Find a training program (I think Fit Track has some) and follow that.

You will make progress by just riding around, but not nearly as much as if you follow a structured program.

Do what most people do. Watch the following programs: The Big Bang theory, Entourage, Top Gear etc. etc. And then 1 month prior to the race, just start training frantically. You'll be fine.

On a serious note, you will have to do a combination of long rides (base training or TITS), intervals for VO2 Max improvement and sprints (flat and uphill) for strength and endurance.

start with building base - long rides to start with. Build strength and lose weight (if you have any to lose). As your training progresses, start including higher intensity stuff.

Before you know it, you will be quite strong.

Also, find a group of guys to ride with. Makes the distance easier and you have someone to measure your progress against.

Well i can easily do 20 km at the moment... But that is offroad and at a pace of about 14 kmph.

What exactly is intervals?

Intervals are the things that make you puke but make you stronger.

Fantastic stuff. Do lots of them and ignore the rest. Suppose you should also do at least 3 long races in between.

A spinning class will be a good start. You do 2/3/4 minutes of high intensity and then cool down, then repeat that, either sitting or standing. You repeat that for about 45 - 60 minutes.

You should try and get your average speed on the 20km up to around 20-25km per hour.

Depends on your genetic composition and what your goals are.

If you just want to finish start training 3 weeks before

If you want to race intervals and strength training during the week and in the gym, combined with long rides on the weekends will be my advice.
