Ok so I recently came off my mtb and fractured my radial head...nothing serious as not displaced so didn't need an op or any hectic immobilisation or anything blah blah blah

ANYWAY my question is this; can any self respecting mtbier wear elbow gaurds and get away with it???

I need my hands for my work; have been off for 3 weeks now and I can't afford for this to happen again so am CONSIDERING wearing some protective gear.

Any thoughts??

(Please don't tell me not to fall! obviously that is the general plan!)

would say that you need to do what you nedd to do....rather spend some time on a snarky comeback for those gear snobs than spend time not being able to do your work.

There are many cool designs out there. Dress up, protect yourself, wear baggies and go out and have fun. It's not as bad as having bar ends on riser bars I believe.....

I have fallen off horses, bikes and motor bikes and nver damaged my elbow (broken bones though!). Prehaps it was just some bad luck?

This isn't you, by any chance?

I've broken the self-same bone twice over the last three years or so. I couldn't see myself wearing anything on my elbows. I tried a couple of ride with basic athletic supports, and couldn't stand how restrictive they were.

Cool factor? Like Caad says, who cares?

Cool thanks :P

Next question though; where can I buy them? Chain reaction seems to have a good selection but sizing may be a problem!

I thought about the restricting factor but figured I could get used to it! Guess it depends on each brand/style...

I say go for it!

In the UK it is quite common place for a trail/AM rider to wear knee guards. I wear mine 90% of the time as I found that ones knees almost always take some impact during a fall.

Quite a few of the brands make some pretty light, breathable and streamlined pads for trail and AM riding.

Check out your local MX shop and CRC

I got some at a motorcycle store. Normally a lot cheaper than cycling shops for full finger gloves, pads and long sleeve riding jerseys.

I had a nasty fall about two years ago and lost a lot of skin in the process. It was made to like like a jigsaw puzzle with the skin that they harvested, so for a few months i had to make a plan.

I went to the MotoX shop and bought myself FOX elbow guards, nothing too big- nice and comfy fit, and ended up using only the one on my messed up elbow. 3 months later, mister truck driver swerved into the shoulder of the road preventing an accident with a uno- but settling to hit me. Needless to say, if i wasn't wearing the guard, it might have been more than R38k the second time round.

Two years later and all is well again, confident (and healed) enough to store the guard in the garage :)

Getting it from CRC very quick and hassle free. I like 661 Evo pads but they are a bit pricey. I have some 661 Veggy Wraps and 661 Chicken Wings. They work well but are neoprene and a bit hotter than the breatable Evo's. The soft shell ones are more comfortable than hard ones. Their sizing charts are pretty accurate. See if any 2010 models are on special. Get knee pads as well while you are at it and learn to do small jumps and drops, then you can give the lycra crowd the finger.

for general basic riding you won't kneed hardcore pads... so look at something slim like the 661 Veggie guards.

here are the Veggies

and if you want something a little more protective (but a little more pricey too)

Troy Lee Designs has a new range:

But yeah, as mentioned, check out your local MX stores first. try on a few. They will be a little more bulky (due to their intended use) but you can get the sizing figured out

Why do you want elbow pads on your head then... that is going to look funny!
