I've been riding a bike on our roads since having to ride to school in primary school. On this day, I happened to have my camera on to try it out in low light conditions, and caught this on film. You decide what happened, besides that I almost got knocked off my bike. Nothing like making sure you keep your wits about you!

close there GuyP, but not sure if the guy was doing anything deliberately, and even unwittingly wrong according to the rules of the road.

It's a single lane with no demarcated cycling line that would tell a driver to stay away from protected road space. That red line is not a cycling lane. Also, it's keep left, pass right.

I dunno GuyP. i'm just glad nothing happened to either of you.

How do they say? You can not do the same thing over and over and expect a diffrent result...... Translated - roadies will forever be knocked over on roads by vehicles. You guys are crazy for riding on the road, there is actualy people that WANT to ride over you. No excuse for bad drivers but damm road cycling dangerous.......

you kinda put yourself right in a danger zone - the drivers blind spot.. rather get behind him and get his attention in the rear view mirror so he knows you there.. we loose when a car hit us.. \\

And dont get me wrong - I called a fat dude in a white BMW a P**S today after he nearly took me out by cutting into that small gap at the noordhoek side .. where the first poles are - it seemed the only way to get rid of him after he stopped, then came up alongside me twice to hurl abuse - but thanks to my IPOD I only heard something about tattoos and f**king cyclists so I just shared a nice, friendly Cape Town greeting.. after I laughed at his fatness and told him he was gonna have a heart attack -

also I asked another dude siting there if he had radio comms I assumed he worked for the chappies company as he was sitting at the little wooden hut. He said no. So what happens if an accident/fire/landslide occurs? How will the relevant people be informed? I think I will email them tomoro.

THe car is going over traffic calming devices (speed bumps), so yes it is cool to try and pass, but for what effect? It is just like the car that races past a bunch of cyclists only to brake at the next stop street. A lot of ego signifying nothing.

It is very dangerous to attempt to pass traffic when the vehicle is navagating trafic circles, speed bumps and other "sleeping policemen". Also these devices are put into place because that piece of road has been deemed dangerous, so there is a need for caution and a reduction of speed.

So yes the car was selfish, bt only because it as cautious for its own safety. You placed youreslf into a dangerous situation, further amplified by the presence of what looks like a school, which may signify that the driver could turn for parking at any time, flattening you in the process.

Next time slow down get well behind the vehicle, and wait for turn to navigate that dangerous piece of road, or you may find yourself becoming a road marking.

My take is dumb cyclist for sure! The obvious thing to have done would have been to hang back as I normally do - no idea why last Sunday was different!

With some of the high profile cyclist deaths that have happened recently due unfortunately to their own error, I have become a lot more critical of my own mistakes. The aim is to consistently learn and behave better in the interests of staying alive!
