Im starting to upgrade my grouset from 9spd to 10spd.

So i got the 10spd crank but the rest is still 9spd.

What chain should i use on it?

Should i keep using the 9spd chain, or get a 10spd.

Whats the right way to go, and why?

you can use a 9spd chain on a 10spd crank no prob, but not other way around, but you would need to get a 10spd chain when you get the cluster, shifters etc

If I were you, I would keep using the 9 speed chain with the 9 speed cassette until you change the cassette to 10, then get a 10 chain.

The chainrings does not really make a difference whether they are 9 or 10 speed with a 9 or 10 chain, you wont be able to tell the difference anyway.

My understanding is that on a 10 speed cluster, one more chainwheel is added into the space of the rear freehub body, which is fixed. Therefore the spacing between the chainwheels is closer.

A 9 speed chain will work on a 10 speed front chainwheel setup.

I have my doubts that it will sit well, or give you decent shifting, on a 10 speed cluster though. It will be a fraction too wide.

A friend recently bought a bike of the hub and he went on his first ride the gears didnt work 100%. He brought the bike for me and then we realised that the 10sp bike and chain had a 9speed cluster on. Long story short is that the 10s chain works perfect on the 9 speed cluster. The problem was with the shifting but when its set on a specific sprocket then it runs smooth. it was an honest mistake and the cluster was swopped to a 10sp one. All sorted.

So please shorten the story for me further:

10 speed bike and chain, with 9 speed cluster? Did it have 10 speed shifters?

If there was a shifting problem, how is it that "Long story short is that the 10s chain works perfect on the 9 speed cluster". Setting the shifting to a specific sprocket will "run smooth" but then you will have a single speed?

I am glad your friends story was honestly sorted, but the question still has not been clearly answered.

Yes a 10 speed chain will run on a 9 speed cluster (not recommended though)

However the shifting issues was from the fact that 10 speed shifters were being used, the indexing is for 10 speeds and not 9, you will only have joy in a select few gears.

The only thing on a bike not really fussy about speeds is a rear mech.

No doubts there my friend, it's plain and simple, the chain is too dik.

Ta. Got the indexing thing, hence my question.

However the 'riginal question was can you run a 9 speed chain on a 10 cluster?

Methinks, not well at all, but I stand ready to be corrected.

I think he said chainset.

Yes that works quite well (gain not 100% ideal)

9 speed chain on 10 speed cluster :o

Bly weg !!!!
