  1. My uncle flew Spitfires in North Africa with SAAF in the WWII North Africa campaign, then onto Sabres in Korea with the "United Nations" force, their first deployment of that type I believe, There was a heroic episode where he landed on the desert pavement to pick up a comrade who was shot down, and they flew back to base two-up in the cockpit. Ja fook they (Armscor) had a lot of money at one point. The best bursary you could wish for, unfortunately strings attached,as much as I was tempted. Some of the brightest guys in my class went on to work at Armscor subsidiaries like Kentron etc

  3. That must be in the 70's gauging by the lighties hairstyle and pants. Atlas was that side as well, a giant in its day. I got a job there but changed my mind at the last moment.
  4. Ganna is going to be a watched man, this guy is incredible. I think the best (if not better) since Spartacus's heyday. Also looking forward to the Ladies PR, will Brand set it on fire?
  5. Interesting stats, the 2011 peak was when Sven was the dood, and then the jonges came ,,,
  6. The frozen course in Luxembourg, that was rough...
  7. Yes lots of wet disks I think
  8. Yes, not sure what the plan is this year, although his target last year was Olympics mtb, TdF and Olympics might be mutually exclusive this year, although might be possible to do TdF and mtb but not Tdf and road race. Road is perhaps too hilly for him this year but certainly one to watch if let loose in the mtb race. btw In the ladies elite there was a few mtb'ers who did quite well: Anne Tauber (15) and Elisabeth Brandau (9) Eva Lechner (11)
  9. Wout was not happy about his race https://www.cyclingnews.com/news/wout-van-aert-disappointed-to-have-lost-heart-at-cyclo-cross-worlds/ Maybe its lack of sleep ... but that contract he recently got should keep him cheerful. Although peanuts cf to footballers ie 550 mil Euros for Messi https://www.sportbible.com/football/news-reactions-legends-a-full-breakdown-of-lionel-messis-leaked-barcelona-contract-20210131
  10. Amazing to see the kop of the Elite Men's race riding the sand from the ramp to the sea, compared to the other races, and those last sections of sand before going up again. I was cramping just watching.... reminded me of those sandy roads of Lion Man near Bela Bela, I once cramped up badly when hitting sand at fill tits. In fact it was the first and only time I experienced debilitating cramp.
  11. And she has been winning consistently this season, in great style and some really good racing, a real fighter , so yea, well deserved. Sven must be chuffed. The surprise was Annemarie, she just hasn't featured this season for one reason or another, so great to see her comeback, riding strong and going for it, pity about her few foutjies, don't recall seeing "I'm on fire" Brand going down, but just about to rewatch the race. Denise did well, you did see her tiring a bit towards the end and dropping back, but sometimes her initial attacks stick, I am sure she wanted more but the Bronze was also a fitting reward for her good season.
  12. I don't think there is too much mud there - lots of sand and a big bridge and a hippodrome. On that subject I read that Roma has put in a big for Worlds in a few years time at the Circus Maximus - that should be fun!
  13. Tom can handle the mud and sand well, excellent bike handler. Just missing the long legs. Toon hasn't really featured this season but lets see, he had a car accident recently but is okay now. And Isi had a injury recently as well, I don't think he was racing this last weekend though.
  14. It's also the history of the sport, adaptation of road bikes, long before mtb was a thing, I think most would love fatter tyres though. And often there is a road sprint towards the end, that's when drops come in handy.
  15. Yes its been a great cross season despite the challenges, Worlds is going to be really good. Hard to see beyond MvdP and Woutkop for the men's elite, maybe Tom for the podium, but the ladies.... bit more open, i suspect its going to be a bun fight between Brand and Alvarado, although really Brand has been 'on fire' all season, winning the World Cup and leading all the other competitions. She always seems to come through mid race and challenging for the lead, often irrevocably, She is such a strong runner and that might be a factor on the beach, and the best sprinter for the line. Although Betsema practically lives on the beach so she might be the one to watch. She is such a powerhouse on the pedals, high cadence and great skills all around on all terrain, but often goes out too early, some times it does stick though, but she needs to gap Brand and Carmen, she is not going to beat them in a sprint. I hope she brings it home.
  16. Quite possibly it was also under (full?) power, nose down, for whatever reason, that caused that high rate of decent.
  17. No they don't train PPL on spins anymore anywhere as far as I know. but I had the privilege of a good few back in the day. As terrifying as it was, I enjoyed the challenge (and the adrenaline). Thanks for the refresh of info on stalls, its been a while. If I remember correctly, to recover from a spin : Rudder to opposite side of rotation, once rotation stops start pulling back to get out the dive. Live to tell the tale. This is one of the things I used to use FS Sim for, for practicing procedures (one of the first versions that ran on DOS, still on my self here) I am sure they haven't coded it out of the latest versions, Simmers should give it a try. How to initiate a spin? Straight and level flight, cut power, keep pulling back on yoke gently to maintain altitude, the speed will bleed off and the stall will start with a shuddering of the wings, then give the rudder a kick to one side and see what happens. Some aircraft will be more spin resistant that others, so take the old training fav a Cessna 152
  18. Depends what type of spin the aircraft gets into after the stall. A flat spin it will spiral down, wings flat & horizontal, the other type of spin is more full on nose down and faster decent (if memory serves) current pilots here might confer or correct.
  19. Stalled (in bad weather) and fell out the sky? like that AF Airbus?
  20. I'll just chip in here, being around here for a while. Generally I enjoy certain off the topic of cycling conversations, contribute where I can, and its great to have others that know their stuff as well like in the Aviation, Woodworking, and other topics that come up from time to time. They are generally ego-free and not too many 'manne' like on other local forums. I avoid political + other threads here where way too many 'opinions' are being vented, certainly I have my strong beliefs but, like in life, there is not much point in discussing or debating them with others who exist in a different reality. However I will not accept racism or sexism in any form and will put it down when ever I encounter it. Generally nowadaze I am more a cycling fan than a cyclist so always enjoy the opportunity to view others opinions and input and discuss where relevant on whats happening, but like now when its off season, its the off topic threads that I am engaging in. Doesn't seem to be many CX fans which is a pity since there is some great racing happening this time of the year. I'd say my only gripe is that your system should allow edit of a posting for say 5 mins after posting to fix typos before showing up a post as being edited. Always happens to me,
  21. Yes, that's what I was thinking about - an Airbus trait, although the A220 has them linked (Bombardier origins)
  22. Nice workplace! Are those control sticks linked?
