As a follow on the which MTB wheel is the best, I asked the question regarding upgrading the rim or the hub.

In an ideal world one would want to upgrade the wheel set, but you already (hopefully) have a wheel set. Which makes the most difference, upgrading the hub or upgrading the rim ?

Would the same principles apply for both road and mtn bike ?

No no no no no. That is not an answerable question. We need more info.

For instance, if the hub is seized solid but the rim is still good. Guess what?

If the hub is perfect and the rim is dented and taco'd. Guess what?

If the hub is rubbish and the rim is a new Stan's Crest. Guess what?

If the rim is a steel chromed rim stolen from Philemon's bike and the hub is a Hope PRO II Evo. Guess what?

The way I understand the question, is all things being equal, what would be a better upgrade, a new, better rim, or a new, better hub?

As in, you have a complete XTR wheelset, in perfect working order, and could upgrade either the rim or the hub, which one would be the one to upgrade?

Spoking being equal. Main factors to consider on hub are rolling resistance of bearings and axle stiffness. Main thing to consider on rim is aero and weight (for straight line as well as angular acceleration). On a MTB I would more say you would want to change the rim first as to a lighter one as it is all ab out stop and go stop and go. You would get more of a benefit from reducing the weight there than on the hub.

Slowbee, light is not always better as there are 3 things to look at when setting up for a specific race:

Mass of component

Stiffness

Aerodynamics

For instance if you are riding a flat, fast marathon, then weight is not so important, more aero dynamics in that case.

If you are riding a very, hilly, technical course at lower speeds with lots of stop and goes then mass is more important, together with stiffness of your setup.

Each situation needs to become as efficient as possible. And so yes, it has all to do with the type of riding. This is exactly why high end components generally become so expensive, because they take these 3 factors and put them into one product.

When I choose my setup for a race I normally go through the course and develop a few scenarios of how I think the race will pan out as well as the type of riding I expect. I then look at my strengths and compare them to the racing I expect and then I decide on which wheels, which cranks, tyres, etc I am going to ride.

For instance, I do not always choose to ride deep section wheels in races that are very hilly and technical or in criteriums as riding a nice stiff set of slightly heavier wheels is a better choice as they are stiff so in the out the saddle attacks and sprints I get more out of the bike.

As a thread has started about upgrading bike stuff ..... got me back to this ....... is it better to upgrade the rim or the hub ?

if it's a Shimano wheelset, I personally would upgrade the hub first. Reason being, that shimano hubs use cup 'n cone bearings so I would upgrade to something with sealed.

I'm not sure if that's the best choice, but that's what I would do

So what you are asking is. You've got a stock wheel with say a Mavic 317 rim and a Deore hub. What will be the best bit to upgrade? I would say toss it all and build a new wheel. It's gonna cost you 3 times as much to first replace the rim and then later replace the hub.

Hubs. I hear Chris Kings are nice if you are concerned about quality and Hope II's are great value for money.

haha! yeah... I myself have only ever heard about Chris Kings, as I've never had the cash to buy one, haha!

But I can vouch for the Hopes!
