Creaking SLX crankset

Hi Hubbers

Anyone have an issue with a creaking shimano slx crankset, its damn annoying.

I've receently bought a brand new crankset, and after about 200km of riding the damn crank is creaking.

Reason i bought a new crankset is because my old crankset did exactly the same.

Reason i know its the crankset, is because the same happens on a friends bike, but he has changed he's entire drivetrain, and even bought a new slx crankset as well....

Please help!!!

Check chainring bolts.

Remove pedal. Apply light grease on thread. Re-install.

Check pinch bolts on non drive side.

My wife has an SLX crankset on her machine and it it silent!

Very unlikely that it is the actual crankset that creaks. Check the BB out, I had similar problems on my FSA Carbon and XT crankset......... changed all my BB's to Chris King and NEVER had sqeeking, creaking or tick-tick-tick BB again. Good luck

So both your bikes are creaking, and you both bought new crank sets, and they both still creaking.... Sounds like its not the crank set at all. There are many things that can creak on a bike, and sometimes the sound sounds like its coming from somewhere else. Here are a few:

Saddle

Seat post

pedals

bottom bracket

head set

suspension pivots (if duel)

chainring bolts

Check out all of those before you blame the crank.

I have a SLX crank and have no creaks or noises..

Does it only creak when you sit on the bike and pedal it (under load)?. I would remove the chain and rotate the crank arms. Should spin silky smooth. If it does then it could be another part of the drive train.. My moneys on your saddle rails creaking under saddle flex while you pedal....

thanks for the response's

@Mach7-7 Its anything under torque, i forgot to mention in the first post, it only happens in middle chain ring.

@Robrider I've only got one bike, the new crankset is creaking like the old one i had before.

Had a similar problem with an FSA crank. Two different bike shops rekoned my bb was stuffed and was charged R400 for a new BB. The problem still persisted after the installation of the new bb. After much searching, I eventually traced the creak to the head set. A bit of grease and a little tightening here and there sorted the problem.

The sound apparently resonates down the tubes and gives the impression that it is coming from the bb/crankset area.

Do u have an aluminium or carbon frame?

I have also experienced creaking cranksets, but found out that the carbon frame around the BB was the culprit.

Packed more grease and re-torqued the BB, creaking disappeared.

That's my point. If you have changed it and it still persists, chances are the problem is somewhere else.

Before installing the new crankset did you have the BB shell faced ? so the external bearings are alignedwith one another, which if they are not could cause creaking as well as premature wear on the BB bearings.

At the risk of being 'flamed' I have never had a BB shell 'faced' and I have never had a problem that I am aware of that was caused by this ...... so the question is how important is this really

When I asked Ruaan at FP to fit a new XTR crankset on my old Cannondale HT they whipped out this tool and trued the faces on the BB.That was in 2000 and voetsak so its been around awhile
