That is like ... > R20,000.00? (Google: 1 Euro = 10.3118611 South African Rands)

For the Garmins @ $1,499.99 = ~R10,800 (Google: 1 U.S. dollar = 7.19900942 South African Rands)

You're kidding us!

I doubt if the Garmin will be less than 15K in SA. If you look at the Edge 500, the US retail price is $250, and it costs about R2500 here.

dude - do you even know what a powertap or qarq power meter costs?

Yes. i have an idea what they cost. Compare the older Polar power meter with the price of the new one: that is a huge jump. Does it realy cost that much more to manufacture the new one? Or is it being priced at what the consumer is "used" to pay?

if they are that price is is not better to build a training hub using a powertap hub ? I don't believe that you can really use a power meter during a road race (mtb - Yes) unless you are not planning on staying with the peleton !

If you're not using your power meter to record your data while you're racing, you're missing out on some of its major analysis benefits. You don't need to look at the power readings while you're riding (some would say that doing so is even counter-productive), but having that data afterwards can be really useful.

Interestingly these pedals are already for sale (pre-order) in Australia for $1299 (AUD), after their recent local bike show unveiling. That's roughly R9200. Given the fact that bettered Powertaps will be brought to market before Xmas at reduced prices, I can only see that Garmin will drop the final launch price. They are probably only testing the market's reaction prior to releasing it, and I gather from what I have read elsewhere that there is much disappointment at their proposed RRP and initial choice of pedal.

Another cause for concern would be the reliability of the pedal spindle bearing and cleat contact area wear and tear, nevermind crashing. Garmin has obviously thought about the maintenance aspect but has not given any indication on those running costs.
