Which brakes do you think are the best?

The reason for choosing Shimano is that it works with Mineral Oil where the other brakes uses Normal DOT whatever brake fluid . Now Mr Bornman will most probable agree on this but on the mineral systems your maintenance are much lower . It's a lot easier on seals and the other moving parts . I am always very amused when I read the reviews on Brakes . You can only stop so fast , anything faster and you will fly over the bars , if your brakes gets to hot then learn how to ride properly , if you want ligter got for a extra sh@t etc .

 

Going over the bars will only happen if you have traction. Otherwise you will just skid.

 

And IF you ever snag a hose, the fluid will not ruin your paintwork.

As for the mineral oil... I'm not sure how true it is, but I've heard it gets hotter quicker during frequent heavy breaking (as would be the case with Mr Simon22's DH riding)...

 

and when the fluid gets hot, it causes fading in the breaking. I know of someone who upgraded their hoses to Goodrich bradeds to reduce the heat in the system. He said a combination of this and larger rotors helped with the "hot-fluid-fading"

FORMULA R1 over and over again !!!!

 

Based on personal experience I have to agree although I dont own a set

 

I am very happy with my XT's and also SLX were good

 

However when in the UK was out riding and had a chance to ride a few bikes back to back 2 spez's with avids and a Lap Zesty with Formula R1s

 

The stopping power as well as how little finger pressure you needed to stop was just brilliant with the R1s

 

The R1 s are very very impressive

It is not true - not the oil story, not the braided hose story.

 

It is true that boiling fluid, whether of the DOT kind or oil kind, will cause brake fade. Mineral oil has a lower boiling point by about 20 degrees C (IIRC), than DOT fluid and will thus boil and fade quicker than the same system filled with DOT fluid. However, the story that one will heat up quicker than the other is not true.

 

The speed that something heats up has to do with the substance's specific heat gravity. That is an indication of how much energy a given quantity of the substance will require to raise its temperature by one degree.

Although the specific heat capacity of DOT fluid and mineral oil will almost certainly be different, that difference will not matter in the case of a bicycle's brake calliper where very small quantities of fluid is present. A typical brake system has about 20ml of fluid in, thus a small amount of energy will raise the fluid's temperature very quickly, no matter what fluid is in there.

 

Most of the heat from braking goes into heating up all the other parts in the system - the pads, the pistons, the cappipers, the hub, the spokes etc etc and the little bit of difference of energy required to heat up one or the other, is neither here nor there.

 

Braided hose is just about perfectly insulated from any heat transferring substane on the brakes and will have a zero effect on either the cooling capacity or specific heat capacity of the entire system.

 

Brake fade is not only caused by boiling fluid either.

 

In bicycles, mineral oil is a better than DOT fluid for reasons already mentioned and the small boiling point disadvantage is not an issue.

 

Perhaps a final law of physics and universal truth: Avid sucks.

I only use XTR, stops really well when you pull them, (but aren't all brakes supposed to do that?)

I love my XTR's. They are super responsive and always work- never suffered from any fade other than brain-fade.
