I recently changed vehicle insurance to King Price, saving R600 per month on the vehicle. They also added my Giant Anthem X (insured at 30k) for R1 and then my kids bikes and my wife's bike and two cellphones for an extra R150 odd per month. Seems like a great price, but not sure what they are like come claim time. Anyone have any experience?

Have my insurance with Santam, and my bike got stolen 2 weeks ago. My broker submitted the claim the following Tuesday, claim was approved on Friday, and all sorted.

On that same Friday I advised them I would prefer to get the cash rather than go to a specific shop for a replacement bike, that was approved on the Monday, and the payment was made on the Tuesday.

Very happy with Santam!

I got asked questions around "competition use" - obviously this then costs more...

So what's the difference? I think some guys abuse their bikes more when not competing

Quote was R150pm for a R25000 bike and R75 for a R15000 bike... bit expensive if I listen to the quotes here... (not to mention what I would have to pay for what my bike is REALLY worth)

Recently added a fatbike to the quiver. Phoned the insurance company and gave a description of the bike to get it covered. Got the revised policy this week and this is apparently my new bike: "Pedal cycle mountain bike custom carbon thatch carbon wheen shimamon"

Heh?!?!?!

How do you guys insure custom builds?

I picked up my bike for just over 10k. I've done a bit of work on it, and I've been calculating the replacement cost of all the parts on the bike. If I were to purchase everything new, it'd likely be in the region of 30-40k. So what do I insure my bike at? 10k, 40k or somewhere in between? Logic tells me I should insure it in the region of 20-30k.

Also, do you insure your gear separately under all risks? Gloves, helmet, jersey, bib, etc., will likely all get ruined in a decent crash.

I would think replacement value. I don't think the price YOU paid makes a difference. Take it to a bike shop for an evaluation.

Yea, I think that's what I'll be needing to do tomorrow. Busy crunching through this thread and the general consensus is to get itemised quotes.

Main issue is that a number of the parts are extremely difficult to replace these days (full campy chorus 10sp carbon groupset).

You need to insure for replacement value. Regarding your gear...depends on where you are insured. With Santam you can claim under All Risks. With CycleSure for example you need to "specify" your gear. Value of your shoes etc.

okay guys, so need to move my bike insurance from Outsurance as they are charging me a small fortune for my bikes on 'out and about' and as itemised.

Just had a trawl thought he thread and gave Santam a shout but they said I had to have my household with them. Anyone got any recommendations?

Will try cycles sure. Replace meant value should be about R35K+ on roadie and about R30K on dirt.

My road bike's premium is R67/month and my son's Mountain bike is R7, (yes R7) with outsurance - had a claim for theft out of my yard and was settled within 1 day, bike was replace by CL fourways.

I'm also at Outsurance , very happy with Them even if comes by claiming for accidental damage , My MTB fell against My work stand and the top tube cracked , They replaced the frame within 2 days after I submitted the claim , I heard You get cheaper bike insurance , but I don't know when it comes to claiming , Both My bikes are insured at Outsurance together with Cars and all household items , Been with Them for over 10 Years and I'm very happy with their service .
