Hooray for riser bars...

Right - so I come from a roadie background and have always used ye olde flat bar & bar end combo...until recently.

I've always struggled a bit with technical stuff - struggled, of course, is a relative term and while I generally overtake people on the technical stuff my team mates leaves me in the dust when the going gets evil. Not cool!!!

So I've been trying to find a way to improve my precision - the ability to put my front wheel eactly where I want it - to the frikkin millimetre!

I finally banged on a pair of riser bars and WOW! The difference is quite impressive. I feel like I can put the wheel EXACTLY where I want it and like there is another 5% grip. Who would have thought it?

The decision is wasted time from more wind resistance versus time saved getting through the technical stuff faster - my own little verdict fell on the side of timed saved due to getting through the technical stuff faster - the bars will stay on!

My apologies to all the people I called poofters, posers, fun riders, hackers, DH wannabes, numpties, nubbins and weekend warriors because of their riser bars

I do miss my bar ends though...

If they are XC riser you can get away with bar ends ... just dont let Big Ben catch you.

Good one Eldron - dont worry about the bar ends! its better without them. When you are climbing just put your hands onto the edge of the bar (as if there were bar ends there anyway) and its just as comfy!

Hope you put on a set of nice wide bars too - that makes all the difference! 680mm is the narrowest bar width in my book. 710mm is PURRRRFECT!

Just ordered some 777mm Spanks for my trail bike! gonna be SICK!

They are the Ritchey WCS 20mm (in porn white of course) risers but bar ends just look silly and angle out weirdly because of the laid back angle of the risers.

If I popped bar ends on bike snob would come to my house and bone my dog apparently.

Alas you will be disappointed - they are 660mm - for for a XC bike.

hahaha well its a step in the right direction  hahahahaha

My chick still runs her cane creek bar ends on a 710mm riser bar and she's happy with it - screw what people think! if its comfy put them on - but i agree with you about the sweep, I also find bar ends are wierd on risers. And if you have them on you cant get your hands out wide enough to the end of the bars on the tech stuff!

Also got myself a Raceface carbon riser bar for the Zula earlier this year. Now that I'm used to it, I really like it. Do miss the bar ends too.

I was really glad not to have the bar ends on with our last trip to Harkerville. Had a few scares with the small trees and would've been man down with bar ends on the handlebars.

Yup, risers are the bomb. I've got 680mm on my bike which seems perfect for singletrack through trees. My buddy has a 710mm and it's sometimes just that little bit too wide when you're klapping it through the trees. He's hugged a tree more than once...

Perhaps these are the answer for XCers that want the width and sweep without adding the height...problem is they only seem to be available in carbon. Problem is that anything carbon on my mtb makes my sphincter pucker up.

Apparently you're the odd one out if you do not use low-risers on a XC bike. I can not see the point. Raise the stem 20mm and it's the same.

I have used those flared grips on riser bars. They make a huge difference in terms of comfort, and don't bring the style police down on me. Sadly I now have a carbon riser that won't allow them.

I have found the new BBB lock-on foam grips with a curved profile that fits nicely into your palm. They are super comfy!!
