Straight steerer tube into a taper headset

I am getting a new 29er frame with a taper headset and have a fork with a straight steerer tube. I know that you can fit an adaptor to get the fork to fit into the 1.5in headset. What are the downsides (if any) in using such a setup? I know that with a taper tube comes additional stifness, but is it worth the R5,000 to upgrade?

Imho, no. It's not worth buying another fork. Just get a stepped headset. Cane creek and Chris King both make.

+1 on Thug's suggestion. Theres a veritable minefield of headsets that can do that.

try to sell your old shock and buy a similar tapered one on da hub

Any technical reason for that comment? They are not that easy to find on the hub, but I have considered it.

Had the same issue with my new fork! Got a stepped head set, and 1000km odd later, no issues!

If you in a hurry (as I was) get an adapter (I had a frame with a 'normal' steerer and tapered fork though)

No reason. Might possibly be a slight increase in stiffness, but the stepped headset will make sure you have no problems.

Thanks for the feedback; stepped headset it will be. I suppose I will reconsider if a good deal comes along - as always!

Patience was the key, got a great deal, so I could sell the old one for a good price, thus quick sale. I never try to make money out off such deals, but rather pass the deal on to a fellow hubber
