  1. To my knowledge, Jeroen developed these plans. In all my past interactions with him, Karvonen is what he used for HR zones. Hence my previous comments. My zones are set up that way in all my software and on my Garmin. So that's what I work on - and if it's not right, it's not right. All of this reminds me - I think it's about time I do a resting HR test again and adjust accordingly.
  2. ...or maybe you don't have your correct maximum?
  3. Hmmm.... RHR = Resting heart rate MHR = Max heart rate HRR = Hear rate reserve = MHR - RHR TZ intensity = int-perc x HRR + RHR Zones: 1: 20-40% of HRR 2: 40-60% 3: 60-80% 4: 80-90% 5: >90% That's the way I have it...
  4. Also note the HR zones are based on Karvonen formula, which takes resting HR into account.
  5. I was wondering whether I was the only one wondering "where's the Stumpie in all this?"
  6. Yeah, I can sign on fine initially. You then register on this Livingvitality site, incl "activation" via email. During that process it picks up I have a Mapmyfitness account (which I do have, played around with it on the phone app temporarily). It requires you to gove you username and password for the site. I can enter my password (which I can use to sign on with in another session, so password is correct) but the place to enter my existing username is greyed out - you can't enter anything. So it comes up complaining about the credentials. But I did pop them an email as well, will see what gives.
  7. Dumb question - maybe somebody else ran into this. Have an existing account which they pick up - likely email addr match. I can't enter my username... so the validation says my mapmyfitness password is invalid?
  8. Bloody glad I was wearing my Bell and not this on Wednesday afternoon...

    Formula 1...

Me being dumb again... but how the heck did Massa even get as high as 10th?!
  10. Nothing major, just got a set of Selle Royal grips for the Stumpie over the weekend. Hope to solve some issues... Felt fine on 1st ride, now must fine-tune the angles a bit.
  11. I think it was Jeroen calling it rubbish, quoting some proven advantage percentages and then adding something to the tune of "otherwise we won't have seen a 14% drop in power over the last 4 years". I suspect he wasn't talking about Eskom.
  12. Aaag Puncheur, no worries, I'd have told myself to consult rule 5. The few here that know me, knows I'm about as laid back as it gets, I'm floating just above horisontal. "Gevrek" is the good Afrikaans term! But you also know by now the worst people to completely PO are the quiet ones... Yeah, maybe if I go for a namechange it should be "Dopey" and not "Grumpy"... but since this is a cycling forum... Soooo... I pulled a group up (which I of all people managed to catch on the DOWNHILL), into the front group after the descend, I sit up to catch a breath. Cue braking session 1, for a guy who fell from a previous group, think second or third speedbump. No warnings, nada, just seeing guys scatter and braking like hell. Knowing the route, I obviously did not want to be at the back when we hit the Simondium road, but I ended bunched in after that session behind a guy who refused to ride over the speedbumps. I sorted that on the last speedbump and chased -again- over the growing gap. Just caught the group, tried to work forward when we turned left. Hardly turned left, everybody out the saddle... then we slam on the brakes so hard (again, no warning) that I nearly went over the bars.... next moment, everybody sprints again. No sign of what caused the braking. *grrrrr* Then, everybody merrily humming along, some guys from the back of the group, or possibly smaller groups coming harder on the flat areas, overtake us. Now, I was just inside white line, the guy outside me on the white line. Imagine our confusion when we had to bump elbows, squeezing in, because the idiots from the back were over two wide outside him... WITH CARS APPROACHING! That was when I said my words to him... and it was hardly out when I literally skidded sideways pulling brakes... just for everybody to sprint off again. Again, no warnings, no visable reasons up the road... and then I just went into my stubborn mode and said stuff everybody and all the horses they rode on, if I do it on my own, I do it on my own, but you go ahead and write each other off. My wife hardly even asks my times, to her it's important that a) I come home and B) I enjoyed it. My daughter eyes the medal, but by now knows I did not win the race. There's not anybody else that I want to or have to impress. As for times - Wannabe, I think I was catching your group towards the end, there was just not enough road left. Think I ended a min or two behind you. And as for fun - there was a guy in black Castelli kit, I think...(?) With a number flapping. We had a lekker ride coming in together, wanted to meet him afterwards but never got the chance. If you're here, howzit... At times he pulled, at times I pulled, just having fun, riding bikes. That's what it's about for me.
  13. I bit my lip till now, but since you asked... (I guess I'll have to change my hub name to "ole Grumpy" shortly) I got so PO'ed at the way the guys were riding, that I told one guy on the Simondium road, shortly after having had to lock up for the second time, that I'd be happy to make it to the finish line in one piece. Shortly thereafter there was another incident and I just decided.... stuff dees sheet. I filtered back and left myself vulnerable to breaks, which happened. But at least I had space to duck and dive, of which there were plenty. Really, in the bit of riding I've done, I thought I was in some pretty yoyo-ing groups by now, but that was just beyond me. So, had a nice ride and enjoyed myself, came in in one piece and with a reasonable time, had some beers afterwards and generally enjoyed the day. More important things to me than trying to shave 3 or 10 or however many minutes off an already acceptable time. Only thing that time might influence is Argus seeding - and that's a mystery at the best of times. Haven't tried to offend anybody...
  14. Yeah, I'm also there. Sorry about the cracked lens thereafter, Capcha! Do you have a way we can search for other images or do we wait and check every refresh cycle?
  15. Agreed, plus it gives you input into more tools (play-thingies! ) from which at least you now get some form of TS values, etc. Even if just for guidance, I find it handy. I do get the odd weird spike, but I think you even get that on full-blown PT's. And as dracs mentioned, I've also seen high HR values correctly yielding lower power values, orat low HR values it shows high power values long before HR pops up. More than "just interesting" to me. No, I haven't yet tried it for full-blown power-based intervals, etc. Give me a break, I've hardly touched the roadbike! But may very well see what gives in those terms during Dec.
  16. Goodness - was that you?! That looked horrible. I don't know whether the track's officially closed now, but I think so. That crossing (that skew one, NOT the 1st one passing Boschendal) now has been filled up with tar in it and you hardly notice it at all. So no need for mats, either... Just a bump... but of course, still beware, esp if it's wet - you still hit it at an angle.
  17. Yeah, pumping in Paarl as well, we'd have been hard pressed to ride today! As for Stellies - trees blown over on golf course, a section of PRG's wall collapsed with one of the pillars having been blown over...I only saw the fire trucks, but apparently a tree blew over onto a house in Pniel/Johannesdal, right near the entry to town (from Hels side) I guess we can call this "a fresh breeze".
  18. The stress is about this being my first road "race" since my 200m-Argus (which was when my chain broke). So you need strong stuff to keep me calm in the chutes!
  19. I just got a Thomson's Elite with my bike - zero setback. (And I've used a setback one on my road bike for ages.) No complaints from me - but I ain't no pro rider...
  20. Yeah, I also like the old Helz - feels like mtb'ing on a road bike! New road is just... going up. Albeit a bit smoother, but where's the fun in that?! I trust they'll clean it up a bit like normally, because when we went over there on Sunday, it was a bit... overly interesting. There were places you had to pick your line carefully just for two of us riding together and having full view of obstacles, just from that bit of weather we had on the Sat. After my (by now notorius) Argus - I think my nerves will start revving up tomorrow and won't stop till I cross the finish line! Not that having had to fit two new tubes and tyres after Sunday's ride will help calm the nerves...
  21. Nothing left for her to read while you're cycli... oh never mind, I'm trouble looking for a place to happen!
  22. If you haven't tried it yet, I've found adco-ceterezine to be quite effective mostly - and does not make me too drowsy. But we have a number of different anti-histamines in the cupboard - both the mrs and myself are terrible hay fever sufferers. Sometimes you just need a different "plan of attack" and use something with different ingredients and it clears in two ticks. Good luck!
  23. Allez, I got a hay fever from hell two days before Karoo to Coast... then all that dust! Only got it sorted two weeks later courtesy of injection, but by then sinusses were FUBAR, so antibiotics and all that jazz. Good luck, I know how you feel... Hope you get it sorted!
  24. Now you're talking!
  25. That option was jokingly put forward to me after the w/e's fun with glass pieces to go with the Stumpie rather than the road bike. But a) I'll run out of revs on the 2x10 on the flats... no, that word gives me the heebees now!... flat sections and B) this will be my only chance for seeding for the big jol around the mountain next year. So SyncSA - how was the bike?! Had a good ride?
