at end which was a bonus. Usually expect it to die in the latter stages.
  13. Yep - that's now a different problem. The thousands of people who can't afford one even if they wanted too
  14. Maybe there is some logic that wearing a helmet promotes risk taking and therefore crashes - who knows. But even if helmets were optional, I'd still wear one until someone can show me a report that says they either offer no protection, or cause head damage. Until then, I don't want the last thought I will ever think to be as I am flying over the handlebars wishing I hadn't relied on other people's stats projects to determine whether I live or die. Even if there's a small chance a helmet may avert that disaster, I'll wear one.
  15. As others have noted - in my case ZERO. The spikes were ok, but the energy dips were like falling off a cliff. Am off all gels and energy drinks at present. Plain water one bottle, electrolytes the other. Solid food in my back pocket for energy - which has to be eaten well before needed as it takes longer to kick in. But we're all different - what works for you is very individual, and takes time to figure out which is all part of the fun. If you're really racing at the front, you maybe need more boost than those of us who ride for the fun, I can imagine then that a nice energy and caffeine blast is perfect
  16. Moved to 2014 thread
  17. Did you get any kind of follow-up email after the payment - wasn't sure whether to expect one. Got the entry confirmation and all paid, so I assume we're all good and our team is in.
  18. That's useful feedback - thanks!
  19. Ugh - and we hadn't even started to look yet! Edit: Rookie mistake on our part I guess. Hope we don't make too many more of those!
  20. Already training for a 600km audax on tar in March - so hopefully the endurance will be building up nicely! Just need to get the MTB/off road legs strong now
  21. I knew our team members, but don't have all their CSA license numbers. It was fine with me entering just the names. I'm assuming there will be some Manage Team page where I can go back and add them later. Note though - I think substitutions have a cost (R100 each I think I saw), so better to get your team lined up and avoid costs. Would also like to know about whether driver is optional - seems with checkpoints and drop boxes, it may be possible to do without if allowed. Be my 1st one (and 1st for all our team) - so time to go looking for tips!
  22. Mine too ... see you there!
  23. Also like the stats and controlled nature of it. If the programme says "250 watts at cadence 90", it's nice to see on screen whether I'm hitting that level
  24. Nice job - well done!
  25. Brilliant - thanks
