  1. Ja, thanks pornstar, I wasn't really looking for them though, was just helping dragson find.
  2. Ok, straight up - I am a med student, so maybe my view is a bit biased, but nevertheless: I spent the past month with one of the most expensive ophthalmologists in SA. He has ridiculous costs involved in running his practice. The equipment in his rooms alone cost upwards of R6mil. Never mind the other overheads every month. Surgery is very expensive for the patient, BUT most of the costs are paid to the hospital. Granted the doctor makes a good living, but you need to remember that he has taken 16 years of studying and working in absolutely shocking conditions to get where he is. He also works his ass off every single day of his life with unbelievable stress levels. Ok, enough ranting, bottom line is - you should ask for a quote beforehand and I would change medical aids. Just remember - You get EXACTLY what you pay for (in most cases anyway)
  3. Sounds good, I should be able to keep up. I'll let you know when I'm back in PTA.
  4. Ok, sounds good. Any idea of a rough average speed?
  5. Hi Weight Weenie. What kind of pace and distance do you ride?
  6. hmmm...not a bad idea... I think I'll give that a try.
  7. Ja' date=' I realized that a while ago. But try understand that I'm a student with parents who don't pay for any of my cycling. But thanks very much for the advice! [/quote'] Best I can say is go and work in a bike shop on weekends, you'll get decent discount on parts that way... it's how I managed to keep my bike on the road when I was at school. I already have a weekend job, but I'm studying medicine, so my monday morning tests kind of kill my weekends anyway. But I have a decent job for the next 3 weeks - hopefully that will pay for my cassette

  9. I dont think so - if the hanger was bent then it should do the same thing on the stand right? and how would a new chain affect that?
  10. I would if I could - being a student is tough
  11. The new chain does mesh, but slips every couple of pedal strokes. If I use the same gear and don't put a lot of force on the cranks then it seems perfect.
  12. I cant ride with the new chain, the slipping is so frustrating that I turned around 10min into my ride yesterday. And won't w worn cassette damage the new chain? predictor - have you also got a 9 speed drivetrain? slowtwitch - I've been over the bike from top to bottom and can't find anything, but I think I'll go past my LBS today and see if they can find anything. Thanks for all the help guys!
  13. oh how awesome... have absolutely no cash at the moment and 94.7 in a week... oh well, old chain will have to do. I may as well destroy the cassette and chainrings now seeing as I'm going to have to replace them anyway. Thanks for the help JB.
  14. Ok, so I just fitted a new chain today and after spending hours adjusting my shifting, the gears are skipping I have a mtb with a sram pg990 cassette. The old chain was a 10 speed but the new one is 9 speed (as it should be) So my question is - do i need a new cassette? Here is my cassette (skips mainly in smaller gears when riding hard)
  15. My reba is 126mm edit - sorry! forgot to say that that is the circumference.mtb_Josh2009-11-04 02:12:40
  16. The dischem at hillcrest boulevard has got whasp gels (or HAD a week ago) they are just quite well hidden between all the USN stuff! Just have a look at the very bottom of one of the shelves and I think there was even some other stuff in front of the whasp stuff. There was an unopened box of whasp gels though, so there should be some left!
  17. just use shimano shifters with shimano derailers and sram shifters with sram derailers, although the front derailure doesn't matter.
  18. sram shifters wont work, so go for SLX, or XT if the price difference isnt too much. XTR is better than XT, but is a lot more expensive - it would be better to spend that kind of cash upgrading the whole drivetrain instead.
  19. Well the shifters and brakes are separate systems, so it doesn't really matter what shifters you use with juicy 5. I've just switched to grip shifters, done about 300km with them and I love them, but its all up to personal preference.
  20. Eish... ja, thats quite a bit... Where did you get those prices from?
  21. That looks almost like my shopping list (except I already have the X9 ) I'm also interested to see the prices. anyone?
  22. Where exactly is Singletrack? I live in PTA east and need a new LBS.
  23. What's wrong with titanium bolts? Wouldn't they be strong enough? I weigh 69kg and I'm losing more with the amount of training I'm doing lately, so weight limits aren't a problem at the moment
  24. hmm... I think I'll stick with the reba for a while. So my list so far : stem, crank, tyres, seatpost. (and I think I have about 3kg of extra mud on it at the moment ) Now I just need someone to buy my bianchi frame so I can afford these things...
  25. Thanks Racer X. Got it for R9500. Only things that needed sorting out was an oval back rim (got that sorted) and the chain is a bit worn, otherwise its in great condition. Thanks for the advice, I think for now its going to have to stay as it is, but as soon as I get paid for this month's coaching job I think I'm going to have to find some KCNC stuff and maybe some lighter tyres. I actually weighed my el-cheapo pedals against a set of eggbeaters and the weight difference wasn't that huge...
