In my quest to upgrade my Mtb as cheaply as possible, I'm researching the different entry level hydraulic Disk brakes.

So my question again, which is the better disk brakes between the Tektro's and the J3's?

What is the difference between the J3's and J5's?

With a budget of around R1000-00, what brakeset can I look at. (will consider decent 2nd hand set)

I had the Tektro's on my hardtail, J3's on the soft. I would rate the J3's as being better brakes, but the Avid rotors are ludicrously overpriced. I am trialling out Clarks Skeletals, which seem to be on a par, or slightly better than the J3's, but seem to be a far cheaper & lighter system.

I don't have Avids but the Tektros. In over 6000km they have been hassle free, have flushed the mineral oil with new and no issues and the pads are easy to get hold of (they also use the Deore pads). I use one original rotor on the rear and a larger windcutter up front. I don't know what the Avids use but the Tektro's use mineral oil, of which a dinky little bottle is quite expensive.
