I made an adjustment to my saddle hight on my moantain bike during our Sunday ride. Moved the saddle app 1cm upwards. After about 30 km's i developed a pain (not cramp) in my my butt and upper leg muscles at the back of my leg. This is not the kind of pain caused by a saddle but real muscle pain - so bad I had to struggle back to our car and can barely walk. Can the reason be the saddle adjustment

Could be, classic symptom of to high a saddle setting is pain in the hamstring / Glut area.

Not sure why you raised the saddle but if you feel it required adjustment it's usualy best to be cautious and make changes in smaller increments of about 2 - 3 mm i.e. lower it again by 3/4 cm (7.5mm)

Where did you ride, a new route? Lots of uphill? New bike, why did you move it in the first place? More info please.

We did the Breedts Nek ride. I moved it as it just felt too low. I am sure I just moved it too much and that also caused the saddle to move slightly backwards due to the slope. On checking the setup last night it was about 1 cm too high but about 4 cm too far backwards so my angle to the peddlas was way out. Thanks for the response I will try it again this weekend.

1cm is a lot to raise a saddle by, just shows the effect of adjusting your setup, I went to Mike at SBR Sports and he set up all 3 my bikes and have no complaints, he also deteremined that my one leg was shorter by 3mm-which I thought was negligible till he put in a small support on my cleat and the diference in feel was substantial and that alleviated my hotfoot.

Back to you Broker, it could be pinched nerve as the misalignment in the leg might have caused pressure and additional weight on the leg.

1cm rise at a time is a LOT!!!

Why did you rise the height anyway?

I prefer 2-3mm increments at a time.

Important as well; Is your fore aft setting of the saddle so that your knee rises above the ball of your foot and the pedal axle (when your pedal stroke is at the 3'Oclock position looking from the drive side)???
