Hi guys... So did my 1st trip yesterday 5.65 km in 23 min and 2nd trip 4.15 km in 19 min.

Musy say that i would be able to do allot more but those uphills are killing me.

Taken that i do moderate cardio 3to5 days a week, how far and fast should i be doing as a beginner?

Take it easy initially, but you should be able to go quite a bit further than that ;) That said, remember easy FIRST. If it feels like work, back off, real cardio and endurance fitness takes quite a bit of time and dedication, but it is in reach for all of us.

If some of that sounds familiar to others, I'll shut up now. Just finished Born to Run.

Well done for taking up the sport, for which we will from now on assume is cycling ;)

I wouldnt worry too much about how you should be doing, just starting out. Frankly you should be sucking. As the other hubbers commented it depends on quite a few factors, mostly importantly being the terain (i.e. was it all hills / flat roud / tar road / dirt road ). Other factors, road bike / mtb, where you chilling to trying to go flat out ?

I suggest just continue with your rides and then eventually build up to comfortably ride say 20-30km and then enter a race. It sounds very daunting ("race") but there always seems to be someone less fit than you at these events so dont be affraid. This will then be a good opportunity to assess how you stack up against other cyclest in terms of your ranking in the race.

Later you will start to be able to judge your own improvement based on (1) improvement in your heart rate, (2) improvement in time over same distance (need at least 20km to be meaningfull in my opinion), (3) you will get to know your average speed over different terrains (i.e. improving from say 10km/h to 15-18km/h or more over general mtb terrain ... dont know road speeds)

Hope this helps

Jis, maar jy's besig bra

You can get a fair idea of what upcoming events there are on the CycleLab and Entry Time websites. However the events on there aren't the only ones though...

You can also find a good list of races in the back of the latest Bicycling mag.

I think you, me and BigVan should do the 30km Vori-Berg race on the 4th of June. That should be a very nice little intro into racing for you 2 noobs and it'll give you JUST enough time to get used to that saddle of yours.

haha! yeah, believe it or not, there are some hills there. Sure it's not CT or Hillcrest/Kloof big...

...when I commute to work (Randpark Ridge to Bryanston), there's a long hill up Hans Schoeman (from just after the highway up to Malibongwe. Then from the bottom of Hill st (aptly named) all the way to the T-junction with Kent.

There are quite a few more... but yeah... it's not such a flat ride

So I feel you evilredzombie!
