  1. Well well well! I see Ashburton has matched the prize money for men and woman. Nice one Ashburton!
  2. You know what the funny thing is: in the ashburton series the 1st place male gets R26k and the woman R20k. So the organisers flip over R6k per event. You want to tell me that the orgainisers cannot find that money elswhere? Hell man, go get First for woman insurance to sponsor the additional R6k per event and put a first for woman sticker in the number boards of all the lady participants. Done. Or do what you need to do but do the right thing at least!
  3. You know, this world is really designed by some, for some. Mtb is still seen largely as a male sport but I cannot think of a reason it should stay that way. When my wife and I started cycling she was scared of being on an mtb. Scared of falling, and scared of other men that make her feel like she does not belong. Luckily I stood by her and kept on encouraging her to stand her ground. And now, she feels 100% comfortable in the sport. I think the sollution to get more woman in the sport starts with men changing their attitiudes towards woman in sport.
  4. Maybe I am a bit dof but if only 25% of entrants are female, is there not a case to be made that there is still a huge amount of untapped market out there? Do you care if the entry fee is paid by a man or a woman? Does a race cater differently for men and woman? (The porta loo's are the same...) Should mtb not be doing more to promote the sport amongst female riders to tap further into the market? Fritz himself admitted there are not enough woman in the pro peloton. I think this can change. Start with a good incentive: money.
  5. Unless the horse is wearing a helmet...
  6. I once had my feelings hurt while cycling and the helmet did not help. At all...
  7. This was fun... The facts are this: .The law (supposedly) says you have to wear a helmet - even though that it is hardly ever enforced. "In October 2004, regulation 207(2) of the National Road Traffic Regulation became effective after being passed three years earlier. The regulation orders the compulsory wearing of a protective helmet that is properly fastened and fitted while riding a bicycle or being carried as a passenger." You cannot do any race without a helmet. You cannot ride any trails where you have to pay, without a helmet. Even if a test comes out to say that helmets do actually nothing in terms of safety, someone will find a new test that will dispute it. And as long as there is risk of death/injury but any chance to prevent it, there will always be helmets. It is human nature to do everything in terms of self preservation isn't it? As a human I am totally conflicted about helmets. I doubt the "science" behind the need for it but when I buy a helmet, I believe that it is better to get an expensive one as opposed to a cheap one. Go figure!
  8. Maybe a little off topic, I dunno yet. In one of the Freakonomics books, the authors conducted a study on the lifes saved with kids seats in cars. They found that a child between 2 and 6 is no more safe in a car seat as what he would be just wearing a seat belt. Now the part that I really find interesting is the question they asked: If children usually sit in the back of cars, why are modern cars not designed to accommodate children safely and thus do away with child seats? Anyway, I wear a helmet not because I believe it will save my life, but because it may not safe my life but it will sure is feck prevent some scars when going full tilt under some low hanging branches. And it gives me a place to safely put my shades should they get dirty. EDIT: Actually it is relevant. People use car seats because they believe the child it safer with it. You wear a helmet for the same reason. It is irrespective whether any of the above actually does safe lives. You only need to believe that it does. #powerbalance
  9. "Look, he is not wearing a helmet. What a chop..." - usually said when the person riding the bike is doing cycling as a sport. But when the person not wearing a helmet commutes to work for a living (and is probably less privileged), no one bats an eye lid or makes any comments about said cyclist. Has wearing helmets become a purely a sport thing? I know what the law says but I am wondering why cyclist that do this for a sport are always singled out in the helmet topic.
  10. How does "nowhere" look? Like this:
  11. Now that is unlucky...
  12. Those top posters and topic starters...get a real job like the rest of us. Thanks.
  13. I was a bit surprised at the low turnout in the marathon.
  14. They comletely spelled my name wrong.
  15. This could be the reason...
  16. Ok so the wheel is fine...I think. Basic check was this: Took the casette off and put the wheel in the wrong way round. The gap between the tyre and the drive side was the same as before, ergo dish of wheel is fine. I need to take pictures of the gaps but what is a normal gap aon a cotic solaris with 2.25 tyres?
  17. To answer all the questions: 1. Solaris - 2013 frame 2. I had the wheel checked for the dish and it was fine. However, the tyre was still on so I shall do it properly with the tyre off. Would really be disappointed if it is the wheel. I'll keep you posted.
  18. I have a Cotic issue at the moment. Recently I noticed that the clearance between the rear tyre and the left chainstay (non drive side) is a lot smaller than the clearance on the right (drive side). Roughly about 4-6mm. The tyre is not rubbing against the frame (except if it gets muddy) and the inside clearance between the dropouts is 135mm on the dot. Dropouts are also in line. I would like to know if this is just on my bike? Anywhere I can take it that can do cold setting maybe? - Frame is out of warranty. Or should I just leave it?
  19. Jis maar kan die ou nie net sy fiets ry soos 'n gewone mens nie?
  20. Let's burn the parks!
  21. We are in also. Too close to home not to go. (I am starting to suspect I am surrounded by hubbers in my neighborhood...)
  22. Jammer edelagbare. Ek het nie besef ek spreek die top ryer in groep D so informeel aan nie.As jy vroeer by die waterpunte aankom sal jy koue water kry. Miskien moet jy meer oefen dat jy nie agter die groep B ladies vashaak nie.
  23. Early on I realised that today will become a ride of sorts. I found that running in the middle of the pack presented a new view: having so much singletrack at the end of race, gives you zero chance to sit up and have a drink especially when the temperature was rising and hydration started becoming an issue. Kudo's to the organisers for starting earlier. I am also not fond off paying R270 to ride at the bikepark. That is a bit of a rip off as basically that is what it felt like: riding at a bike park. Traffic out of the venue was a nightmare basically because of the strange security measures taken. Kudo's for having marshalls to get traffic out of the venue into the main road.
  24. This has to do with "expectations".I paid for an entry expecting it to be as advertised - don't think that is unreasonable?
