  1. Me also. Me also. How difficult is it to solve road carnage? No policing, just revenue collection. Tells me how serious gvt is.
  2. Second that, snail mail worked for me 2nd week of December. 4 days from UK to local small town PO. No customs delay. But phone the JHB clearing centre to see if it's roosting at your PO... 011 9616000 is the number I think I used.
  3. No, mine (snail mail) hasn't even landed yet... sitting on international scheduled since last week Thurs. Just a bad time of year methinks? Frustrating, isn't it!
  4. That's a reminder to many... had mine checked three years ago, time to go again!
  5. That's hectic but really glad it wasn't worse... is this cholesterol related? You're going to need those six weeks before you start exercising and when you do, take it very easy at first... good luck with the recovery!
  6. Why not get some kind of simultaneous "slow rolling protest" going in different places (as many as possible) around the country, on the same day, same time, aimed specifically at getting something done about drunk drivers? Could get some running clubs involved too, and bikers as suggested by TNT1. Get the attention of the municipal and traffic authorities, and the media. Doesn't have to be linked to one specific event, but each local protest could pick up on what's happened at home, for instance by remembering specific people (naming the dead, so to speak) or incidents, then link these together. Any thoughts? I'm posting here cos this thread is alive but discussion could be carried over to the solutions thread.
  7. Snort!!
  8. INTERNATIONAL SCHEDULED Status Accepted ... well, almost. I'm sure they'd be faster, and a lot more interesting to watch than a page that keeps saying the same thing. Not sure it's good to have a tracking facility! I'm hoping this gets to me in the next week or two THEN the fun begins, turning 8 to 9-speed MTB, slipping a shiny set of new wheels into me old frame. Been planning this for years, so funny now that I've committed, I can't wait to see what boobs, broken nails, blue thumbs, swearing and general stupidity I'm going to commit in the process! Just two more weeks of hammering on the work I have to finish first, though. Anybody else waiting impatiently for CRC etc. parcels, aka reindeer?
  9. Sorry, but how do you think for a drunk guy? I know what you mean Pieterg, I'm not taking issue with your comment, but I've had enough of this drunk driving b*s. Drunk driving has become culturally acceptable, so far as I can see. Companies like SABMiller are literally making a killing out of people drinking more than is good for them or anyone else. I've stood in the road with a cop and his van at my side, with a guy mount the pavement in front of us cos he was so slaughtered he couldn't drive straight. And I had that conversation with the cop, you know the one, please do something or what happens if this driver has an accident or kills someone, and cop did nothing... We have these guys up the road from us and we can get NOBODY to do anything constructive about them. Last weekend they partied until 5am, drove off to wherever and were back round the neighbourhood at 10am. That's my cycling time and it struck me one of them could easily wipe me out - or someone else. And I'm thinking if one of them did take out a cyclist, I'd feel responsible because I can see it coming... If you can't do anything to catch it before it happens, what do you do? Think for the drunk drivers out there and hide in your house?
  10. Clearly I know something, that I know nothing, about how wheels work!!
  11. OK!! I get it from your reply to DaLoCo, I think!!
  12. DaLoCo, Johan, thank you both. I'm pretty sure the spoke broke, not the nipple. Looked at it thoroughly and it seems the spoke sheered off where it screws into the nipple, but then this is a first for me so I may have been wrong, although the mechanic thought similarly. Must say, I'm tempted to have a go at rebuilding the wheel myself (don't laugh, one has to start somewhere). It's a cheap rim so... Also, on reflection, the spoke tension around the wheel was not even, so this may have had a lot to do with it. Not knowing how to check these little things and then the consequences they may have is why I want to fiddle and learn myself. Might be better to use the money for a rebuild on one of Johan's courses instead!
  13. Following this thread with interest. In a similar situation, just a few steps behind, for now! And I'm a bit out of my depth here and not sure about the 'professional' advice i've had so far, so could those who know tell me what you think here... Couple of months ago a spoke went on my rear wheel, drive side. Road bike, Alex rims, alu nipples. Broke off clean at the nipple. Which is where I understand most flexing happens?? The wheel pulled out of true so much that it would not turn, even with the canti brakes released from the rim. Took wheel to bike shop, having looked over rest of wheel myself without seeing anything obvious, other than that it felt like spoke tension around the wheel was not even. Mechanic replaced broken spoke and told me rest looked good to go. Doesn't sound like it from what Johan says... what should I be looking out for? A new wheel?? I've just spent my limited cash on a new set of MTB wheels so was happy to go with mechanic's opinion. Problem is, I don't think he has a whole lot of experience here. The rim is good, the hub is good. Would it be worth buying spokes and brass nipples myself and getting a rebuild, or just buy a new set of wheels??
  14. Trees, I remember trees!!! (and sometimes horses and dogs) and riding on my "green mamba" where I liked ;-) slipping on sand and pine needles and falling in dongas, and never seeing another cyclist. And a goshawk taking its catch right under my nose.
  15. Think I'm bringing trail shoes AND bike next time I'm in CT...just wish I had the time. Miss Tokai! Must be nearly 20 years since I rolled there. You guys are making me home sick!!
  16. Funny this, the accusation that this thread has no contributions regarding solutions to the problem of drunk drivers killing cyclists. But I for one made a few. Instead, we have "Why drunk drivers killing cyclists is not murder". I don't see how that addresses the question? If there was a serious intention to focus on getting people to see the difference between culpable homicide and murder (which IS important) then why not start a separate thread? And the only "solution" that's been offered is to keep cyclists off the road. What a joke. Seems like malice aforethought lurks here too.
  17. I want to support the local guys, but they make it too difficult. Example: I contacted CWC to find out what v-brake specific wheels they can get me. Was told my query was being referred. Then nothing. Went into my LBS, discussed at length, was told they would talk to supplier. Then nothing. So, yes, I'm working on my own options through CRC. This CRC thing is a no-brainer. I personally hope distributors get squashed because their mark up and requirements for order volumes have made it difficult for LBS to stay in business BEFORE CRC came along. So, now??? I think it makes service attitudes even more important now because that's what I'm prepared to pay for. You don't have it, you won't get my business. I'll learn to do as much as I can for myself.
  18. No. You've got lots of time and you're keen to train. Therefore don't start out by limiting yourself... be realistic, but aim for somewhere above what you think right now you can do. So aim for sub-4 IF you think you can make the time commitments, otherwise use another plan that fits your time available. Train with a heart rate monitor (if you aren't already) and you'll know if you're going hard enough/recovering properly. First Argus is really special. Enjoy!
  19. Sorry the smiley above is a mid-read of what I typed B) B ) would edit but for some reason I can't.
  20. Awful, sad. Totally unnecessary. To me it sounds like a) reckless driving, to hoot and overtake where the driver has little passing space, and B) negligence and culpability in that it was the back wheel that struck the cyclist, which means the back of the bus swung in before the driver had passed. I suggested elsewhere that some kind of fund be set up to pay for professionals to investigate and assist in prosecuting in cases like this. Maybe PPA could help here? If not doing it themselves, then setting up/funding a body to do so. In this instance the driver is employed by a company and the company is responsible for the actions of its staff. The company should face a civil claim. I don't live in Cape Town anymore but i have long-standing memories of the dangerous GA buses. Instead of suggesting that cyclists don't use roads like this one, how about banning these huge buses from them instead? Turn it round: it's not the cyclist here that causes the problem, it's vehicles that are inappropriate for these narrow roads coupled with reckless, negligent and in this case incompetent driving. I would also like to challenge GA to get involved with projects aimed at making the roads safer for all users. You could start by approaching the PPA and CoCT to see how you could get involved. To friends and family of the cyclist killed today, my condolences, but I really feel that is not enough. As a community (cyclists, runners, pedestrians, drivers -we're all one at some time) we need to change this.
  21. Just saw this on Facebook. Our back wall collapsed 1.30am this morning but is really really small cheese compared to everything going on around here! Only way out of Grahamstown is Bedford/Cradock and that means Cradock is only link between PE/EL/Durban as coastal road (R72) is closed.
  22. No fine!! I re-read that part of the thread (slowly this time) so saw what you were aiming at. Just couldn't get with the Leon Programme...
  23. I agree with the spirit of what you're saying but I'm not so sure about this... Just from family experience, seeing my aunt and uncle struggle to deal with a completely delinquent son. They've probably got it right, but it's very difficult to say what the right thing is to do when you have a son who steals your car before he has his driver's licence - not once, twice. Their situation could have been quite similar to Mr Gouws senior right now... I don't know. Just saying find out first before blame starts to heap up round the family front door.
  24. Me? I'm not on your wavelength if you're referring to my post? (Sometimes wonder if I'm on anyone's wavelength, true)
