  1. Hi My name is Michael & I am new to the forum. Need help in buying my first bike. Had a look around over the weekend with a friend who is already riding & these are the the 3 bikes I came up with that I liked, doesn't mean it is the right choice: Specialized Camber 29 KTM Phinx 32.9 Silverback Sprada 2 I am looking for dual suspension & budget to spend on bike is +/- R20k I am 1.88m & weight +/- 85kg I really like the camber & when visiting shops & asking staff about it they all had the same answer " i do not really know about specialized, but I know they are expensive". The only shop with any info on the bike is the dealer selling it... Any input will be much appreciated. Hope to be riding soon, seems like a great community.
  2. Hi guys I need some help one of my lady friends wants to buy a new bike, she is 1.5 m tall and has a budget of R20000.00. A store tried to sell her a specialized Jett or a bianchi ethanol, I find the bikes under specced for that money. Any ideas would be appreciated.
  3. Hey guys. Not sure if this is a 'wear and tear' thing so wanted to get your opinions. My reasonably expensive saddle cracked through on both sides just in front of the rear rail attachment points on a normal road ride - no crash/extra weight. I weigh 73kg's for Pete's sake...This is the first time this has happened and on a fairly expensive saddle too. Do you think the guys at Specialized would stand behind their product and give me a new one? It's about two years old now and i mostly ride on the weekends. Can't attach a pic as it's too big.
  4. Hi Hubbers, Need to get my wife's specialized epic serviced, and will be in Cape Town soonish. Where would be the best place to get the fork brain and remote brain serviced? What price might I expect? Thanks

  8. Just want to introduce myself, took up cycling 2 weeks ago after hurting my back a couple of months ago and being unable to jog anymore. Bought a Specialized Camber Comp Done nearly 200km in 2 weeks and I'm loving it! Oh and I'm from Windhoek in Namibia.

  10. From Bike Rumour: Cafe Roubaix Bicycles is a small bike shop located in historic downtown Cochrane, Alberta. Like many shops, it got it’s start in a garage. Where owner Dan Richter had been building high end custom wheels for friends and local racers. A twenty year veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces, starting Cafe Roubaix Bicycle Studio, was a culmination of a life long passion and a great way to force himself to meet new people. His military career, after stints in Afghanistan and elsewhere, was brought to an end due to post traumatic stress disorder. His shop, which opened in March, is located perfectly above an ice cream shop caters to road cyclist. It’s named after the famous 117 year old Paris-Roubaix race, because Dan wants every client to “roll away experiencing the same level of service and attention that every European professional demands from team mechanics, coaches, and equipment providers.” The problem is…. Specialized Bicycles is requesting Cafe Roubaix Bicycles change it’s name or else they’ll huff and they’ll puff and they’ll sue due to trademark infringement. While Dan’s lawyer claims he has a case, since the name is an icon of bike culture, and there are dozens of products with the name e.g. the Fuji Roubaix Road Bike and Challenge Roubaix Tires. But to pursue this case would cost an estimated $150,000, so the small shop must capitulate. According to Specialized Canada, the company is defending it’s legally owned trademark because it is legally required to defend or lose it. For Dan, changing his stores name is a lot more than just a sign. It’s about rebuilding a reputation he has carefully cultivated building custom wheels and providing exceptional customer service. You can find directions to Dan’s shop, pick up a jersey, or just learn more about his shop here. Via Calgary Herald
  11. Only got R25000 to spend help out plz I'm new to this mountain biker hard tail 29er
  12. On my Merida and the wife's Giant and Specialized, the rear brakes are on the right side. This made sense to me as I am used to mostly using the right hand for brakes like on the motorbike. Bought myself a bike last week but the brakes are swapped around, so rear is on the left. Googled it and apparently it differs between countries being a function of which side of the road the ride ....

  14. Specialized launched their 2014 models in Seefeld Austria. As usual some really groundbreaking stuff from this market leader. The Epic has had some small changes but most noticeably is the XC and Marathon versions. This XC S-Works model is running 1X11 with 90 mm of travel. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7320/9311014717_57bacd153a_b.jpg IMG_3330 by OddPix1, on Flickr This is the Epic Comp Aluminium. Great ride. http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2808/9311023461_220f29030b_b.jpg IMG_3342 by OddPix1, on Flickr
  15. So my company decided to be really nice to me for xmas with a nice bonus. So the obvious route to be is to blow it all on a bike / upgrade, I am current riding a cannodale 29er hard tail lefty (the 2012 model). Its a great bike but is starting to show its age. I am wanting to go duel. So i have seen the new specialized epic and i am in love. Cant stop thinking about that bike. It would be an amazing new bike. But the carbon is a little out my price range and would mean i have to go aluminum. But then i have also been thinking about maybe building a custom bike with a santa cruz tall boy carbon frame and using all the components from my cannodale. This would mean i would have a carbon frame with kinda good components. So, I leave the fate of my decision to you hubbers.
  16. My Brother-In-Law has recently relocated to Aus and wants to buy a road bike as he feels the roads there are probably a lot safer than the Jhb roads to cycle on. I would appreciate some opinions/feedback on which bike and why. They are all similarly priced. He is looking at one of the following bikes: http://www.specialized.com/au/en-au/bikes/road/tarmac/tarmac-sl4-comp-ultegra#specs http://www.pmcycles.com.au/pinarello_sdg_ultegra_6800_11_speed http://www.trekbikes.com/au/en/bikes/road/endurance_race/domane_5_series/domane_5_2/#/au/en/model/details?url=au/en/bikes/road/endurance_race/domane_5_series/domane_5_2 http://www.trekbikes.com/au/en/bikes/road/performance_race/madone_5_series/madone_5_2_h2_compact/#/au/en/model/details?url=au/en/bikes/road/performance_race/madone_5_series/madone_5_2_h2_compact not sure why both the Treks come with compact cranksets though.
  17. Five years ago Christoph Sauser started a charity organisation called Songo.info with the aim of getting kids in Kyamandi on bikes. Sipho Madolo, a promising rider from Songo.info, recently took on the Wines2Whales Race with Sauser. Click here to view the article
  18. After spending to much time riding on the dirt and after enjoying Killarney racing week after week I have decided to upgrade my road bike and try this road racing. I have a 2010 specialized Roubaix Pro, Ultegra, Zipp 404 Firecrest wheels. Now I want something a bit more racey and cool. On my shooping list 1. Colnago C59 - They now come with disc brakes - wtf 2. Pinarello Dogma Think 2 - Everyone with a bit of money seems to have one! To popular 3. Merckx EMX 525 - The Cannibal, gotta be an option! 4. Cervelo R5 - Clean lines, mmm 5. Specialized SL4 - Only had specialized bikes so keen for a change. My preference these days is Shimano, but some may say those Italian frames deserve campy?
  19. Interesting reading on one guy's experience on the two bikes. NOT MEANT TO FLARE UP THE WHOLE FREAKING DEBATE AGAIN, but rather just to share another perspective. 20. Hi Hubbers, With the new trails being finished in Jonkershoek for the season, it's time to update iRide Africa's trail map of the area. I'm having issues with naming the trails though and am interested to see what I could get input from the locals. PLEASE-I don't want made up names or suggested names or names that you would like to call the trails. I am after the official trail names as named by the trail builders if possible. Using Strava segment names is the easiest way to get names of trails but they are often made up by the user and sometimes not fair on the original builders of the trail. What I (think) are correct on my map are the following; Lower, middle and upper canary Boletus Elliotti (masons/never ending story) Radiata (finally back! tiding section!) Patula Fire hut trail 1, 2, & 3 Trails that I don't know the names for; The 3 new canaries above upper? The new dbl black diamond run The flow section that runs from the new dbl black diamond (I have heard it called flow trail) Trail 8 (runs towards gate from dam wall) Trail 7 Specialized Epic 2 section above never ending story Please give me some input-I guess the best is to speak to Meurant and Bennett, but am interested in the response.
  21. Freeride mountain bikers Matt Hunter and Darren Berrecloth are celebrating their 10-year anniversary as riders in the Specialized family. Although they've ridden all over the world, and are both from British Columbia, the guys rarely spend time shredding together. To celebrate their decade aboard Specialized bikes, Matt and Darren teamed up with photographer Sterling Lorence to capture more of the iconic imagery which propelled them to their legendary status.
  22. If you are sensitive to self scrutinee and constructive criticism. Dont bother reading any further. you will find this offensive!!! I recently got off my IDT to allow enough oxygen flow through to my brain to have a "Eureka" moment..... we (cyclists) are all idiots!!! yes....u heard me right. And here is why: Every single person i know in this sport act like a school boy being caught in the act fapping in a cubical during break time when they are ambushed into a conversations on topics other than cycling. If we are seeded anywhere in the single numeric of the Argus, we believe it is one of us that will podium on the day and sitting on the cross bar of our bikes (pre race) are going to get us a spot on the Intellibus team. --- idiots We also believe we have the right to shout commands such as "MOOOVE!!" and "KEEP LEFT!!" all the way through each ride so we can be respected as the faster rider (only to be caught later in the race) --- Idiots Strava is the latest tool to show that you are into this game and mean business. Even though you might find this hard to believe..... no one checks what you have done except your stupid cycling mates. --- idiots Having a Pimped or lighter bike is only a indication of your stupidity level in this sport, and some oke on a Raleigh RC3000 is waiting to kick your butt. Or maybe he has already. But you pretended not to notice while you were busy scanning your stupid monitoring equipment indicating how much fart you have accumulated from the last banana consumption......... Yes you!!!..... dont look behind you....... you know who you are. --- idiots having a friendly chat with Joe Soap of cycling in the local bike shop and then ignoring everyone at Killarney with your kit on is absolutely rediculous. You do realise people still recognise you with cycling kit on? ---Idiots even if you did make it onto the Pro scene does not take away your courtesy and personality. You are still allowed to act like a normal decent person. --- idiots Going to the local Pub with a Specialized shirt on means nothing to the chics. They dont cycle and they dont care. Its how you get her home that matters. And taking chics to your Moms house aint cool. --- idiots Why do we act like @ssholes towards cyclists when we drive cars, and the same when we ride our bicycles?? --- idiots This sport is becoming more and more brain dead as it grows. And the more i think about it.... the more i am starting to believe the bicycle has a slow releasing brain killing poison which is transferred into the @sshole of the guy / girl riding it. I am one of the idiots, so dont criticise me, rather try and understand and make sense of this theory.
  23. Hi Guys So I only started riding in the beginning of the year, and have done quite a few xc races this year, they've been fun and great. Then I did the "Giba gravity enduro" which i loved 10 times more than any other race I did, and realised that enduro riding is what I wanna do. So currently I have a Specialized epic 29er, and its great and everything, but for trail riding I must be honest I don't find it very confidence inspiring. I dunno what it is, probably the head tube angle, but it feels twitchy in corners and it just doesn't feel quite right for riding at places like Giba Gorge etc. (even my cheap Titan Comp 29er felt better in this regard). Anyway so I'm in the market to sell that bike and get something better suited to trail/enduro riding. So can anyone advise me on what to get for around R20k??? I'll probably get around that for my Specialized. I've been looking this week at the the Santa Cruz Blur LT 2.3. I can get the frame brand new for 900$, and won't have to worry about import duties or VAT etc cause I have a friend coming over from the States soon who can bring it for me. Here some links on the spec of the frame, and reviews etc. http://www.bicycling...update?page=0,0 http://www.santacruz...feb10_LT2_O.pdf http://www.santacruz...s.co.uk/blurlt/ http://www.santacruz...urlt/blurlt.pdf http://www.bikeradar...e-only-09-36977 So here's my thinking it's a 26er, which means I should be able to pick up wheels and a fork for pretty cheap (in comparison to 650b or 29er). And should be able to complete the bike for around 20k hopefully. Is it worth it getting a 26er? I see all the new AM/Enduro bikes are going 650b/27.5 (whatever you wanna call it). Would love to get a Santa Cruz Heckler 27.5 full build, which is 3000$, a bit pricey though. Sorry bit of a long post, but I'm new to the enduro/am game and my knowledge is limited. Any advice/comments would be highly appreciated. Thanks Nick
