Hello All,

Looking at JB building me some wheels...

Long story - but rims must be v-brake compatible.

Mavic still have v-brakes rims on CRC, hence the question:

The 819s are slightly more expensive - and are UST compatible/ready.

The 719s are not...

I've always made use of rimstrips for a conversion - so never really bothered checking out the advantages of UST...

What are your thoughts? Remember reading somewhere that if you go with UST, you're limited to UST tyre choices, which are more limited(?) and pricier(?)...

Anyone have a good reason why I should favour the 819s over the 719s?

Many thanks!

At risk of having a conversation with myself...

Checked out MTBR.com, and the reviews for the 819s are decidedly more favourable than for the 719s...

With this being said though - are my concerns about UST in general worth worrying about?

Once you go tubeless you never go back and if need be you can remove the valves and run an old school (presta tube set up) or if you are lucky can even manage to seat normal foldable tyres as tubeless must just then run the pressures a little higher

I say 819

I'm tubeless now - and agree - will never go back!

All I'm trying to figure out, is if I go with the UST option on a rim - am I bound to only using UST tyres - and if so, is this more of a limitation/cost issue than it's worth?

Go with 819 i regret not having gone UST when i built my wheels.

Thanks GB - why though? Are UST tyre choices limited?

Ok... I've googled - and am now beginning to recall the arguments for and against, and the various options regarding the use of non-ust tyres on ust rims...

Which probably means that my 'limited-options' question is partly answered... Which also probably means I'll be putting in the order for the 819s soonish - unless someone rattles this thread during the course of the next few days... :P

I had 819's for a few years, these wheels are VERY tough. I rode the Bollocks out of them, and no issues. Also, they are tubeless, once you have used a ust rime you sill NEVER go back.

for most of the time I was running the Specalized 2bliss tires.

You can always use non-UST tyres & tubes on your UST rims when you need to. Actually you can run certain non-UST tyres as tubeless aswell.

Th 819 is also a bit stronger than the 719.

Have you asked JB his opinion on these rims?

I have 819's and would recommend them if you are planning on running a UST set-up.

Not at all light, but they do seem to be pretty strong.

Thanks Splat - I'm more interested in strength than weight in any event - want something that will last, and it's not as if I can't afford to lose a few kilo's, rather than imposing that duty on my rims! :P

JB has given input - albeit not specifically on whether to take 719s or 819s.

Don't the 819's have the proprietary nipple fastening arrangement. I gather that this is their weak point so to speak, and was advised by a mate who has a set to rather go for a rim with standard type of nipple fixing, even if you then need the rim tape/strips. There is a Stans ZTR to suit V-brakes, my ZTR355's are superb as a UST with the rim tape.. I agree with Splat, if you plan to get JB to make them up, get his opinion first.

Aw shoot...

Came across one review of them which recounted a hairline fracture from nipple 'eye' to eye - which might be related to what you're talking about...

As for the Stans - I would be keen, but the problem is sourcing them... AFAIK, hardly anyone brings v-brake rims into the country now, which sees me relying on CRC etc...

Was always going to chat with JB before placing the order, and will raise your point. Thanks!
