  1. I have tried reason, rationality and the burden of proof on this thread already. Unfortunately people seem to follow this diet, and the dogma behind it, with a fervency that only the extremely religious could be in envy of. A kind of faith that requires the denial of observation so that belief can be preserved, and Noakes is the most guilty of promoting this kind of pseudoscience. Did you read those papers? The Meta analyses of hundreds of other studies into the effect of low carb diets? It feels baffling to me to see how many people can accept this kind of potentially incredibly harmful advice without requiring hard, sound, and double blind medical advice? And no I don't mean a collection of 127 self reported "case studies".
  2. @JacquesR: “Three major scientific reviews show that low-carbohydrate diets increase the risk of sickness and death” I know this is falling on the deaf ears of the evangelised, but I'm going to post this anyway. http://www.drmcdougall.com/misc/2014nl/jan/smoke.htm?utm_content=buffer1da9b&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer
  3. Homeopathy has either been proved not to work, or not been proved to work. Alternative medicine that has been proved to work is called medicine. Homeopathy claims that a solution becomes more potent as the dilution increases (to the ppm where you are not consuming even a single molecule of active ingredient). This goes against all the laws of physics and our understanding of mammalian physiology. Taking the placebo effect into account the only condition homeopathy could ever be relied upon to treat is dehydration, because the treatment is water. Science adjusts it's views based on what is observed. Faith is the denial of observation, so that belief can be preserved.
  4. Let's pool together 127 anecdotal reports of the wonders of nutritional supplements and maybe we too can get published in SAMA.
  5. I have exactly the same problem on my stumpjumper. Having checked and replaced almost everything (seat clamp, saddle, bb, pivot bearings etc) the creak, more like a horrifying crack, has returned without fail after 10km. Even a light wash seems to make the problem go away temporarily, only to return with a vengeance, which has made isolating the problem difficult. The only solution seems to be heavily (I mean this) greasing the seat post's rails, but a week or two in and the problem resurfaces. I'm running the Thompson elite seat post and Gobi saddle (which I had initially thought to blame but a brand new one didn't solve it).
  6. Even if Tim Noakes' diet is successful the science behind it is non existent at best, and it's absolutely deplorable that he got a series of self reported diet anecdotes published in a medical journal. http://synapses.co.za/lessons-bad-science-tim-noakes-samj/
  7. If you're on iOS7 you need to also turn on background app refresh for strava. Settings>General>Background App refresh.
  8. In my experience the Elixer brakes are much better than the Juicy's, I have two sets of Elixer 9's: prefer the lever feel and modulation over XT's and have 5000+km on both, not even a bleed. The general hub consensus will probably be to avoid avid though.
  9. The shock on a 2010 stumpjumper has a specific eye to eye length that is unlike most stock shocks (most Specialized bikes are like this), but there is a walk around if you don't want to replace it with the same shock: you can get www.pushindustries.com to adjust the shock of your choice to fit that frame.
  10. Trying to sell you a 5 year old bike for the same price as it was sold then is pretty laughable. If I may ask, what is wrong with the Big Nine? Maybe look at just getting a new frame and transferring the old components?
  11. No deal. The XC is at least 5 years old already- and even for its time it was monstrously heavy, no idea what your bike store thinks they're trying to pull, but not worth it at all.
  12. I would happily stand up for anybody I saw being treated badly, but I fail to see how violence was the necessary solution here?
  13. I sincerely hope you get charged with assault. Is it just that you are so thoroughly inarticulate that you could only respond with violence? Pathetic. What's even more pathetic is that you're proud of your actions.
  14. Agree that MTB is much more versatile, and frankly way more fun. I think you're going to struggle to find a bike with wheels (specifically rims) rated to 150KG. You may have to get a set of wheels built up with DH or Freeride rims. Also remember at that weight the frame and fork flex is going to be amplified so go for a relatively stiff frame.
  15. I have exactly the same problem on my Elixer 9's. Doesn't matter if its washed with sunlight, powasol or muc-off. I avoid cleaning the rotors and can only assume its due to run off as it doesn't occur from just water. Switching to organic pads briefly alleviated the problem but they wear so quickly it's not worth it.
  16. Sounds great, do some hill climbing at klapperkop so that's perfect, will PM you guys!
  17. I'm a student, so afternoon and morning rides are both possible. Will PM you my details.
  18. He seems to be much more aggressive/protective towards groups of riders. He wouldn't let any of us pass for at least 20 minutes.
  19. I've seen that adult male giraffe charge someone else off their bike before, and then guard the bike, it's the ostriches that scare me: had two very close calls.
  20. Tired of riding Groenkloof alone, looking for training mates to ride at Groenkloof, or the surroundings area, 5-6 days a week for fairly long (50km) and technical riding: average around 20km/h around the nature reserve. A taste for post ride recovery beer will be a bonus. Roadies need not apply.
  21. I'm looking for riding mates to train at Groenkloof if anyone is interested, getting a bit tired of riding there alone, ride 5-6 times a week. PM me if you're keen.
  22. Straight leg is not ok, I'm comfortable at about a 20 degree angle (when the crank is in line with the seat post- not at the lowest point in its revolution). You will develop knee problems if you don't find a way to drop it. Can't you have the seat post cut to fit lower in the frame?
  23. Stumpjumper Tallboy 2 Both great bikes, and neither brands have the rather worrying number of cracked frames that giant have. Don't bother with the Scott, the suspension performance doesn't compare to the other three.
  24. This isn't true. Taking too many vitamins has been shown to reduce life expectancy and increase risk of certain cancers, multiple peer reviewed double blind medical trials. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/09/opinion/sunday/dont-take-your-vitamins.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0
  25. Also had phenomenal service from Easy Bike, and their delivery times beat the other two (online stores) easily. Would just appreciate a little wider selection (SRAM?).
