My Sram Red Front Derailleur Is A Bit Twitchy...

My FD is a lil bit niggly especially shifting up to the big blade...

It's okay now after some serious tech support on Saturday night before the Argus.

 

MariusL told me that the pros most often use the Sram Force front derailleur instead.

This morning, I see a review of the newest Spez TT bike and everything is Red, except for the front derailleur.

 

Hmmm...

Anyone have a similar technical niggle?

Interesting this SRAM red stuff..... some pro's opted for shimano cassettes and chains as well???? Shimano Dura ace is a few grams heavier for good reason.... but dont feel alone cause if you look at the Campi bikes at Roubaix... they also throw in some chorus bits and pieces!!!

The pro's actually used a modified FD with a RED upper linkage and the Force blades for added stiffness so they could shift under immense power.

 

That isn't really a consideration for us mortals.

When you say twitchy...what do you mean exactly?

 

When we were looking at it on Saturday eve - when you shift onto the big blade the chain rams against the inside of the big blade, and doesn't seem to slide nicely from small to big blade... played around with the height and angle of the fd... but there is this sickening screaching sound when shifting onto the big blade... Airbender is running cannondale hollogram cranks and chainrings (but I don't think that is the problem).

I had a look at the ride in question on Saturday afternoon.

 

The FD was not shifting lekker and as much as you adjusted the stoppers, it wouldn't shift up to the big blade - you would have to hold the shifter to shift up for a bit longer to get it to go to big blade. Sometimes it would not shift or the shifter would get stuck.

 

After me, he went to MariusL, and they 'turned' the FD to make it shift better..... it could be the shifter or the FD.

On the race, I had zero issue after some adjustments made on Sat eve.

It was smooth as I am used to it.

It had to be 'ridden in', I guess.

 

Have been off the bike and in jet planes & boardrooms since.

Hope the niggle is gone.

Are you sure the rings are installed in the right "orientation" they need to be in specific areas so the ramps and pins "pickup" the chain properly...

 

May be that... also at very low "mechanic on a bench speed" they sound dreadful, but when riding at the right speed they pickup much faster

Agreed, Tarmac...

 

With momentum and wattage in riding, it felt good.

 

I will keep an eye on it.

I luv having Red all round. Wanna keep it that way! :blush:
