Keep em peeled for the bike, I want to get the guy who is going to buy it and also the f&%kers who committed the crime!!! It is a bike with lots of modifications and unique stuff so hopefully it will be found - but it isn't about finding the bike so much as finding the perpetrators! Thanks to everyone for the support and by safe on your rides tomorrow.

You will not, cyclists do not care.

That is a bit harsh to generalize like you do.

Sorry to hear about the bike jacking!! Not good! That why I realized that I am very fortunate and priviledged to live in a small town where things are not so hectic!

so sorry to hear this. I was encouraged to buy a new bike by two guys on the spruit 2 years ago. I still battle to ride past anyone whose hands i cant see or who is not walking with purpose. It is on my mind during every ride i do, which is sad as riding time used to be the most relaxed and enjoyable of my time.

Why cant this be lead by the hub? while not exclusive it must be the biggest market for sencond hand sales?

It could and should be a service that the hub offers users.

Concept in my head.

All users are incouraged to attach frame serial numbers of bikes owned by them and status. eg, Not for sale , for sale , stolen. only the owner can change the status.

Any one selling bike on the hub must clear serial number from this data base. And if i am wanting to buy a second hand bike from the LBS for example i can run the serial number.

It is to late to set it up after its been stolen. Be honest do you have the serial numbers writen down? If it is attached to selling bikes we would see the value of it and more would commit.

While this will not fix all the problems ,it will help those users who set it up. If we set it up and it catches one idiot selling stolen goods, it will be worth it in my opinion. With every further highjacking reported on the hub the more members will upload their serial numbers.

Just an idea i guess.

While I think Riprap may have been a tad insensitive there, I would have to agree with him; though apathy is not restricted to just cyclists in general. This subject comes up time and time again, someone gets jacked or hurt (or both) and there's this swell of voices with suggestions and opinions and outrage carrying the thread to a coupe of pages; and then as suddenly as it started, it goes away. If cyclists really cared, they would get together, in person and hammer out a way forward, even if it was to hand a memorandum to the press and the local police commissioner... but I doubt that'll happen, cyclists don't care unless it affects them personally.

Sorry about the incident and the injuries to your dad. Maybe everyone that rides at this place should at the very least try to arrange group rides so no one goes at alone. Hope he gets well soon.

Great idea because:

1. Hub members probably owns the majority of bikes that should be trace-able.

2. Thehubsa is well known, popular and stable 24/7 platform.

3. Listing my bike with make/model/serial number makes it much easier to sell next year to you ...because it is known/registered/verifiable and guaranteed to actually exist.....bye bye scammers!

4. Maybe I can log it with a photo of serial number and bike...sometimes hard to get one after robbery

5. If I can register my bike/s with my profile it will make it very easy to expose that info once I want to sell/transfer/claim back/brag/complain/compare/advertise

6. Those of us with the 29er/ S-Works/BMW combinations should be allowed to provide permanent links to this detail so that others (like me) can enjoy it too :D

Sanity at last. You and a few others understood. The bashers are those that do not care.

Really sorry to hear about the bike jacking. Ive been held up twice at gun point myself and I can understand the anger and sense of violation that comes with it. I think we need to stop looking to others to sort out these problems. I think your idea for starting some kind of log with rider details and serial numbers is a step in the right direction, not sure how easy it will be to get it started but I would certainly offer to help in any way.

As mentioned before, a registry already exists... http://www.nbrza.co.za/

Although it seems a good idea the only problem I can see is that the hubsa represents only a small percentage of actual riders out there - something like this would only work if everyone who rode had access to the internet and the hubsa, and also had the inclination to register and take photo's and all that. But, why don't you try starting it and lets see what happens.

Had the exact same experience on Sunday the 10th of April on my way to Northern farms about 2km from the gate.

Three guys jumped me trying to take my bike and drag me into the bushes, I obviously fought back until he cocked the gun and said that I either need to work with them or die.

The anger is the worst and now it seems a plan of setting a trap could work as it's not an isolated incident. They will not attempt this without a gun to hide behind!!

So if anyone see a suspicous black and white Volcan in the area, you know where to find me.
