  1. Wonder if he's paying royalties to LA and the like. He is essentially the lead actor in the book...
  2. I did this ride last in Oct 2011, almost exactly a year ago. Time to go have some fun again. I'm there! Where exactly is the new venue? Close to the Lemlou grounds?
  3. Just one suggestion; last year the 70 km and 35 km riders started in the same batch. Is it possible to split it this year? also, a medal would be nice...
  4. Missed this one but really want to make it to the next!
  5. He rode the Beast of the East on Saturday morning and was at Loftus the afternoon. If he was there he's the fastest guy on a SS ever!
  6. We did it last year. I was relatively unfit then so we spent more than 5 and a half hours in the saddle. It was a tough one! We went over every single climb Eric could find. I'm there again! No doubt!
  7. It was a good race. It would just be that much better if they can merge the 40km and 65km routes later. Missed the route marker before the river and then got stuck in some congestion. Luckily it wasn't too bad, but still, it would've been avoided if the route hadn't merged by that point. Was still fun and super fast race! First time ever I went under 3 hours for a Marathon. Quite stoked.
  8. Is the 70km still a two lapper?
  9. I rode a friend's 29er HT a couple of weeks ago and it felt significantly faster and much more racy than my 29er DS. I won't ride a stage race on the HT but for the shorter races I'd say it's perfect. I think Berg Bok has got it all figured out... You need both!
  10. This is my favourite race of the series! Can't wait!
  11. This sucks. I ride alone there frequently and always felt safe. Over weekends there usually are a lot of cyclists on those roads. This could be a good thing but could also mean more targets.
  12. Wish I could have seen it! Damn you Supersport! Gillbert! What a champ!
  13. I'm going to go with Voeckler. Just checked the dstv guide and can't find it on the listing. Is it being broadcasted on dstv today?
  14. Gariep dam nature reserve. Lekker 70km. Kept company by the Springbok, Oryx, Eland, Zebra, etc. Good times.
  15. What a race! Brave ride by Phinney. I knew he could TT but I didn't know he was this good. Martin was awesome! He showed what it means to give absolutely everything! Would've liked to see Wiggins there. Would've made for some spectacular racing. Froomey would've probably suffered the same fate as Contador with all the racing in his legs. Little disappointed by Tejay. Not a bad ride by any means, but would've expected to see him up there with Phinney.
  16. So the national champ has not been selected for Worlds... Typical CSA idiotic antics or normal protocol being followed? This from www.cyclesport.co.za: The word ‘vision’ is defined by The New English Usage Dictionary as ‘the ability to anticipate the future and plan accordingly’. Judging by the way in which the national selectors of Cycling South Africa (CSA) go about the selection of teams, this word (vision) apparently does not form part of their vocabulary. If it did, they would have selected the current South African marathon champion, Cherise Stander (Momentum-Toyota), for the team that will be competing at the UCI World Marathon Championship in France next month. It is important that there should be explicit criteria when it comes to the selection of national teams. This helps both the riders and their coaches to understand what is expected of them. But it is a sad day for the future of any sport when its selection process becomes so rigid that the selectors do not want to deviate from it under any circumstances. Stander is the first to admit that she has failed to meet the selection criteria because of her road-cycling commitments. If the selectors bothered at all to listen to what she said minutes after winning the SA marathon title in Wellington, they would have realized that her goals as a professional cyclist are changing. “I am going to compete in mountain-bike marathons more often and scale down on road racing. My overriding goal is to win a medal for South Africa at the 2014 UCI World Marathon Championship in Pietermaritzburg.” Anyone who has any vision would realize that South African cycling could only gain by selecting Stander. No rider can just rock up at a World Championship and expect to win a medal. The selectors’ reasoning that Stander is not experienced enough to compete at international level, brings to mind the familiar argument about what was first, the chicken or the egg. How can Stander hope to gain international experience if the CSA does not support her by giving her opportunities to compete internationally? The selectors conveniently forget that Stander, as a road cyclist, finished third overall at last year’s SA Marathon Championship in KwaZulu-Natal. This accomplishment made her one of the most consistent performers at the SA Marathon Championship since 2011. She has also won a number of smaller mountain-bike races, for example the Grape Escape, during the past 12 months. The selectors seem to have forgotten that Stander’s training partner is her husband, Burry, who is currently one of the world’s best mountain bikers. As the saying goes ‘Watch this space”. With Burry Stander’s support, Cherise will be a major force in SA mountain biking by next year. Taking the above into account, one can only come to the conclusion that the CSA selectors act like programmed robots who select teams without due consideration of the relevant factors. It is the classic shotgun approach. Just select a group of riders and start praying that somewhere somebody will win something. With South Africa being the host of the 2014 World Championship, one would have expected that there would be some strategy in place to ensure that a local rider would win a medal. Without detracting from the abilities of the three riders who will represent South Africa in France, it is debatable whether they will still be good enough to race internationally in two years’ time. Yolandé Speedy is coming to the end of her professional career. She has reached the stage where she can say: “I’ve been there, done it and have the T-shirt to prove it”. The 37-year-old Theresa Ralph is undoubtedly one the gutsiest riders on the South African mountain-biking scene, but she is the mother of two young children and it will require major personal sacrifices from her to stay competitive until 2014. Samantha Sanders is a talented rider but the reality is that she has not yet won a major mountain-bike race, for example one of the MTN events. If Sanders is included in the ‘vision’ that the selectors may have for 2014 World Championship, there should be definite plans in place to ensure that she receives appropriate support to keep on improving. The reality is that it will not happen –at least not while the current CSA selectors are in command.
  17. You now only have half a problem, as you only need one rotor...
  18. I really enjoyed it. BMC let it al hang out but lost it on that last climb. Would've been cool to see Wiggins and the like racing for sky. Decent showing by MTN-qhuebeka as well.
  19. As Keenan said, that was the most memorable day of grand tour racing of the year. That ride showed his strengh, tenacity and resilience. and dont forget the role of Bjarne Riis in this. Contador deserved that win. he has made this the most exciting grand tour I've watched in a very long time.
  20. I swopped bikes last weekend on our ride with a mate riding a 29er HT (i'm on a FS). I loved it! The bike feels racey, fast and super responsive! Granted, i wont do sani on it, but for short races, even marathons that are mainly on dirt roads like the last trailseeker, it is perfect! So, my choice... Definitely both!
  21. Has anyone heard any rumours from eric regarding the route? He usually pulls a cat from the hat with htese types of races.
  22. On Saturday morning I was standing at the start line waiting to join my C batch while batch A was already lined up and ready to go. As the big names joined the riders in the start chute they would join from the front. I thought to myself: "you know you're awesome when you join a batch from the front and no one even raises an eyebrow". Then, from the corner of my eye I spot the SA champ jersey approaching. It's Cherise Stander donning the jersey for the first time after her victory at the gravel travel. To my surprise, she rides past the starting line, goes through all the other riders waiting for their start time and joins batch A right from the back. One word: Respect.
