Ok... So, I'm probably doing the Argus on an SS.

What ratio do you guys suggest? Its an old MTB, been riding mostly 32-13 but find Kloof Nek in Cape Town is killing me. On the flat sections I'm spinning like a big dog.

This is my first Argus as well so I have no idea what to expect. I did Suikerbossie 32-14 and it was more then comfortable. I've got no idea what the rest of the hills are like and so have no idea what ratio to pick..

HELP!

Thanks!

32-16, 32-17 or if you want it easy the 32-18 combo.

Riding on the road and riding in the dirt are two different animals

Thanks, not sure if you are referring to the road or mtb ride? I'm referrig to the Argus road ridesorry. I'm doing the MTB one on my geared dual-sus...

I've found 32-16 on the road is just too easy - Did the Burger and only droppd out of big blade (44) once, in the beginning.

I did 94.7 on my 24" bmx with a 60 inch ratio. It was perfect. Completed the race with a 27km/h average. Because you are doing it on an mtb I would suggest 60" or max 62" where with a SS roadbike 65"

The inch ratio is worked out by multiplying tha factor of the front and rear sprockets with the diameter of the rear wheel in inches.

My mtb wheel diameter is 26.5 inches x for instance 32/14 = 60.57" ratio and that would be perfect.

It should give a speed of 28,77km/h at 100 rpm.

94.7 was my first time on SS and it sucks when the bunch accelarates above 40km/h and you just cant pedal fast enough to stay on.

Jo that sounds scientific, must say I've never heard of that nomenclature!

The acceleration will happen on and SS and so will spinning on the flat stuff. At least it'll help for cramping!

Ah .. thought you were talking SS on the MTB side of the trail.

On the road ... factors to further mess up your calculations ... are you riding on a slick or semi-slick ... if so then you could ride a far tighter combo or larger big blade.

Guess you have some experimenting to do this week!

Hahahahahaha. Yes. Its on the road, on a MTB, in a Suit... With a moustache. hahahahaha.

I'll have to go and "rekkie" the course this week...

Sorry for my earlier post as I actually thought you were serious about this.

if its going to be a joke then why do you even care about your ratios. Just ride anything.

I'm serious about not chopping off if that makes it any better. This is for a jol, but I'm not planning on being out there the whole day, or on pushing up any hills...

depends on your fitness really.

did it last year on my fixie, 46-18 and didnt really struggle on any hills too badly.

coming down was another story, would probably try 46-17 if i did it again(forgot to enter or substitute this year, oh well)

Which other hills in CT did you ride with that gearing? I've only done suikerbossie. I've also attempted Kloof nek and Kloof road on the 32-14 but ja I chopped OFF.

Just had a look at the weather and maybe go as light as possible. 55km/h wind.

YES please, UNBELIEVABLE (Hugh Bladen accent)

This is an interesting thread - new topic to me. Surely you'd go with the ratio that yo ucan just about make up on Suikerbossie (I think that is the steepest part of the Argus). Anyway, keem to hear what you decide after reccieing the route.
