Please help with this question - the Epic Organisers will disqualify you if you are found to ride with your Route Tracker activated on the Garmin. I phoned Avnic (the Garmin distributors) - they adivised to switch off the GPS (almost like for "Indoor Use"). Last time I checked, the Epic will mainly be taking place outdoors - is there a way that I can still see distance, speed, ascent, etc, but not track the route?

i really don't think the organisers are going to start playing around with your garmin to see if the tracker is on. they essentially don't want people making routes that they can go re-ride, as lots of the route is through private land

Thanx - so I just plead ignorant? Is it worth it to take the chance? Its my first Epic, so don not want to take the chance of being banned for life and kicked off the Race? Or am I just being paranoid?

I was the same last year. It is purely so people don't ride the route except for the race. I wouldn't worry too much. Good luck and enjoy the race.

i still think its just pressure from one of their sponsors who does heart rate monitors with red buttons on the watch. They fell asleep at the wheel and this company with gps technology and ZERO cycling credentials stole their marketshare. tough tekkies.

it's not like the route is top secret anyway. they print maps of it, there's live tracking and 1200 people ride it. it's not like you ride with blindfolds or mr smith and jones come and erase your memory after each stage.

Don't get me wrong - i'm totally against illegal trail riding too, but don't think this stops it in anyway.

AND to be deadly fricken obvious, the only fun stuff that is ridden is already open access. take welvanpas, kluitjieskraal, eselfontein, groenlandberg, and the grabouw trails out of last year and you have some boring ***. or a railway line.

I'd tell y'all to keep an eye on garmin connect for the prologue route next sunday, but i think it's already there.

Thanx Guys - was considering the R199 cycling computer tip, but what is the point then of having the Garmin? And I can track the climbing with the Garmin, so can see how many hills still to come...

There is a tracking option that will record on the unit the route, as long as this is off I believe you will be fine (its off by default)- how you could ever really ride and follow the route is beyond me anyways - I too am in this boat cancerning epic and have phoned around...if asked I will plead ignorance and ask "what is garmin connect"...Barry and co use garmin, there is a garmin team, and many other top guys use garmin and I dont see them switching off the gps functionality....

I think it's more for pre-mapping the route and using it to direct you rather than the route markers IMO, so that they can change the route and not have anyone complaining about the detour should it be necessary, or am I wrong?
