Hi Hubbers,

Please could I have opinions on various products on the market for sports nutrition.

For the last six months I have been using USN products but have heard it is not considered to be the best or good for you at all.

I consider myself to be a competitive cyclist and compete in both MTB marathons and road bike events so need as much help to keep ahead of the pack and for body recovery.

Protein 2x a day(morning and night)

Diet Fuel 2x a day(snacks in morning and afternoon)

CLA tablets 2x a day.

Cytopower when racing and VO2 max tablets.(I have heard 32GI is the heat at the moment)

Recovermax after long races.

Does this stuff work?? What about the million other brands and products on the market??

I do feel stronger on the bike and have lost weight but this might be due to increased training and the fact that I have lossed weight.

All input from sports nutrition guru's would be appreciated

If you're serious, I would suggest speaking to a sports dietician (note: not nutritionist). Dieticians must be registered with the HPCSA, while anyone can call themself a nutritionist.

Balsie could you not get the same effects through eating correctly? You yourself asked if these supplements do anything. A balanced diet with enough protein, carbs, etc should achieve what you need to perform at an optimum level. You'll also save yourself a fortune! Purely my opinion, I'm no expert :D

Thanks Guys!!

The stuff is extremely expensive. Aim is to optimally perform not really to lose weight. Eating healthily but I was under impression that this stuff would give me MORE of an advantage.

I think I am going to consult a sports dietician next time I am in the big smoke!

If you pm MDW, he has some insight on supplements, but moreso on how your body absorbs nutrients. In a nutshell, and at the risk of standing corrected...If you are eating healthy then the supplements will do nothing, your body absorb what it needs, nothing more.

My wife is a registered dietician and has undertaken e-mail consults for peeps in both isolated areas and overseas.

PM me if you want contact details.

Balsie, why so much of supplements?

are you an extremely competitive cyclist? one of the greatest pleasures in life is the variety of food that we can enjoy, and i believe a good diet can provide the majority of nutrition that you are looking for. i also enjoy some competitive cycling, but i keep it to just an energy drink for during rides, protein shake for the mornings (mix with pronutro) and then i have mass builder just so that i dont lose too much of weight from the cycling and a multivitamin. but after that, no other supplements.

and dont forget PEANUT BUTTER is king!!!!

How many mg's are your CLA tabs?

Put in some reading hours and educate yourself. I've seen very dodgy supplement advice on the hub. Read unbiased articles and not what supplement brands write on their websites.

Dont try and figure out if "USN" or any brand is what you need. Go and look at individual products, what they do for you and how their ingredients compare to competing product from other brands.

You might find that 1 brand has the protein that you want and another has the endurance product you want.

My take:

Veridian Sports Multi - Its the best MV on the market and I will argue that away with anyone, BUT you pay big for it.

Solal - Omega 3,6,9

Spirulina - :-)

Solal CLA

Vit C complex

Calcium Supp.

Neurobian once a month in heavy training weeks

Vit B Complex Jab with Neurobian and 4 more weeks 2ml a week

32Gi for training and racing, the juice and the chews ;-)

Soya Isolate 89/11 isolate MD combo for recovery

Now one thing I need to stress, supplements are only supplements to a HEALTHY DIET.

I eat mainly organic, raw and natural foods, I eat nothing processed. I eat 8-9 meals a day, in that are mainly complex carbs, white meat easily digestible proteins, 6-7 portions of fruit and veggies, milk is goats, rice or soya, occassionally a hormone infested cow youghurt as a treat.

Freak = Dam Sure ;-)
