I just received my MJ808 yesterday and I was like a little kid when I fetched it fron my local post office. I couldn't wait to get home to open it up and have a look. Once I had it in my hand I couldn't wait for it to get dark so I could see how bright it was!

I had read reviews about this light being super bright so I wanted to see for myself. It eventually got dark enough to test it out. I went outside and swithed off all the outside lights. Plugged the light into the battery cord and pushed the switch...

Well, that light is BRIGHT!!!!! It lit up my driveway better than the lights on my car! I went to the front garden adn tried it there as well. Lets just say I am well impressed!

I haven't used it on the road or on a night MTB ride yet but judging from the beam's light spread I am sure it has just opened up a whole new level of fun in the form of night MTB rides and early morning road rides!

The light itself seems well made. I am using the black o-ring mount at the moment and it seems pretty solid. The battery looks pretty water resistant too.

I chose to go the direct import route as opposed to the local purchase route. Landed, it worked out to about R580. (I have probably spent the equivalent of double that trying to build my own lights with varying results. It is fun doing DIY lights but at this price, it isn't worth it.) If you are a DIY type of guy this could be the way to go. I bought mine from DX. There are spare batteries and LED's available from the site too at reasonable prices. If anything goes wrong I am sure you can fix it yourself. I suppose only time will tell though. At that price I am prepared to take my chances!!

Regardless of who you buy from though, I can highly reccomend this light from a bang for your buck point of view. They said it was bright and it is!!

where did you order from? dx? Deal Extreme?

DX ?

Sorry, www.dealextreme.com There is a lot of rubbish but there is some good stuff too.

You need to register on the site and you need a Payoal account to buy. I have done numerous order ranging from "expensive" bikelights to $1 gadgets. No problem so far. Depending on stock levels, orders can take from 2-4 weeks from date of order. Deliverred to your local post office. I have only had to pay duties and vat once so far...

Well, I took the new light for a ride this morning... Awesome! I rode with it on high and to be honest the med or low setting would have been fine but I wanted to SEE where I was going. I got a few "Eish!" fronm pedestrians and I was flashed by an oncoming car! That light is seriously bright! I would recommend it to anybody doing morning training. LBS "small lights are aroung the R200 mark. For a few extra rand get this one. Regardless of whether you buy local or import it yourself, it is well worth the money!!

got the same one. when you go out again, put it on flashing mode, than you see how the cars flash their lights.

The burst of light (on and off) is incredible.

Hey Popeye, you mean strobe mode? I am worried it might give somebody an epileptic fit!!

I use the same light for my morning rides, loving it.

With that black o-ring mount on the handle bars it makes it easy to rapidly switch from 'dims' (light pointed down) to 'brights' (point the light up). Most of the time I point the light downwards so that it's lighting up the road in front of me and not into the eyes of on-coming cars, but sometimes I need to see far ahead, especially on a dark stretch with no street lights.

Some good advice I got about this light:

1. Charge after every ride, i.e. not to let the battery go down completely.

2. It's not waterproof, so if there's sign of rain before you go out onto the road (or you're doing an mtb night ride with water on the trail) then make sure your battery is properly protected.

Thanks Tombeej. I am adjusting it while I ride. Dip and Bright as you pointed out  I love the reaction when people get closer and realise it is a bicycle especially those entering from side streets. They want to go but hesitate and when they realise that they could have gone because the oncoming vehicle is actually a bicycle, the expression is priceless! What is the reason for the charge after every ride? These are supposed to be Li-ion batteries. I know they don't keep a memmory. Can you shed some light (pun intended!)

As far as the waterproof goes, I am fast becoming a fairweather rider... ;)

Even lithium ion batteries lose their effectiveness over time if you keep allowing the battery to fully discharge. Here's a bit of reading:

http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/how_to_prolong_lithium_based_batteries

The important point in that link is this:

"Similar to a mechanical device that wears out faster with heavy use, so also does the depth of discharge (DoD) determine the cycle count. The smaller the depth of discharge, the longer the battery will last. If at all possible, avoid frequent full discharges and charge more often between uses. If full discharges cannot be avoided, try utilizing a larger battery. Partial discharge on Li-ion is fine; there is no memory and the battery does not need periodic full discharge cycles other than to calibrate the fuel gauge on a smart battery."

If you make a point of charging your battery fully after each use - even if you only used it for a short time - your battery will continue to give you full value for longer.

And then back to the waterproofing issue: my favourite way to do it is to have a role of cling wrap readily available. With the battery installed on the bike frame, wrap up nice and snug in a few layers of cling wrap. No moisture will get through that.
