I am not canoeing due to time constraints, to clear that up.

Student cards are not easy to fake.

I'm studying architecture, known for its work load being huge.

I cant remeber who said it, but studying isnt 30 000 for 4 years, its around 30 000 a year, cant expect parents to pay that and all your other expenses.

Some people who arent in the situation wont understand. But i am glad to see some people are agreeing with me. I get the feeling that students arent being taken seriously because people feel we ae still wet behind the ears.

THERE IS NO TIME FOR A JOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, as said before.

There has never been time for a job! But always time for pissing it up and big Jolling. This is just the student culture.

No sympathy here. I had to do it just to drink & party, but the same applies to doing anything else.

I was in the position (5 years) where the gains/losses was calculated after a race. I have seen someone trying to calculate the profit, but I can assure you without sponsors a fairly big event runs at a loss.

Just add the MC, TV coverage, entertain sponsors, timing, hire off toilets, traffic department to mention a few to the list that are paid out off the race entry fee.

Feel really sorry for you Fruity, you are a poor student wanting to have some fun.I am in the same boat just I am 42 have 2 children and can only afford a Schwinn. At my age I should be able to have a fancy bike and be flying on it.**** life just ain't fair but that is life, suck it up and make a plan!!

I am thankful for the bike I can afford and for the rides and races that I can attend,so stop crying and be thankful for the things you DO have!!

The youth of today needs to learn to deal with life and stop moaning cause life does not get easier the challenges keep coming till the day you die.

How is one supposed to enjoy riding when entrance fee's are so high, fair enough if you are working, but as a student there is no way i can afford your ridiculous prices.

In the canoeing world there is a special fee for students, less than half.

So, if i live in the East of Joburg and want to do a race, i have to drive atleast an hour each way to where ever the race might be, the whole race could end up costing me around R300 all in all, if not, MORE. Do you think student have that kind of money to throw away, i can go to groenkloof and ride to my hearts content and it will only cost me like R100 including travels, and the routes there are probably better than your race routes..

Someone please sort something out, i beleive you may be chasing riders away that might actually have true potential.

Stupid, arrogant post; no wonder it drew so much flak. And best not to debate with a fool as, after a while, anyone watching may not be able to tell the dfference......8 pages later.

Students are among the most privileged people I know. I never had that privilege myself because if I didn't earn, I didn't eat, never mind enter bike races. It costs money (and enormous effort) to put on a race. Someone has to pay for it - and you sound like a 'wekka' making the demunds.

A student can only get a job if they are studying something silly like a BA or something.

All students have student cards, one would just need to present that, and yes i have seen how the races are organised "from the other side" and i know that the rate can be cheaper.

I have no time for a student job, even in the holidays we get projects.

The times are changing.

Entering the Dusi, a 3 day canoe race from PMB to DBn, is only like R300 for students, if that, it is far more worthwhile and the price is justified. You get food, beer, powerade, t shirts, thousands of free samples, amazing girls to welcome you at the end and a prepared route like none other.

CSA has to wake up in life, and the race organisers.

With a post like this, you sound like a real ********. Luckily for people like me, who didn't even study something silly like a BA (which is what I would have done given my 'talents'), I still make you architect and engineer types look like student earners ten years into our respective careers. When you get to that point and STILL don't have enough to ride the epic, should we still be subsidising you? I jolly well think not, friend.

haha, tumbleweed, be honest, it was easy..

Carpet,

'

I know these things, i just dont feel the race fee's are justified.

You need to study economics and also get a better grasp on what it costs to put on a race. Race fees can be as much as they want, so long as the market bears the price. Which it does.

No time for a job? Rubbish. I had a g/f who was an archie in Durbs, she had to work hard, but she had time for plenty besides. You should see how little time you have once, like many people here, you have to work in the real world, bring up kids, run your household, etc etc etc. You're still in the easy part, son. The hard part starts once you finish studying. We routinely work 10-12-14 hour days and still have to do all the other stuff.

I uess this is the place where adults can act like kids and its ok. haha.

Yea i shouldnt have opened myself up cos people really did jump at the oppurtnity.

To some it up from my part, and i hope every1 reads this,

The course is intense, and in my free time during breaks or when assignments are done, i do private work and produce/master music. It makes money but not enough.

I dont see myself as lazy, as right now i am busy on a house as we speak (making oney in the holidays).

No sympathy required, nor any life lessons thank you very much.

Just need to justify why we ALL pay so much and get nothing, NVM only students.

If you studied a 'silly' BA, perhaps you would know how to express yourself more clearly and without offending as many people. For example, I can't see you flying through English 3 if you 'some it up' as you have. I have never, ever seen anyone make a malapropism with a monosyllabic word - and no, that is not a compliment. Try to 'sum it up' next time, OK?

Please, son, tell us how it is mature to start of with a tantrummy I HATE YOU!!!!! with a juvenile dose of exclamation marks and then to move on to a decidedly unsophisticated insult just several posts later? Because I'm confused; you're the one who looks like a spoilt, delinquent brat from where I'm sitting.

*** MAN!!!!!!!!!

I studied Medicine for frikken 6 years! We( med students) have to work 3 nights a week in your final 3 years! And it is not like you woessies that sit and ponder about the "flow" of this and that! You flippen stand on your feet in a sh@t covered goverment hospital and stich/repair 200 shot/axe/stab wounds every evening, deliver flippen 60 gu covered babies and try to get your ward patients organized before the proff comes at 6am! You work until 7 am without sitting once. Then class starts at 8am. If you are not at class, you do not get to write the exams, klaar!

And wait, there is more........I worked 2 evenings every week at the lab, got married on that salary, cycled and went on holidays.........

Yes, I only slept 2 evenings a week, but hell, at least I know how to work!

You are just a lazy ASS

This man deserves a Bells. 'gu covered babies' I think I just peed my pants with laughter.

If you do the maths...

They say on the walkerville mtb race website that they have in excess of 1700 riders.

Lets say for 1700 riders they charge R130.00 ea

This totals R221 000.00

One of the farms they go through is owned by someone I know and they don't get paid for the access. At the most they get offered 2 free entries (when I tried to get my hands on one of these last year nothing materialised.)

I can understand the need to pay the guys working for the day and also make a profit.

If they pay 40 people R500 per day that is R20 000.00 and you pay the trail builders R20 000.00 (thumb suck)...

Maybe they pay the venue R25000.00 for the day?

Why are more of us not organising races?????

The profit seems huge - unless I'm missing something...???

You need to market the race to get those 1700 riders, they don't just magically show up. Then you have to pay the online entry providers, ambulance services, etc etc - it is blady HARD to make a profit on a race and it takes YEARS before you hit critical mass...

You need to make peace with life.

Things dont always go the way you want it.

Your not always going to be a student so relax.

You will not be able to afford everything in live even after getting a job. Such is life.

Yip , well said.

And then what hits me is the irony of the thread, "I am unhappy, so now I am going to run to the HUB for a solution "

Being a student in the late 80's and early 90's, not even my mommy wanted to hear my problem, let alone people on the net (the web was a mere fantasy back then)

My advice china, watch some Chopper Reid video's ;)
