Back to the original question- Were the punctures snake bite or thorn type punctures? If they were snake bites there are two choices, pump your tyres up to 4 bar (and loose traction and control) or change to tubeless. If they were thron type punctures, put slime in your tubes and put tyre liners in. When I ride down rocky downhills I take my time and try to pick a good line. I can't tell you how many people go down fast but are repairing punctures at the bottom of the hill. MTB'ing is about conserving the bike as well as the engine.

yes, mrmed - i agree! i have had good luck in my roadying - i look onto the road and try to avoid the bad bits (glass, holes, passed-out mtb'ers. in my younger days *creak* i also seemed to avoid punctures off road on my boneshaker by choosing the least risky regarding glass, roots, sharp rocks and passed out mtb'ers... all those sharp bits on a bike play hell with your tyres....

USE JOES AND YOU WONT HAVE ANY PROBLEMS, I USE IT AND HAVE NEVER BEEN LET DOWN ON A RIDE SINCE CHANGING TO JOES TUBELESS CONVERSIONS.

Do not confuse rolling resistance with traction.

4x4 owners normally deflate tyres when off-road.  Why?  To improve traction.  When deflating a vehicle tyre it doesn't actually becomes wider.  It becomes longer.  Thus better traction and you get the feeling of floating over sand dunes.  Does it reduce or increase rolling resistance?  I am of the uneducated opinion that rolling resistance is increased.  The vehicle has more traction and can move forward more easily.

If the above is true, the following should also be true:

Increase tyre pressure on-road in order to reduce rolling resistance as traction is not such a critical factor.  The road surface is uniform hard and stable.

Decrease tyre pressure when venture off-road in order to enlarge footprint and to improve traction.

Added to this is the fat that a deflated tyre punctures less than a fully inflated tyre.  The deflated tyre will mold itself around and over the obstacle while the hard inflated tyre will be exposed to penetration by any sharp object.

Just my opinion.

Steven looks like we wasting our time !!! Some people just will not listen . Anyway with your Stans/Joe's conversion you can fly downhills without having to worry about glass , rocks or whatever else you may encounter en-route .

I am sure lots of people have mentioned it but stans is the way to go. I ride with a stans kit on mavic 717 rims and larsen tt tyres or crosmark. I know its a bit heavier than your other tyres out there. I run it on 2.1 on the front and 2.2 on the back and have not had one puncture in the last 3 years. Also have ridden the epic now twice like this with out taking a tube or bomb with me....

Can believe that. Some people drive without seatbelts, cycle without helmets, have sex without condoms. Same mentality.

Shocked Shocked

So you never took a tube or bomb with you on a 900k ride on 2 occasions !!!

I have also taken the spare tube out of my tubby bag.  I use a tubeless repair kit for normal rides.  No need to take an extra tube along.  Tubeless repair kit (snot stringe) plugs a hole effectively.

But going on a multi day tour without a spare tube, quite a risk.

If I was his partner I would have been very pissed off if he had got a puncture but had decided to rely purely on Stans! Not very clever in my opinion.

That sounds very low for tyre pressure, are you not worried about the tyre rolling off the rim on a sharp corner?
