katz201 Posted October 13, 2011 Share And there I was thinking my bike rebuild was almost completed. BUT somewhere in the process I damaged the BB thread on the frame of the bike. Is there a way to fix this?
javadude Posted October 13, 2011 Share Take it to your LBS and see if they can "Chase" the threads. If they are not too badly damaged it should work out. I'm not sure if all bike shops are equipped for this, but I know that Marks Bicycle Workshop in Bellville will be able to help you out. Mojoman Posted October 13, 2011 Share I wanted to ask about this a while back when considering buying a second hand frame. If the threads in the BB are damaged can it be "re-threaded' or is the frame then toast?

If the threads in the BB are damaged can it be "re-threaded' or is the frame then toast? Threads can be fixed if they are not totally stripped. You need the right tools for the job though: http://www.parktool.com/blog/repair-help/bottom-bracket-tapping-and-facing-bts-bfs If your threads are totally stripped you can import press in BB's from overseas, although you will be limited to old style square taper cranks. davetapson Posted October 13, 2011 Share You can try and carefully feed the BB back in to it's original threads. Just be careful in tightening it up that you don't over do it.

Tried that, but realised I was only going to make the situation worse. Seems like the first 2-3mm is stuffed up, so can hopefully save the situation. Will go visit a LBS
Wannabe Posted October 13, 2011 Share WE-Bikes in Van Riebeeckshof Centre, Oude Westhof, Bellville also have the tools and know how to do this. Not too crazy with their price too.
