ok finally got the 10spd one off. required semi destructive work on the screw that attaches it to the hanger as it was stripped.

The replacement one (fitted in picture) is not marked as 9 or 10, so I dunno what it actually is but they look very similar build. both say exact actuation (and XO which means nada). cassette is SRAM 12-40 10 spd. shifter is 2x10spd SRAM mtb

The full throw is not right. it shifts for only 9 of the 10 gears. If i set it correctly at the high end*(small cog) then it goes 1x1 all the way to the final throw but then stays in the 9th cog.

if i set it to the lowest gear(large cog) then it will shift down but ends in the 2nd cog, (this doesn't shift as crisply as the first * setting). I have triple checked the H and L limit screws are ope wide enough to not restrict throw.

 

my conclusion - I think i have a 9spd derailleur and it doesn't work on 10spd cassette/shifter (as @NotSoBigBensaid) . Going to move the broken one back on and swap the screw and cage over. BUT open to pearls of wisdom from the experts.

Some info from my experience - for those who need to have older systems work or just save by running 9X.

I started off with an SRAM 9spd shifter and a Shimano 10spd der using a 9mm shim.

Now still with the X9 shifter but using a Shimano 11spd clutch der.  The advantage of this is no sim required as the SRAM 9spd and Shimano 11spd have the same ratio, AND the 11 spd der can take the larger cassettes that are now available.

I run a 32 NW front and 11 36 at the back - which I have found adequate so far for all the Cape and Natal (Howick, Karkloof, PMB) rides I have done.
