Eldron Posted May 11, 2011 Share Please be so kind as to give us a name that suits YOU and describes it better than "cockpit". BTW 26er bikes also have them so stop swinging around your sarcasm and not-so-whitty whip and start contributing FFS 29er envy is a terrible terrible thing
Thumper Posted May 11, 2011 Share Ask nagala to build you up a CHUMBA!Think mine cost a bit more than 15K but then again it is a sub 9.5Kg machine. ps. check ou the hub on the Momsen. great rims but very entry level hubs.
katz201 Posted May 11, 2011 Share My first ride on a 29'er was on the Giant. My second was on a Momsen. Loved the rides on both. I'm a Scott fan myself, so my 29'er will probably be the Scale 29er. But like I've said, that's just because I'm a Scott fan. My advice would be to go ride these bikes and see which one feels the best for you. Components are very important, but you can upgrade at any point in time.

When you say a bit more do you mean R100K? A sub 9.5kg 29er is flippin rare!

Not that much somewhere about 17K.I am "cheating" on the tyres though and its a single speed. For another 10K I recon I cold get it below 9Kg

In general I reckon a good racing weight for a geared HT 29er is <11kg.
Eugene Posted May 11, 2011 Share Check out this month's Bicycling mag. They did a review on a whole bunch of 29ers in your price range. The Momsen was rated very highly. It makes for some interesting reading.

andretraut Posted May 11, 2011 Share When you say a bit more do you mean R100K? A sub 9.5kg 29er is flippin rare! This is a 9.5kg 29er... with pedals, bottle cage and Garmin (as ridden) but new S-Works tyres will dip the weight to 9.3kg.
CAAD4 Posted May 11, 2011 Share If you don't want to spend that much, maybe check out the GT Karakoram, around 8.5k, not sure of the components.
markgc Posted May 11, 2011 Share im in the same boat as you, although ive been riding for a few years on a 26..my choice so far is Giant XTC with immediae upgrade on the rear hub...and then new wheels in a little while. the article in bicyling mag is good reference but check all thei websites for actual goupset specs etc.. also, the giant seems to be the only 1 with a Fox fork in that price bracket. and by the way, there is no stock, so i have to wait now. I'm guessing it cost more than the OP's R15K budget though Mine is at 10.8kg but I have carbon allergies when it comes to mountain bikes! And XTR allergies developed when I lost my sponsor! Alas it's alu and XT for me from now on...

markgc Posted May 11, 2011 Share Get the Trek/Gary Fisher Cobia HT, tubeless, pedals, cages, barends- paid less than R 12k. hi, do you have more deatil on this bike? where did you buy from?
RossW Posted May 16, 2011 Share That'll save you around 1,600g right there! In general I reckon a good racing weight for a geared HT 29er is <11kg. I'm building a Chumba HX2 (29er) at the moment and with AC wheels, Reba RLT 1 1/8th and full X7 2X10 groupset and truvativ stylo team bits i'm looking at 11.7kg. I assure you, I have spent close to R19,000.00 at near to cost prices!
