So while it seems that everyone is always asking about moving to CT, i've decided to make the move northwards to JHB. Ill be working around the Meyerton area and was wondering if anyone has some input as to which suburbs will be ok to rent a place in for the first year or so.

I was considering living in either alberton / glenvista. Or perhaps living more south in Vanderbijlpark as i also enjoy the odd paddle on the river. Does anyone know what Emfuleni golf estate is like? And most importantly, are there any trails around????

Thanks guys.

I dont live there but I have a townhouse on the river in Vanderbijlpark. Just go down for the odd weekend or so, I like it, its still a bit "rural" if that a good word, you can zip out your driveway without a 10 minute wait because there is no traffic, theres a nice big shopping complex (cant remember the name now) so that takes care of the weekend braai stuff, and generally its nice and quiet. The Vaal river has unfortunately deteriorated somewhat over the last few years and I read somewhere there are quite high levels of pollution, I still jet ski and people still ski so I dont know how bad it is.

If you like a nice sort of rural life in a small city Vanderbijlpark is nice, but if you want the big city entertainment etc, I would stay in the Alberton area, I have a mate in Meyersdal estate in Alberton, very high quality living, the muncipality from my visits appears to be good, roads are maintained, grass is cut, lights work etc, its close to JHB, Bedfordview Eastgate all the big entertainment complexes, just off the R59 highway so its 15 minutes to Meyerton on the highway,.....for a family its probably a more convenient and better lifstyle than VDB Park and I know theres a Mountain bike park barely 3 kms away.

....Unfortunately people in the South like Alberton are very protective, so you might find the boom down when you arrive, I think theres a few guys on here who live there, they may be able to assist with Visa processess. :)

In my opinion, Alberton is the place to be for all things cycling if you live down south. There's good stuff happening in other places as well, but it can be a mission to get around at times, especially considering the traffic. I'm living in Jeppestown, which is pretty central, and it takes less than 15 minutes to get down to The Cycle Hub in Alberton, and the owners maintain some really good trails in the area. A few of us are there most weekends, so PM if you want to meet up for a group ride.

why not consider meyerton itself....the reason: its run by the DA...street lights work, roads are maintained and clean and your municipality bill is correct every month...nuff said

Another nice little town where I would easily settle is Henley-on-klip. Fantastic small town vibe with markets, kids playing in the streets and a neigbourhood watch that works. The yards are super big and if you have kids / dogs it will be awesome for them so you might need to buy one of those tractor-mower thingies.

I wouldn't look at vuilbijl's emfuleni golf estate...Couple of my golfing buddies moved their memberships to Maccauvlei because it's under new ownership(the golfcourse) and it's deteriorating at the speed of light...if the golf course is going downhill, the estate is soon to follow.

True, Henly is very nice, I think I could also live there, plus you could probably walk to work in Meyerton. :D

After reading many post lately of road rage, muggings , stolen bikes, drivers chasing cyclists in the Cape I don't blame you, it used to sound so safe and peaceful there!

I was born and bred in the Vaal, spent we spent our days swinging off man made swings from the bridges into the river. The Vall is great my folks still live there, not sure if I would move back though. There are worse places to live, hope you can speak Afrikaans.
