  1. Hi guys and girls, Looking to get into mountain biking and need advice on what MTB to look at. Have a budget of R5000-R5500 and don't want to go to a bike shop and get screwed to put it lightly cos someone wants to make a quick sale. I went passed a shop today and was shown the Scott Aspect 640 and the Giant Revel 0 which were almost same price. Are they a good start or are there other Mtb's I should be looking at? Appreciate all the help and thanks in advance. Cheers
  2. Please help me i baught a Biancci with Ultegra components for my wife and i am not sure that the front gears are suitabally matched to the rear cluster. my wife is a biginner and i purchased the bike second hand from a tri athlete. the front gears are 52 and 39 teeth and rge rear is 12 to 23 does this soundcorrect as my gear ratio on my Scott are totally different. Regards Robin
  3. Have been looking for a MTB with good components for some time, and have the option of a 2nd hand SCOTT SCALE ELITE 29er for R10,400 (New R14,500). Have to make a decision today, so any comments would be most appreciated on the Specs. Thanks Michele Specs: • SPECS GEOMETRY SIZE CHART DOCSFrame Scale 29 Alloy 6061, custom butted superlight tubing, forged race disc dropouts PM160, bridgeless seatstays, Integ. 4. Hey guys. I have a Scott Scale 29 team and want to upgrade my Rockshox Tora. I have been looking at the DT Swiss XMM 100mm single shot. I dont know too much about these shocks as I was more accustomed to riding Downhill(4 years ago). What are your thoughts on this fork.
  5. Hi guys, looking for the 101 on taking apart my bike and cleaning, lubeing and re-asembly. What tips and methods do you have? I have a DS scott
  6. I have decided to buy a 29er(at last) Need help to decide between 3: Specialized Camber Carbon-Mixed components weighs 12.5kg Scott Spark 910 - Full XT weigh 11.5kg Scott Spark 920 - Full XT/SLS mixed except shifter and brakes(SLX) weighs 12.1kg What must i choose???????
  7. I have an old Scott with V-Brakes. I want to upgrade to hydraulic disc brakes and I have a few questions. I’ve noticed that all bikes have a disc mount on the lower part of the seat stay. My disc mount is on the lower part of the chain stay. Will this make a difference as to what calliper I need? Are callipers a standard size and are all mounts a standard size? How will I route the hoses? My bike only has cable stops on it and obviously the hoses will not fit the narrower stops.
  8. If you had to choose any of the following bikes, which one would it be? I know that there are much more on the market, but lets try to narrow it down to these 2 for the discussion (to compare against others, start your own topic please ) The Scott comes in about 400g lighter (10.4kg, give or take a few grams) and sports SRAM XX and Shimano XTR brakes. The Specialized is specced more modestly with XO and Magura MT6. The Scott wheelset is 28h and the Specialized is 32h (probably a better wheelset). Price on both is similar. Scott has their CTD remote system that operates from the handlebar with the flick of a switch and Specialized relies on their Brain system to manage the suspension. Which one of the two (only these two) would you pick and why?
  9. I recently bought a 29er (at last). It is a Scott Scale 940 (2013). It has A combo wheelset of: Hubs - Syncros Spokes - DT Swiss Rim - Alexrims I want to upgrade to a lighter wheelset for racing. My bike weight is 12 kg (large) at the moment. Will I shead some weight or must I cont my current wheelset? I Have R5000 to spend. Which wheelset should I go for? Looking at brands like fulcrum, easton or Shimano XT.
  10. Has anybody perhaps had any dealings with SCOTTOLI on the HUB ?
  11. Hi guys I'm recently back on the saddle after about 8 years off it. My last bike (still have it) was a Giant Sedona from about 1925, so I thought I'd treat myself to some new hardware. Did some serious lurking on The Hub as well as hours of checking out reviews etc on the interwebs (must say, that was quite fun). Anyway, in my price range, it seemed that the Trek Mamba 2012 would be the bike to go for at around R9000. Great reviews all round and very little negative comment. I went to Cajees in Fourways to look for one, not knowing they don't do Trek and happened to see the Scott Scale 960. This bike retails for US$1419 in the States (The Mamba between US$900 and $1000) and I was quite pleased to see that it was marked at R12,000. It has better components than the Mamba, so I thought I could maybe stretch the extra 3 grand. Surprise, surprise, the sales guy said I could have it for R9500. So I bought it. Did I do the right thing? Is this the same bike as the US version? Haven't ridden it much yet as I bought it this morning, bought it looks absolutely like I got a great deal.....
  12. Got introduced to this company by a buddy I cycle with. I did a bit of research and have to say their prices are fantastic and customer service is very sharp. I sent a message on their Facebook page and had a reply within a few minutes. My Scott Scale Expert with a few tweaks valued at R24K was quoted by another company at R358.00 per month, these guys came in at R145.00 per month. This company is also run by cyclists which is pretty cool. Their Facebook page is: http://www.facebook.com/pages/I-Cycle-Insurance/347965448633128 Anybody else had any decent quotes on bike insurance lately?

  14. Hi I Have searched virtually every cycling store in Johannesburg in the search of a Scott Mens mountain bike jersey. Does anyone know who in Johannesburg stocks Scott apparel? Thanks
  15. Ok i have now narrowed down my shopping to these two bikes. I can get them both at exactly the same price. The catch comes in: The Giant i can get with tubeless conversion already on it. The Scott with original tyres. But in my opinion, the Scott is a better spec bike than the Giant. Also the Scott is 3x10 gear ratio wheras the Giant is only 2x10. So which one do i go for and why??? 16. Can anyone tell me what type of bearings the Scott Comp Disc IT Hub has? Is it a cartridge or cup & cone? It's the front hub on a Spark 29er Elite.
  17. Has anyone fitted a Fox RP23 to a Scott Spark 29er and was there a improvement?
  18. Hi guys, in 2 weeks im doing my 1st road 94.7 and im doing it on ny scott spark 50 with "knobies" Questions i have is: Do people ride with a camel-bak for hydration? Or just one bottle? How far are hydration points apart? What energy like bananas etc and how many should i take? What is a decent behinners pace to keep? 15kmph? Any other tips or tricks?
  19. According to Anita Meyer, CLT Boland Project, after their latest camera checking excursion in mid October it is clear that three Cape Leopards, Scott (BM12, Boland Male #12), Popeye (BM17, Boland Male #17) and Olive (BF14, Boland Female #14) have become regulars on the Wines2Whales routes. “Popeye (BM17, Boland Male #17) and Olive (BF14, Boland Female #14) have been spotted a number of times on the De Rust routes, while Scott (BM12, Boland Male #12) seems to be enjoying the Schapenberg trails. Thanks to the Wines2Whales cameras we have identified a new female that we would not otherwise have picked up on, and we also have new locations for known individuals. As Leopards are such wide-ranging animals, all locations identified by the cameras aid us in forming a rough idea of each individual’s home range. The cameras have also once again captured other animals in action such as large-spotted genet, small grey mongoose, porcupine, grysbok, duiker, honey badger and caracal,” says Meyer. In September 2011 the organizers of the Contego Wines2Whales MTB Adventure and Race powered by Maserati showed their support of the CLT Boland Project by donating five digital camera traps to the project. Information on the three leopards spotted on the Wines2Whales route: Scott (BM12, Boland Male #12) has been recorded over a very large area stretching from just north of Sir Lowry’s Pass, through the Steenbras Mountains and across the Kogelberg Biosphere reserve. Popeye (BM17, Boland Male #17) ranges quite extensively throughout Hottentots-Holland Nature Reserve and the Groenlandberg mountains and has previously been photographed near Houw Hoek Inn. Olive (BF14, Boland Female #14) has been recorded at three locations in the Groenlandberg Reserve within the dominant male BM17’s territory. For more information on the Cape Leopard and the work of the CLT Boland Project, go to www.capeleopard.org.za and www.facebook.com/capeleopard. Event Information: Starting in the Wine lands of Somerset West, riders will cross through (and over) 13 wineries, 26 private farms, six mountains, historic roads and mountain passes, nature conservation areas (including the Kogelberg Biosphere) before finishing within sight of the famous whales of Hermanus! CONTEGO WINES2WHALES MTB ADVENTURE: Friday, 2 November 2012 until Sunday, 4 November 2012 CONTEGO WINES2WHALES MTB RACE: Friday, 9 November 2012 until Sunday, 11 November 2012 Start Venue: Lourensford Estate, Somerset West Race Village: Oak Valley Sports Field, Elgin (Western Cape) Finish: Onrus Caravan Park, just outside of Hermanus (Western Cape) Follow us on Twitter: @w2wmtb Follow us on Facebook: Contego Wines2Whales For more information on the Contego Wines2Whales MTB Adventure and Race powered by Maserati visit www.wines2whales.co.za Click here to view the article
  20. The fourth edition of the nine-day stage race, which starts on April 26 next year, will see 300 teams from at least 16 different countries represented on the start line at Heidelberg, just south of Johannesburg. According to one of the organisers Craig Wapnick, there had been a surge of interest from the United States, Britain, Belgium and Australia in particular. “This is primarily due to the great magazine coverage we’ve received there as well as word of mouth from riders who’ve done the event.” To date, 70 foreign riders – compared to 28 in 2012 – have signed up for what used to be South Africa’s best-kept secret, with more queries being received on a daily basis. With at least 16 countries represented at next year’s event, the nine-day Old Mutual joBerg2c is steadily growing its reputation in international mountain biking circles. Photo: Kelvin Trautman Wapnick said this represented a steady and significant growth on the inaugural event, which fielded 12 overseas participants. He said negotiations were under way with well-known international riders who had expressed an interest in undertaking the 900km journey to Scottburgh on the KwaZulu-Natal coast. “It’s a great full-service ride across South Africa, on awesome trails through almost a hundred private farms, with genuine local hospitality and, of course, delicious food.” As an added bonus, said Wapnick, the final three days followed the same route as the world’s largest fully serviced mountain bike stage race – the sani2c. He said a longer event such as this was ideal for visitors wanting to maximise their stay and get a real feel for the South African landscapes and people. “The Old Mutual joBerg2c is known for its incredible single track, which is perfect for the millions of trail-loving riders around the world.” Although the event was sanctioned by Cycling South Africa, Wapnick said UCI points were not a current focus as the event catered for all levels of riders. “Our aim is to attract people who love riding rather than those who enjoy racing. However, we do make sure that the racing snakes are handsomely rewarded.” This year’s race offered a prize purse of R330 000. For riders just beyond SA’s borders (countries such as Namibia, Zimbabwe and Botswana) there is an unofficial African Challenge, with bragging rights going to the winners. He said those who were pressed for time could opt for the three or six-day versions of the event. Enter the Old Mutual joBerg2c before January 31 at www.joberg2c.co.za. 21. So since I twisted my ankle last week, I decided to take on the job of sanding and respraying my Scott Scale frame. Finished putting the bike back together last night, and still deciding on decals etc. Total cost so far is around R500 materials and about 6-7 hours of hard labour with all the sanding.
  22. I think that the only thing that the Specialised Concept Store in Melrose Arch specialises in is bad service! I went in there last week with a colleague of mine looking for a soft tail bike. The sales guys there (Ricky) said that they didnt have stock of a particular bike and that he would check at other stores for us and call me to let me know. One week passes - no call. My colleague went and bought a Scott from one of the more competent LBS' out there. I went into the concept store today and the same sales guy was there'; 1. When I asked why he didnt call me about the bike, he said "I was supposed to call you?" Äbout what" - this after I took the time to fill out my name etc on a piece of paper for him to get back to me. 2. The guy was completely unapologetic 3. His breath smelt like something died in his mouth, seriously, move inside a 1m radius of this guy at your own perril. 4. The store is extremely poorl;y stocked. And this is not the first time I have been in there and they havent had some of the basics. Bottom line, I will not shop there again and if I were you, I wouldnt either. If I ever need anything with a specialised brand name again, it wont be from the Melrose Arch store.
  23. Has anyone looked at the new 2013 Scott Spark 29? Apparently will have a lot more techno-wizardry built in. Opinions please. Is it worth saving money for this? http://www.bikerumor.com/2012/05/20/fox-unveils-2013-icd-electronic-suspension-remote-system-more/
  24. Spent a bit of time at CWCycles and saw that they do not sell Scott anymore. Used to see a few nice bikes there but it seems that they stopped selling the brand.
  25. Hi All, After a lot of research I've decided that this is my final 2 options. This will be my bike for a very long time (5+ years, at least) So I want to make the right choice. Will do the 2013 Epic on this bike as well. I'am 1.76 and weigh 72 kg and are an aggressive rider, so I do like a bike with a racing Geonometry. I have seen guys winning XC races on SC's before, which says that SC can also be raced, even though it does not have an aggressive Geo. Now I know R50k is a lot of money, but I will not buy another bike for a long time. Scalpel 2 29er (All is awesome, but I will change the AVID brakes to XTR trail) and also not very keen on the Rockshock Monach at the back. Will maybe change that to Fox RP23. Life time warranty on Cannondale Frame. R46500. 11kg. Scalpel has a mix of AVID / XT / XTR on. Santa cruz: Can custom build the bike the way you like, but will be more in the region of 60k+. 2 year warranty on frame. I will build it up with FOX kashima coated front and rear, XTR, with ZTR ARCH wheelset with chrisking Hubs. This is what I would love to have, but that will work out close to R73500k way to much... around 10.8kg SC with a XT build up, with cheaper wheelset, will still be R55600 around 11.7kg Is Santa Cruz really that awesome, even though it only has a 2 year warranty? Had a test drive with Scott spark 29'er and didn't like it. also had a test drive with trek superfly 100, awesome ride, but it is overrated in my opinion. Any opinions from people who have / had any experiences with these bikes, and any pointers that will make my decision a little easier?
