I am thinking of having a set of 29er wheels built around Hope hubs and Crest rims.

Are DT Swiss Revolution spokes appropriate on a 29er MTB wheel-set or should i rather go for Competitions ?

I would love a nice light set of wheels but am concerned about stiffness and breaking spokes.

My weight fluctuates somewhere between 85 and 92 Kg and I am possubly the least agressive rider on two wheels. Gently down the ou wapad on Karoo 2 Coast is about technical as I go but I ride a lot of district roads, jeep track etc.

Any advice greatly appreciated

92 kg's? I would go for the Comps.

I know there are many knowledgeable guys who say that the Revos are the only way. Me? Well, think of it this way. You might save 2 grams/spoke. So 130 grams for both wheel. For this you are going to pay an extra R600(last time i looked).

The last wheelset I built was Comps with Crest rims and Dirty flea hubs (and brass nipples). If I had to do it again, I would do the same.

Anyone know who stocks revolution spokes here in SA?

Their agent in SA (although I have no idea if they stock the spokes)

DDP TECH

As it turned out, I had the wheels built using Revolution spokes and Industry 9 hubs because I found a pair in New York when I was there a few months ago at less that a pair of Hopes would have cost me.

Johan Bornman built the wheels and although he rubished the hubs on Thehub ;-) , I really like the wheels. They are light, stiff and sound like a squadron of Spitfires as you roll along ! They also look very good......

Whichever combination you choose, I still think the difference lies in the quality of the build.

I like your use of "appropriate". We have to distinguish between strength, durability and appropriateness.

Yes, the Revolutions are srong enough. Strength is a once-off thing. If you get on the bike and they don't break, then it is all strong enough.

Durability is the ability of a component to carry a load over a great distance. And again, yes, the Revolutions are durable enough. Thanks to extra forging (which comes at a price), they are more durable than their thicker and heavier counterparts by several tens of million cycles.

Are they appropriate? That's the question. In my view, they're just too flexible for comfort and I'm not even going to try and define comfort. Paired with lightweight rims they flex significantly more than more sensible combinations when I carry out a final wheelbuilding procedure that puts lateral stress on the wheels. However, in the field they perform well and the rider will never know that they flex somewhat.

On a purely subjective level, I'd like to pair them on large wheels with stronger rims than Crests. Maybe an Arch? Pr something else.... not only NoTubes makes rims, believe it or not.

You need not worry about breaking spokes though. They are very, very, very durable.

As for Industry 9 hubs. I doubt I trashed them here. Please correct me but I said they're nothing special. However, we (and I) make decisions based on suitablility and emotion. Emotion is what makes us choose a brand that's more expensive and on paper just the same as its cheaper competitor, yet we still choose it. I make decisions like that all the time and if I9 hubs floats your boat, they're the right hubs for you.

Having the privilege of working with just about all hubs commercially available, I've lost the ability to get emotional about products and choose in a pure, boring pragmatic way.

Just a comment on Supercomp spokes. I don't see the point of introducing non-standard nipple sizes when a standard size does everything and more. The risk of arriving at a bike shop in say, Sabie, with a supercomp wheel is that the shop will not have a replacement nipple or spoke.

Stick with spokes that have 2mm ends.

I had a set of Arch rims with revolution spokes and they were fine. I weigh 82kgs though and my weight doesn't change much. i mow have a set of crest rims with supercomp on the back and revolution on the front. Did sani2c on them and no probs so far. whe i got the original wheels built in the Uk the guzzie there suggested that i shouldn't get the 355 rim (same as crest at the time) lace them up with revolution spokes and my weight, so i went for arch rims. Both have been very good so far though.

Any pointers for DT Swiss spokes source here in Jhb yet? Got some in from CRC, 1/2 were Revolution and the other 1/2 Competition (their error). Don't think its a good idea to build using both, although I tried: its for a Lefty front wheel where the rim is offset and the fatter 'uns are no match for their skinny relative.

So looking for 16+ 256mm DT Swiss Competition Black 2mm-1.8mm ... ?

Thanks
