  1. Hi Christian, Thanks so much for your response on this thread, just to clarify - this is not at all an attack on Wahoo - it was more just a matter of interest to see how Garmin is able to drop their prices in SA on a similar pricing to the UK. I did notice that the price advertised on the official Garmin site is alot more than what retailers (that also sell Wahoo units) are currently selling them for: Edge 830 @ Sportsmans: R7999.90 Edge 830 @ Cycle Lab: R7999.99 Both these prices are sitting between 8-9% increase. Whereas the Wahoo Units will almost always be sold at the price stipulated on the website (which seems fair if I am being honest). Just wondering how these retailers are able to drop their prices so much with the Garmin Units versus the Wahoo units. Side note, I am a Wahoo fan boy - so I think I am going to go for the Roam anyways - will just wait for borders to open and a mate to come back from the UK, unless there is a special coming around
  2. Yeah higher price but can get the Wahoo for much cheaper in the UK, whereas Garmin price difference between SA and UK is negligable. Having a look at the other Brands at the moment. So many options!
  3. Fully agree, Not disputing the sole price variation between SA and UK as I do understand that they do not trade at the going FX rate, and there are import duties to cater for. My question was more around why the Wahoo computers are retailed at a MUCH higher markup (+/-25%) to it's Garmin counterparts (+/-10%) when comparing UK pricing to SA pricing. ie. the markup discrepancy across brands between respective countries. I think it may be due to the fact that Garmin has more of a presence in SA.
  4. I am in the market for a bike computer, I have been deliberating between the Garmin Edge 530 and the Wahoo Elemnt Roam for quite some time now. This is more of a question on Wahoo South Africa's pricing than opinions between which is better (I am however still open to suggestions!) In South Africa, the Edge 530 (*listed at R6000) is nearly R2000 cheaper than the Element Roam (listed at R7999), fine. When observing UK prices. the Garmin Edge comes in at R5499 (at a R21.15 - GBP exchange rate), making it an 8% price increase in SA to UK. The Element Roam is listed at R6345 in the UK (again, at a R21.15 - GBP exchange rate), making it a 21% more expensive on the SA shelves. The Bolt, listed at R5499 here in SA, is priced at R3912 in the UK (difference of 29%). Long story short, why does Wahoo have higher markup prices when comparing SA to UK than Garmin? Would it be because Garmin has a greater presence in the country and therefore able to turn more stock over? Just found it interesting more than a complaint. *Just wanted to note that prices were taken from official website listings - the Garmin unit however is listed at R6949 on their official website - but have only seen it listed at R6000 on most of the popular sites.
  5. What a load of cr*p, I for the life of me do not understand people saying "It's the new normal", "Everything will be different". Why? When Covid is done and dusted - why will we keep these stupid (but currently necessary) measures in place - this is an event that has shaken the world (understandably so), but like all things - it to will pass. There is absolutely no reason to change event formats when this is all said and done. I for one would love to return to mass participation events such as cycle challenge when there is no looming monster above our heads. Stop this fear mongering, the new normal should not be a thing - it will return to the old normal (for lack of a better phrase), or else we are digging ourselves into a ditch of fear. #poetry
  6. This. Murray at no stage said that he is going for this record or that record or to be quicker than SA pro runners. He simply said he is going for his PB. Each person's PB is tailored to themselves - my personal best on a local climb starts after a stop street whereas someone else's might begin when the gradient goes from 0% to 0.05%. If he wanted to go down in the record books and stated it before he began, then sure - organise the necessary arrangements to be legit. These twitter warriors are just knobs that can't appreciate a man that just wants to better himself. **Side note - if it is in fact seen as a legit SA record - then bonus for Murray! - take it up with the authorities that deemed it legit, don't tune the individuak k*k
  7. Where did you get this info from!? **EDIT - I happened to miss the above - Nevermind!
  8. Been struggling to get up in the am with the potential cancellation/postponment of Comrades. Tempted to just jump back on the bike and enjoy my riding again!
  9. Hey guys, quick question re. Discovery Bank. Since I moved over to Discovery Bank, I have noticed we are no longer getting the Discovery Miles Multiplier (when you spend with partner stores such as BP and Pick 'n Pay). obviously the active rewards and banking rewards have replaced the 'Multiplier' programme. Does this mean that we no longer get more miles granted at the partner stores? Or will we just get more 'Base' miles if we go to BP as an example? Sorry if this is unclear
  10. What a brilliant race! Well organised and a perfect mix of technical terrain and fast single track/jeep track. Some of the jeep track was a bit overgrown which provided a few surprises, but other than that; it was great fun! Will definitely be back next year
  11. The website still says 'Nelson Mandela Bay' for the 2020 edition - however the date is TBD...
  12. My first Ironman experience: I do not think it is possible to overestimate an event quite like the Ironman – this was the biggest lesson I had learnt throughout Sunday, 7 April. Lining up on the start line at Hobie beach, I overheard 2 guys talking about a shortened swim, I must have missed the memo as I thought this was all a sick joke, until I heard Paul Kaye announce a ‘new swim course’. This news was met with disappointment, what do I tell my mates? Does this mean I haven’t officially completed a FULL Ironman? A quick glance at the ocean post announcement, caused frustration and disappointment turn to reason, ‘there must be a valid reason for this’. Enter the swim: nerves fall away, and excitement rolls over, excitement is then replaced with panic after what felt like I was swimming over buildings and dumped back into the ‘flat’ swells of the water. These conditions took some getting used to (approximately 500m) and excitement and focus returned once again. After completing the 2.1kms (NOT 1.6kms) I exited the water in a time of 37:06 thinking to myself that it was probably best that the swim was shortened – but still… have I completed a full Ironman? Onto the bike we go – The first part of the bike was about getting my HR in check after the massive spike T1 always brings, it was a measured approach and I was grateful for the maturity I showed in this part of the race. The dreaded hills that I heard about pre-race were a breeze and only slight ‘ kickers, little did I know that these were not the hills that ‘they’ were talking about … heading to the 40-odd km mark I realised that we had entered hurt locker territory. Hills with gradients and distances that slowly sapped the valuable energy from the legs crept up on me like 4am alarm (it was more of a slap in the face). After surviving the turn around and cycling into a cone – I exited the valley of 1000 hills hoping to get some respite – no such thing happened. I was met with a headwind and stupid hill that never ended; this is apparently known as Heartbreak hill. 2nd lap on the bike I at least knew what I was in for – same story, had an easy peddle up to the valley of 1000 hills (which I am now referring to that section as) and then tried to get as aero as possible, waiting to get to the last easy 15kms into PE. These last 15 ‘easy’ kms were carnage. The wind had picked up and it was a long battle with the bike to get me to the sanity of Marine Drive. Bike leg: 6hr 10min Into transition, where I was prepared to cumulate an additional 10 minutes of a sanity check and a refuel session. Run started off easier than expected, the headwind going university direction took a bit of a knock on my splits, but I was okay – I had already experienced hell, and what it had to offer, on the bike. 15kms into the run and breathing issues ensued – I prepared my girlfriend and family for a late night of spectating on the tv and on the side of the road and proceeded to waddle off to the next water point. It was here where I understood how Chuck (Tom Hanks) felt when he saw a container ship out at sea to rescue him in Castaway. Only, my container ship, was in the form of a quarter of a marmite sandwich and a boiled potato. My energy levels picked up and so I developed a walk the water tables approach and made my way onto the red carpet. Marathon time: 3hr 48 min I was very chuffed with my 10 hr 49 min finish all things considered. My biggest goal to date was achieved, I am an Ironman!! ... Or having a shortened swim, am I?
  13. Thinking of going between 100-120kms at the cradle on Saturday - with a 4-5km brick run
  14. Wow me too! long efforts on the weekends are becoming a chore - tempted to start doing shorter rides and runs
  15. Does anyone know what British Airways' allowance is with regards to bike bags? is it an extra charge or can it be your 'checked-in' baggage like with Kulula?

  17. Not too sure where I am sitting (with it being my first one) ... After a 3 week holiday of doing nothing in Europe, I hit the training in earnest on the 7th January. Since then, training has been consistent - averaging around 45kms of running per week and 150kms cycling. Noteworthy sessions including Johnson Crane marathon and a 160km ride to Bela Bela. Have Jeppe half coming up this weekend and Race to the sun on the following weekend. Am still yet to get into the pool and need to start spending more time in the saddle. A mate's bachelors in Mozam the weekend before PE will also make things interesting...
  18. Wow! thanks so much for the detailed reply - I really appreciate it. I am wanting to do a bit of both - I am entered for Race to the Sun on the 16th Feb, but would also love to start getting into stage races such as Sani etc. I have had experience on trails - but was a while ago before I found the dark side of road riding! I weigh just shy of 80kgs - will look at the option of changing out the wheel set. Thanks again for the response!
