That is very sexy!

I had looked a few other options, but me thinks I need to look at these a bit more closely.

I'm busy considering the same thing. I have been looking at the cube AMS130, its pretty light for a full susser (11.5kg), its got a good anount of travel but it changeable between 110, 130 and 150 and comes with front and rear lockout so that you can work the climbs. Its got pretty good reviews. I'm thinking it might be fun to have something that behaves well on XC, marathon stuff but will a the flick of a button enjoy some more downward facing fun.

I reckon it may diversify my riding places and enjoyment, i'm also coming from and XC style race hardtail.

This one's the SL but the AMS130 race is 12.1kg and quite a bit cheaper...the only difference is the wheelset, but you can swap to your light XC.

For versatility you cant beat the Giant Anthem 29er  . It does have a low bb though.

What else did you look at?

Cube seem to be the best spec for the price...even at 20k scott, specialised and whyte have SLX/XT components and poorer wheelsets. I prefer the alu frame too.

Hmm

Busy deciding on whether to get a new bike for XC or one with the extra travel.

I came from a hardtail so anything with a rear shock is luxury.

If you like the response and feel of a hardtail but want a harder hitting bike, why not aim at long travel do it all HT? Like an On One Inbred, Ragley Blue Pig or a Orange P7? Cheap to buy, easy to maintain, steel frame is sublime and I tell you now it will thrash the hell out of a full sus XC bike (or 29er for that matter...). Actually I have seen an On One hard tail hand out a snot clap to trail bikes under the right rider.

Otherwise aim at 120mm or more in a full sus and enjoy the confidence that it provides. Why limit one self to 80-100mm of travel for an everyday bike? Why not shed 5kg's of beer weight and get a long travel bike that flies.....

(still trying to loose those damn 5kg's of keg weight....eish)

After riding for 3 days in a row, with a MASSIVE smile, I would have to say get a Morewood Shova. Discontinued, but look for a used one.

My Zula has been retired for the mean time.

  • 3 weeks later...

XC is when the roady converts feel safe and comfortable and dont have to dismount at the first hint of rocks or logs across the trail or fire road.

Trail is when roady converts discmount.

AM/freeride is when they soil their lycra.

find this topic very interesting,I have recently bought a second hand morewood as a AM bike.I ride a lot and was riding my light XC bike more aggressively, jumps etc,and was leaning more into this style, more fun riding ,less orientation on time to km covered.I would not consider AM bike(more than 6inches of travel by my judgement) as a do it all bike.It is to heavy for 40km XC with friends,as I find the focus is pure speed and a test of current peak fitness.

Many of my friends response was why would I want to evolve into ihis form of riding?

My reasons were more that I ride many times on my own so why race?Plus factor the same trail gets way more exciting.

A heavy bike is hard work uphill,(good for training fittness)speed on the downhill(good for skill training).Strong, for the rough stuff.Less breakages, hopefully.

I will still do xc races,on an anthem,my speed may increase(or maybe decrease)but I am enjoying my riding more.
