  1. This I agree with. I'm fairly optimistic though that this guy is going to land up with a substantial jail sentence. Even if he only serves a small part of it, it will seriously change his life. One-time hubber, Dave Hanton was killed while running by an idiot also driving on the wrong side of the road (he hit Dave from behind) who also tried to drive off (had his keys taken away) then tried to pretend it was someone else driving the car... that guy, Zingisile Nikelo, now an ex-army corporal, is in jail for culpable homicide. Doesn't help Dave's family. Doesn't help Nikelo's family. Doesn't seem to help a whole bunch of other idiots who seem to think that this kind of thing is just an "accident". That's what we need to work at changing - so people understand BEFORE they kill someone that their actions have consequences for which they are personally responsible. But I get the strong impression the DPP's office, the magistrates and the Department of Transport are beginning to see the need to take a strong line on such completely irresponsible behaviour. I still say we need to work at it from the other end as well: IT IS NOT OK TO DRIVE DRUNK, whether you kill someone or not.
  2. According to what law? The same photos were in The Herald, at least two days in a row, so I don't see why a forum for cyclists, on a thread concerned about cyclists' (and others') safety, where we try to encourage lawful behaviour (that means cycling not only according to traffic laws but sensibly as well) should take down these photos?? leon00, welcome to the hub, but what are you doing here? if you feel victimised, I wouldn't look for any sympathy here especially if you can't be bothered to read this thread and see what it's about.
  3. Would be a good idea to get a whole lot of cyclists (with bikes) at court that day - critical mass ride-in. There's been a lot of interest in this so it could be a chance to make some polite, firm and powerful requests for proper policing, law enforcement, and traffic infrastructure/systems planning (!) that includes pedestrians, runners and cyclists. Bennie D, did this guy have his license suspended in the meanwhile??
  4. Only place where we can start. Like that idea - making a pledge will also make us more aware when others want to drive off over the limit. Because you have to think it through and make your choice before faced with the situation. Then to get involved where needed to prevent tragic consequences. Look after yourself and buddies, when we can. Same goes for using cellphones when driving. Personally, I've been threatened with death by that more than by drunk drivers, so far anyway.
  5. Didn't see that at all???! My comment came out of my own need to see a positive approach. This sh*t of having a problem we try to find solutions to then getting stuck into each other seems to be a Saffa thing but it's getting to me. don't enjoy 'handbags at dawn' so much anymore, given where we all seem to be going. rather take a leaf out of the Table Mtn group's (Kandui & co) approach.
  6. On this one: is it not possible to set up a system where if a guy is killed you could get someone from the DPP's office to attend the scene to make sure correct procedure is followed? Or a lawyer? Someone suggested funds be raised from races and set aside to deal with protecting cyclists rights as road users... Maybe like this? My point is, we have no direct control over how the police handle a crime scene, so how do we go about having someone there who knows what they should do and makes sure it happens?
  7. Good call to split the thread. But I really think best way to honor someone killed like Clem was is to do something to solve the problem. So can we try and keep the thread positive (or should I say optimistic?) and not pull other people's suggestions down? Let's hear and think first before we say it won't work? How do we know it's not worth speaking to someone/ trying an approach til we've done it?
  8. My contributions to this thread (great idea to split) have not been about cyclists only. As I said before, why be reactionary?? You can see the problem a mile away and it affects everyone so look at the big picture: drunk driving. But you can add bad driving, aggression, lawlessness to that too.
  9. Local councillor is one of a few non-ANC. Local council is not much interested in anything other than 3-bags-full ANC party line. BUT I am still going to chase it up this way. I've been threatened by these guys and the chap across the road (apparently) had a gun pulled on him. It has been a little bit quieter since then tho! So it does seem worth confronting them. But it's a trend across town, specially at month-end. A good suggestion. Thing is, drinking in public, even while you're driving and binge-drinking, fights etc. seems to be 'cool'. Becoming a norm that few challenge. So I see where the 'blow up the bottle store' idea comes from...
  10. Problem is it doesn't. I'm seeing more and more stuff like this. Guys driving around drinking and nobody to challenge them to stop. Guys coming home drunk at 6/7/8am, carrying on drinking all morning and going off again later in their cars. Just think how much broken glass (bottles) you have to avoid on your bike. How do you stop them? They're gone by the time you pick up your phone to call the cops (who'll do what??) and no traffic cops ANYWHERE between 5pm Friday and 8am Monday. This is seriously bothering me because I KNOW guys who are doing this and what if they kill/maim someone? I feel I should do more to make it an issue at least with the traffic cops. And when they say they don't have budget (or whatever) to work the hours when we really need them, at least get the local media involved/whatever. Why do we always have to be reactive? It's too late then. I was part of a lot of noise after one of our community died like this but nothing changes because we don't keep focused on what needs to be done: get some POLICING going, at least! Why aren't there road blocks early in the early morning?? Things won't change unless we figure out what's wrong, what needs to change and how we can all get involved. It's really sad that it seems those who know this guy (who in my view is a murderer) say they're not surprised. It means there were points along the way where he should have been stopped - but instead...
  11. I presume there will be a bail appearance tomorrow?? Great idea to have a presence there... even some kind of demonstration?? Chalk some body outlines in the road? This is murder. But protest is just hot air unless it's aimed at something. How about focusing on getting traffic cops off their bums to do drunk driving checks or something? Other thoughts?? Hubber I knew was killed like this while out running a few years ago. Also hit and run. Also just missed his buddy. Guys tried to do something and did put pressure on at the trial... but, in the end, guy's in jail, family without father, and speed humps that were placed on the road where he was killed make it almost impossible to cycle there but do little to stop speeding. People just go off-road round them. And I and my neighbors can do f-all about the guys two doors up who drink and drive most weekends. So we need some ideas about how to change the big story too. I just feel so sad, not being able to change anything. But thanks to all in PE who are following this, getting involved. And strength to family, friends...My thoughts are truly with you. RIP...
  12. Look, you'd best sit hard on them. I've had virtually NO useable data connection since the end of August and now they admit they're working on the towers in my area, which should be done by 4 October. But they're happy to take my money and won't let my unused data roll over to next month. Middle of it all they try to sell me a dongle (pfffflllllt). That's why: signing on more than they can cope with. Try 082 155 (data issues) or 082 27597 (technician?!?) Good luck
  13. It helps: makes water 'bead' so it runs off faster and is a repellant. I've tried Capestorm and First Ascent shells, as well as Paramo and GoreTex. The local ones are light-weight and the First Ascent Magneeto is great but not for persistent or seriously heavy rain. The Paramo breathes well in cold weather and is seriously comfortable and waterproof but the GoreTex was the best at keeping you dry, breathing and withstanding abuse... just a pity it got 'redistributed' in a burglary. If you're looking at GoreTex for cycling, go for 2-ply, it's more flexible but does exactly the same job. I'd look at this, if I had the money... http://m.evanscycles.com/products/gore-bike-wear/path-jacket-ec020024
  14. Tyre pressure?? I'm sure you've measured carefully so why not just go with that? Lots of people note differences between gps and bike computers... so no doubt those ERTRO thingamies are often wrong??
  15. Anyone know what time entries open?
  16. Read this thread: https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/117039-cycling-sa-olympic-squad-announced/
  17. I don't think the critics amongst us are saying any one of the three weren't doing their best. Nor that they don't support the team. The problem lies with selection and the management of cycling in SA, that's what has brought the team's performance into question, as there's good reason to think that Cherise would have played a stronger role in the race, as team member and as a possible contender.
  18. AND (let's hammer it home - some just don't seem to get it) SA's second qualifying rider was left at home. Because why???
  19. Bunch of boxes.

  21. Anybody tried the Galaxia?? They also have a rocker motion that's supposed to make the feel more road-like and better for sprinting...
  22. Had EXACTLY the same thing which I bitched about on another thread... These guys just don't get it. Do they really think we're all that dumb?? (and rich - there's a big difference btwn 1 and 10 grand) They lost me as a customer!!
  23. Do it!! If you do decide to go it alone, know that the worst boss out there is going to be yourself... So make sure you think it through and know how you are going to balance things. And don't do it until you're back in the cycling habit - best way to avoid working all the time is to have your cycling diary planned out (same with family...)
