  1. If anyone is looking for an "added challenge" next year, I met a guy on LEL who was doing an RRTY (Randonneur Round The Year). You need to do a minimum of a 200km brevet every month of the year for 12 months. Doesn't have to be a calendar year, can start in any month but must be 12 consecutive months. Any brevet can count (qualfiiers, LEL, PBP etc) and even DIY/Perms: http://www.highergrangefarm.fsnet.co.uk/PeakAudax/rrty.htm It's obviously a Audax UK thing - but could be an interesting addition to the SA challenges. Who knows, maybe the UK guys who does it would offer to widen his register of completers to global riders.
  2. Well done - and congrats to the folks notching up their 2013 SR.
  3. Haha - rather too many of those are too close to home. One from a conversation literally this evening with my SO: "We could just go to Italy for a holiday, without it having to include a bike ride there". She might as well have said that in Italian, it would have made more sense to me
  4. Sure, had forgotten that one. Seems like G-bay still has a few kids who get kicks from messing with folks riding
  5. Heard a couple of reports of people cycling along that way alone and kids in a car whacking them with some form of piping as they drove past. Hopefully not a trend - don't have any details, but the club guys who mentioned to me seemed pretty certain it had happened twice recently. Take it easy around that area and be careful of riding alone.
  6. As noted above, and elsewhere, an indoor trainer is different and can be better than a spin class. First up, it's your bike and it fits you (hopefully). Trust me, if you pack in a few HI sessions a week, a poor fit is soon going to show up in your knees, back etc. The other biggie is time efficiency - in the time it takes me to get to the gym and back, I'm more than half way through a 1 hour sweat fest at home. Last up is intensity - if you have the tools to measure power, you'll probably find you work harder than spinning (a Wattbike is probably also very good on that front though I'd guess). We're all different though I guess - there's a definite social element to spinning which is nice
  7. 100%. I'm a social rider, no racer for sure. But regular visits to the torture machine have helped me get stronger and faster, and with that I enjoy the social rides more - less dangling at the back, tongue out sucking in air, more time up front enjoying the ride.
  8. Nice one - good spot!
  9. Showing as around R720 rondelas on both Garmin and Sportsmans: http://www.garminonl...ts/010-10999-00 I'm sure mine was a bit less than that - around R550 I seem to recall. Guess prices went up! Edit: price check Ah - seems shade less on Takealot (never used them myself though): http://www.takealot.com/cellular-gps/garmin-usb-ant-stick,9765876
  10. Yes - ordered it from same place I got my Edge 500, which was Nivo. I looked just now though, they still list some GPS stuff, but not the Edge or the Ant+ stick.
  11. TR and some decent videos is pretty much the only thing that's kept me using the IDT. Without that it'd have been a one hit wonder. Just looked now, and they list the Fluid 2 in the trainers - so they've done some calibration. The on screen power is awesome during videos. Ok, it may not be an absolutely accurate number, but it's consistent relative to your setup so it gives you a measure of progress. Beats that whole RPE method.
  12. I saw the Super Magneto Pro also at a decent price when I was shopping for a trainer. It got pretty good reviews all around. I'm not expert, so couldn't comment whether fluid or magnetic is a better option. I ended up with a Bushido, but TBH 90% of the time I use it with TrainerRoad and Sufferfest - so I could as well have saved the money on the fancier trainer and gone with the Cyclops
  13. Pizaa and Popcorn sales would plummet without some of the threads that spring to life here. I say we need to encourage more trolls, but only ones with entertainment value. Especially as I just cancelled my DSTV
  14. Rode with some ace guys last weekend - couple of them were smokers. Darned handy it was too, gave me a chance to get my breath back. Would never have managed to keep up and finish without their smoke breaks. Health aspects ... well that's all pretty well known. Each to their own I say. Just try asking me to give up coffee and you'll see how an addict reacts
  15. At Southey Vines - built and recently opened by Wannabees
  16. That's the spirit - see you there!
  17. Click "enter" then "hope to be" becomes "will be". Nothing focuses the mind like jumping in ....
  18. Yep - posted on the 2014 events on the new format AudaxSA web site: http://audaxsa.co.za/enter-now/ Entries open. Next 600 won't be until Nov, so want to try and get mine in the bag early if I can.
  19. First one sorted - 600km Audax in Jozy entered, 21st March. Next target - get that Baviaans entry!
  20. I see that the 2014 International BRM calendar is up, including SA events: http://www.audax-club-parisien.com/download/Calendrier_BRM_%28Monde_2014%29_20131206.pdf Very pleased to see the 21 March 600km on there - keen to join you folks on that one as a pre-qualifier for PBP. Also great job on the website refresh. Smart looking and functional
  21. Looks like you can claim some anyhow: http://www.99er.co.za/index.php/2-99er-cycle-tour/61-some-exciting-news
  22. Mine has kept going missing also - you'll find it again. My cure, a sunrise ride on a beautiful day with a couple of good friends. Doesn't matter MTB or Road, when you see our stunning countryside like that you may find your mojo came with you to take a look as well
  23. Sadly not - had work dinner, and MTB is in for service. Will def make it down soon though.
  24. Arrgh ... my nemesis. Many a grazed palm or bleeding knee to show how much improvement is needed.
  25. 600km pre-qualifier for PBP 2015 TransBaviaans Get down to the new Somerset West cycle track with my 5yr old as often as possible for some fun Stay fit and enjoy every ride
