MTB Specific: What Tyre Pressures

Interestingly enough, Ive just purchased a pair of Vittoria mezcal's 2.35's ( if anyone cares to know they'll run on my 30mm wide rims)... and the specs on the side walls suggest a pressure setting of between 2 ~ 4 bar (say 29 ~ 58psi for those stuck in the imperial ages)

For normal tar hood applications I issue around 2bar F/R, and for a road event I put as much as the poor floor pump will give me. When busting the dirt I run it down to around 1.7 on the rear and 1.2 on the front based on the pump gauge

I wonder then if we are all running a too low a pressure on the tyres? (and perhaps a too high pressures on the suspentions?)

Or did I just rabbit hole it?

the Vittoria tyres are so deceptive. the old squeeze-the-tyre pressure test doesn't work with these.

I thought my pressure was fien but ended up smashing my rear rim in Tokai on Friday morning just as I exited Vasbyt at Faerie Garden entrance. It was an expensive Friday....

The tyre barely burped air but I checked the pressure and it registered 1.2 bar which is way lower than it should have been. it didn't feel too different than the usual 1.6bar Its supposed to be till the loud bang indicated something was amiss.

My philosophy is soft suspension harder tyre, especially when screaming down the trail because rims are expensive even with crash replacement policy enabled.

I also find I have more grip in all conditions except for deep sand but I can live with this.

I found myself guilty of running down to 1.1 on the rear and 0.8 on the front and happy as larry... until I snake bit the f*&$%ing rear on saturday afternoon and had endless issues in keeping it inflated (value gave endless cr@p after bombing it)

I'm going to run up a bit on the pressure again to to prevent the bites. 1.1 was just a tad too little.

But I do think the 30mm wide rims make a big difference in allowing you to run softer pressures on wider tyres - if you want to...
